migryder 13
Well, more of the same? yes and no. More diffiicult than the orginal, but no Pavlov's House either. The action is intense once again - the Battle of The Bulge and Kursk stuff is all out war with armor, aircraft, and flamethrowing infanrty to boot. Linear? Of course it is, they keep a tight leash on you at the Bulge, stray and get an arty round. More freedom of movement in Ponyri(?) and Kharkov. A few new weps, but I hate the new machine guns because they must be deployed and if you're not in fox hole or have something to rest one on you go prone, this can be very bad in this game, movement helps a lot. Not to say that toggle prone is not very useful here. The flame thrower is fun to try, but leave it where it lies, I did a 360 burn once and was lableled a Traitor to Mother Russia, but hey! I was surrounded! The maps are nice. The sound of mg42s will fill the air from several flanks at once, no more rushing across an urban area after taking out one nest as in Stalingrad, several times I found myself surrounded by mg nests in Kharkov doing that. You fight from a T34 again, less the snow and this tank battle is more difficult, but more fun. The Panzers look great upon closer inspection. The Brit campaign is much better, but I can do w/o the PT Boat ride in the end. There are several rides in this game but they make more sense than the orginal and are more do-able too, with the above exception. Twice I've played that PT ride through and both times I had no more boat health at the end, that is after tons of trying to get through it at all. My fav part? The B-17 w/o a doubt, I just always wanted to go up in a flying fortress so don't take that as a gospel account about what the game has to offer for the infanrty. That is one pretty ride though, look up and see the con trails of your fellows while you scan the sky in the dorsal gun turret! It soon gets ugly for some though. I could not tell a Spitfire from a (not even going to try) German fighter, that gets solved when the escort turns for home. Then the sky fills with bogies. This begins the Brit campaign and the rest of those missions segue from it. Well, those here who know my GR missions know what I like, let me tell ya, I started at Regular figuring this one would be tougher, I backed down to Greenhorn after about one minute! I should have gone on at Regular, I played through the game again on Regular and it was easy enough, but I knew what to expect too. I will do Hardened next, Veteran is going to be very nasty once again. This is not GR or any tatical shooter, this is WWII and some of the insane battles that took place, you are fresh meat expected to follow orders and that is about it. Having stated that, this one requires more squad based stuff, no more Rambo in the sewers. You'll be back with Cpt Foley, Sgt Moody, Ender(?) and Mjr Ingram, but you are Riley from a different squad in the 101st and I'll let the SAS officer tell you 'bout yourself as a Brit. All in all, I had a great time playing and will play again and again, but I love CoD. Now I can skip the stuff I hate and play the missions I like from both packs. Sent a copy of Shellshock Nam 67 for disk replacement(DVD to CD) today, will get to that one soon. Edited October 14, 2004 by migryder
