Hi,

It's been a long, long time since I last posted in here! But I'm still playing GR constantly (several nights a week), and I've checked back for new mods from time to time.

Long story short: the G400 in my SlotTB 900 desktop pc died last week :-(. I mean stone dead. The pc won't even POST if it's in it (thankfully it boots normally with an old 8mb agp card I had on hand). I have a an Asus A9550 on order, but it's not expected 'til sometime next week.

I do have this new (-ish) work lappie, a 2.6G Centrino w/512mb and 7500 mobilty 32mb video.

Is ghost playable on this card? The ATI site says the card only supports dx7. Is that a problem?

Thanks for any info, especially from anyone who managed to play GR with this card -- what sort of performance can I expect.

The G400 was playable at 800x600 everything lowest, frame rates ~20 - 30 fps. I was a little shocked to discover a Powercolor radeon 7000 32 mb ddr on another desktop (Duron 600, 512 MB) is not as good as the G400 (I'm looking into getting it repaired by matrox, assuming it's just a corrupt bios).

I play (and mod) constantly on a worse laptop than yours so I believe you will be very satisfied about the performances.

That's great news! A couple of years ago two of my workmates tried it on identical toshiba lappies (I don't know what gfx), one played fine, the other did weird things like display some models (including characters) in untextured white wireframe. I'll give it a go tonight and report back here.

GR is absolutely playable on your laptop. Although the Radeon 7500 is a DX7 card, it is still "DirectX 8 compliant" which means it will run under DX8 (or DX9 for that matter). My wife's system is a P4/Radeon 7500 setup and GR runs fine on it.

BTW, the minimum graphics specs for GR are a 16MB DirectX 8.0 compatible 3D card

BTW, Matrox's Millennium G400 was THE top graphics card of its time. Better than any of Nvidia, ATI, or 3dfx's offerings in 1999. Since then, it has been downhill for Matrox in the 3D department although Matrox still excels in the niche 2D office environment.

Well I can report it is absolutely playable on the laptop at 1024x768x32bpp, with environment and character detail on medium (all else low), getting framerates consistently north of 30 fps.

I agree with what you say about matrox. In their day they were the best. But they failed to see where the market was going. I think their driver support is still probably superior. Anyway, their rma dept. offered to repair the g400 for 70 bucks, when they are selling a refurbished G400 max on their online store for 82 bucks! I replied thanks, but I've ordered an ATI 9550se for ten bucks more. If the 7500 mobility is anything to go by, it will kick ass (er, in it's price point, Can$95). And it is a dx9 part.
