Josey Wales 0
History: I've been playing GR for a couple of years now. My previous PC ran without a hitch, however I decided to go out and upgrade my system (details in DXDIAG below). Details: I install GR (no patches, DS, IT or mods) and GR runs like a charm. Once I install DS and IT the app starts, finds the CD, screen goes black for a sec, then crashes. I've tried it in both 32-bit and 16-bit video settings. Since GR worked fine by itself, I'm doubting it's the video card and/or system and suspect something in DS and/or IT. According to the Gold Edition readme file, the software is patch current to version 1.4, so no patches are required. Help?!? Below is the DXDIAG output, followed by the ike and ikecrash log files. For the record, I ran all the tests in the DXDIAG tool earier and they all passed. Josey Wales 0
Another note... I tried the Complete Uninstall this morning without success. It still works with ONLY GhostRecon, but as soon as I install DS and IT, it stops working.
blistr 0
Hi and welcome to GR.net. Try deleting the file modsset.txt from your GR directory and restart GR. This will load GR without DS and IT active. If GR loads, it may be a problem with the expansion packs themselves. Try enabling DS and see if it works. Do the same for IT. This will at least narrow down which expansion pack is the cause of the crash. [EDIT]: I noticed in the DXDIAG log you have an MSI graphics card. Did your copy of GR come bundled with your video card? If so you may want to look at this thread. Edited October 11, 2004 by blistr
Josey Wales 0
Thanks for the suggestions! I haven't forgotten about this, however I had some issues with the new power supply (yes, smoke was involved). I'll try the modsset.txt file, however with the "Gold Edition" CDs, I'm unaware how to install DS and/or IT without installing the other. There's no option on the install window. Thoughts?
blistr 0
Install them both and then delete the modsset.txt file. Now when you load up GR, only GR will be active. Click Options and then the mods tab. Activate DS. If GR loads with DS active and you are able to play a mission, try activating DS and IT together. If GR crashes with DS active, delete the file modsset.txt and restart, only this time try activating IT instead of DS. I've been playing GR for a couple of years now. My previous PC ran without a hitch, however I decided to go out and upgrade my system (details in DXDIAG below). ← What part of your system did you upgrade? If GR, DS and IT worked before the upgrade and not now, chances are it is a device/driver issue. Ensure all your drivers are up to date (graphics and sound cards, mainboard, etc.). Josey Wales 0
After I installed GR, DS and UT, I removed the modsset.txt, which only had the initial comment line "// MODS SETTINGS - LIST OF MODS ACTIVE ON THIS SYSTEM". I had the same result of initial launch, then back to the desktop. What part of your system did you upgrade? The only things in common are the keyboard, mouse, memory and hard drives (which were reformatted). I checked with MSI's auto updater and all drivers are updated... still no luck. I miss my GR!! -Josey
Dannik 43
Looks like you have an onboard sound chip. To the best of my knowledge, GR doesn't like onboard audio (IE no sound card, just a chip on the motherboard). This doesn't mean it's the source of the problem, but it might be. Were you using onboard sound before?

Only when I install DS and IT that it fails to work.
Josey Wales 0
Bingo! ...and doh! I can only tell you that I let Microsoft pick the video drivers (via the Windows Update tool), rather than NVidia, via their tool, and viola! I am now back in action. Where's the smiley with the embarassed look? Thanks to all for their input/suggestions. Who would have thought Microsoft would have been right? *gasp* -Josey
CR6 0
From your dxdiag info, it looks like you've got yourself a pretty sweet system. Now you've just got to upgrade your video card Nvidia has quite a long time between WHQL-certified drivers. Most of their latest drivers mainly support their newer chips, so sometimes people have had better luck using older drivers. Also just want to say I've run GR successfully on several machines with onboard sound (AC'97 spec)
Specter 0
Just a note here. THe MSI boards are great, and the onboard sound that comes with them is top notch. Do NOT depend on MS for your drivers, or MSI for that matter. Up to date drivers can always be found right at Nvidia's site. Don't worry about the whole MSWHQL signed driver BS. THat just means that it is a reliable driver, yes, but it is also an old driver, as MS takes their lazy assed time getting drivers through their lab. That is all that signed thingy means, is that Microsoft has tested them and they work.
