UK : vet injured in Cow Rescue

Recommended Posts

When I heard about this I was like, what an idiot. An air/sea rescue of a cow stranded on a cliff turned to disaster when the vet fell off the cliff. They had the whole thing on TV.

The rescue crew of about 4 was around the cow and had it wrapped in the rescue net for the air lift, but when the chopper started the lift, the vet (older guy) forgot to let go of the net and was hoisted a couple of metres above the rocks, then he let go and toppled down the rocks into the sea, like a rag doll.

Some brave rescue guy jumped intp the sea and somehow managed to drag the vet back to the rocks, but his face was a mess, for a news cast that was pretty graphic, blood all over the shop. Poor guy, but should NEVER have happened.

All that for a cow, that's ultimately heading for an abattoir anyway, geez.

Oh yeh I forgot to conclude my post!

When I heard the story I figured the guy was an idiot, after I saw the mess of his face it was a shame, he didn't deserve that for basically doing his job.

Someone, probably the rescue service should have stood firm and said uh-uh, no way, not for a cow, shoot it and let the fish have it.

A cow got stuck near where i live a few years back. I watched them rescue it and then asked why they'd put so much effort into getting a cow out of a ditch.

"Because a cow is about £700 to a farmer"

Can't argue with that. :)

But i do agree Rocky, gets stupid when a human risks their life for the cow. In the incident i saw, only the cow was in trouble. ;)

You can actually - a rescue helicopter costs over £1000 each trip, plus all the labour etc, there's no way the rescue can be justified on financial terms I'm afraid.

It was a bad day out all round, well apart from the coo!

Well the one i saw didn't involve a heli - but if it did then i would say it was a waste of time. :)

Me and six other collegues went to a farm loaded with caves to do a research about the Desmodus Rotundus (vampire bat), we spent the whole night on it, capturing and collecting blood from the bats. Once the morning came, we headed back to base camp and on the way back we found a calf stuck on a deep whole, not much larger them the calf.

One of my buddies jumped on the whole and passed a rope around it, so we could pull out both of them.

even we took 3 hours to rescue it, the operation was a success. The "funny" thing is that 2 weeks later, when we came back to check on the caves again, the farmer told us the same calf was taken by a jaguar.

I guess it was supposed to become someones food anyway whatever if its a jaguar or an armadillo. :D
