Rocky 1,224
Oprah Audience Gets Free Cars $7,000,000.00 Moment Sept. 14 - Oprah Winfrey opened her new television season by giving all 276 people in her studio audience free, new cars. I can't figure out how to post a direct link to the footage, but the video is at www.feedroom.com in the entertainment section. 276 free cars... I'm lost for words, help me out... MarauderMike 0
I want to say I hate Oprah but.... 276 Free Cars?!? Eeeeesh.
Ryan243 0
They're not completely free. And Oprah didn't pay. Pontiac paid the sales tax, but not the federal income tax (and possibly not state taxes, I've read and heard conficting reports). But still, it's a good deal. Even if it is nothing more than a promotion by a car maker.
swartsz 7
this was also on the news here in Holland, they said the audience still had to pay taxes in some cases up to 6000 dollars, still not bad for a new car.
Rocky 1,224
Ha, that would be a bit of a downer! YOU GOT A FREE CAR she was shouting at the audience, I didn't hear her say "BUT YOU GOTTA PAY $6000 IN TAX!!", maybe she mumbled that bit.
Crimson 0
I would greatfully take that car for $6,000 and happily sell it for over $10,000.
Mamon 0
wow, i wish i could afford even one, crappy, car.
deadly_sniper22 0
My friends dad was told that it was promotional and that the audience members were selected from different buissness and stuff so it wasn't just 'oh your lucky to be in the audience today' it was more of 'your lucky you work or od what ever you do so you get a free car' i don't know hwo to explain it but...yeah DS22
Crimson 0
I doubt that. Oprah is one of the most genuine people out there... just look at the people she helped out up on the stage. (My mom was watching it as I did my homework.)

magnumkp 0
It's like when watching Bid Up TV, you only pay the closing arrow price. Oh, and the £8.99 delivery.
Sup 0
I doubt that. Oprah is one of the most genuine people out there... just look at the people she helped out up on the stage. (My mom was watching it as I did my homework.) I'm not so sure about that, but I understand that she did give them to people with a little less money. However, like it was said before, she didn't pay for the cars. She really gave the car company a lot of free publicity, at the cost of a lot of cars.
|S&P|Papa6 0
@Sup, I see her this way. She doesn't give anything away without a catch. She's like a daytime prophet who thinks her money solves everyones problems. nice as it may seem yes, But I feel over the years that she changed. The first 3 or 4 years to me she was genuine. But allegedly "giving!?!" cars away but sticking those who you said had lesser monies with a $6,000 bill in the end isn't free. they have to pay taxes and licensing. Uncle Sam Will get his share. So from thinking this through in MHO, she gave them another problem or debt liability of X thousands of dollars. So how's she a great person? If she really wanted to help people, have her cover all expenses.. then you'll see just how genuine she really is...(logically speaking) Am I the only one who feels this way? wareagle1990 0
My understanding is that the people had 3 choices. 1. Not accept the car. 2. Accept the car and pay $6000-7000 tax. 3. Sell the car and pay the tax with the profits. A husband and wife from here in Alabama both went to the show and both won cars. I say its not a bad deal. A $28,000 car for $6000-$7000 dollars. If I would have won it I would have tried to sell it. If the person couldn't afford it they could always not accept the car. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6074848/ The choices are down are in the last paragraph. Also it isn't Oprah that levies the tax it's our government. Nothing is free in this world. Of course I guess she could have paid the tax with her own money. I'm sure she wouldn't have missed $1.4 million - $1.7 million. Edited September 24, 2004 by hort3

Guess you haven't read about her past. Oh, and she never claimed that she bought the cars either. I can't believe people can create crap about a good deed.
