Crimson 0
My current speaker setup (just two and no sub) is at least five years old. They have recently been blown, so now when ever a deep bass sound is played it sounds terrible. I've pretty much settled on this Logitec 4.1 setup. I dont want six or seven satellites lying around... I just need four. Does anyone have these speakers? What is everyone else using, and how much do you like 'em?
Dannik 43
I use their cousin, the Altec Lansing 4100 set. Nowhere near as loud, but more aesthetically pleasing and excellent sound reproduction, especially if you like bass heavy music. I can't say if it's a better speaker set, but it's been very good to me. If you get the chance to demo some sets, at least give `em a chance. I've always preferred Altecs, so I'm biased, but for music, assuming you don't need 400 watts RMS, the Altecs have a very rich sound profile. In terms of numbers, those Logitech beasts are a sweet sounding deal. The sub is pretty fat, not appropriate for some desks, but as you know, a sub doesn't have to be conveniently located to do it's job, as long as the satellite speakers can reach, cable-wise. CR6 0
Crimson, what sound card do you have? If it supports 5.1, I would suggest getting the 5.1 speaker setup. Why? Most games and DVDs are set up for 5.1 sound these days. Also, it doesn't cost much more, and doesn't take up much more space (need to put a center speaker above your monitor is all) Personally, I am still running my original Audigy 1 which only supports 5.1. I have the corresponding 5.1 Creative speakers that were available a few years back which aren't great, but I can't crank up the sound much anyway with the rest of the family at home. Sundowner 0
I bought the logitech 4.1 for my mothers comp, very nice little setup the sub gives off a nice rumble wish i would have bought them for myself, but i did get them for a much lower price than whats shown in the add you posted i so i would shop around, my personal setup is a quad creative 4.1 with a sub, does the job
dekela 0
i just bought the 5.1 version from logitech and fell in love again. music, dvd's and games are all awesome. no reason why the 4.1 would be any different cheers......
KRP 56 92
I've got a set of Klipsch Promedia 4.1's which really sound great. A big step up from the $40 Altec Lansing 2.1's they replaced.
Crimson 0
Crimson, what sound card do you have? If it supports 5.1, I would suggest getting the 5.1 speaker setup. Why? Most games and DVDs are set up for 5.1 sound these days. I have the Audigy Gamer. I could of sworn it allowed for up to 6.1, but I wouldn't bet on it. Also, then only main stream game I know of that takes full advantage of 5.1 sound is Doom3. I could care less, but it's what I've heard. Anyways, changed my mind, and I'll be spending less so I can also buy a much needed/wanted DVD burner. Speaker wise, I'll need to settle on something a tad cheaper, and here's what I've come up with: Logitech Logitech Z-640 - Seem to be quite popular. Logitech X-620 - Can I only use five of the six speakers if I can only do 5.1? Logitech X-530 - FDD2 seems to be highly regarded... I'm somewhat looking into Creative and Altec, but I'm not too interested. I'd love to buy a nice Klipsch or Harman Kardon system, or the Logitech Z-680's which seem to be praised... but they're expensive. Edit - SB Audigy Gamer. Only does 5.1. Bummer. WhiteKnight77 1
Crimson, GR uses 5.1. NASCAR 2003 does too. Get 5.1 at least.
dekela 0
Logitech Z-640 - Seem to be quite popular. these are the one's i'm using now, and am absolutely happy with. i agree with WK, if you can use 5.1 then get them. many games use 5.1, and it makes for a much more imersive experience. these also have a matrix button so you can get 5.1 sound from a 4.1 source, which is handy if you need a plug for a mic cheers...... CR6 0
Edit - SB Audigy Gamer. Only does 5.1. Bummer. I have the exact same card - the Audigy Gamer. I use it with a 5.1 speaker setup and it sounds great, especially with GR. In the above post, I called it the Audigy "1" because the Audigy Gamer, Audigy MP3+ and OEM versions were the exact same card but with different software bundles. If I remember correctly, Live! series ~1998-1999 SB Live! came out with 4.1 sound ~2000-2001 SB Live! 5.1 came out with 5.1 sound support Audigy series (i.e. 24-bit sound) 2002 Audigy "1" (Gamer, MP3+ etc.) 5.1 support 2003 Audigy 2 - 6.1 support 2004 Audigy 2 ZS - 7.1 support
Crimson 0
I think I've settled on the Z-640s. My last question is this: If I only have a sound card that can do 5.1, will a 6.1 system be a waste of money?

My last question is this: If I only have a sound card that can do 5.1, will a 6.1 system be a waste of money? Not necessarily, when you upgrade sound cards (whenever that may be), you will be ready for the speakers. Check the manufacturers website for a manual on how they are connected to your sound card to see if everything is feasible.
Crimson 0
According to my UPS tracking number, the Z-640s should be here tomorrow. Can't wait to toss these cheapo speakers out.
Chef-Scott 0
I like these... not much into multi speaker systems on my computers. Two speakers is plenty for me (when I use speakers, which is very seldom). Ordering a pair today! http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/product/view....dx=110&code=
Crimson 0
They're here. First off, let me say the manual is no help, but everything is color coded. I plugged in everything and started blasting my music... gotta say it should be illegal to only have two speakers. Anyhow, naturally the Audigy sound cards dont have color plugins... it's all gold color. They're three plugin things from the center speaker, with green, black and orange plugs. I'm not getting any sound out of my rear speakers. Does anyone know where the black and orange plugs go? Edit - Never mind, I figured it out. For $50 I think I got a pretty good deal... I already have a headache. Edited October 1, 2004 by Crimson
Dick Splash 23
Does anyone have these speakers? What is everyone else using, and how much do you like 'em? No Crims', but from what I've seen and heard, Klipsch Pro Media 5.1's are the shizz. They have them at the local Best Buy and they're a well made set. The sub weighs a ton. Pricey though at $350 + your friendly US State Tax DS
Crimson 0
I almost bought a Klipsch 2.1 set... looked very nice, but reviews said that there was a hissing noise when no sound was coming out of the speakers... not cool for $120. I'm impressed by this $50 purchase. It's unbelievable how much of an improvement these speakers made.
