Whisper_44 0
MIAMI — Deadly Hurricane Jeanne could head back toward the United States and threaten the storm-battered Southeast coast, including Florida, as early as this weekend, forecasters said Wednesday. It was too soon to tell where or if Jeanne would hit, but forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (search) in Miami warned residents from Florida to Maryland to watch the storm with 90 mph top sustained winds. "The new forecast track increases the threat to the southeastern coast of the" United States, hurricane specialist Jack Beven said. Some computer models had Jeanne curving out to sea and missing land, but others had it hitting the United States on Saturday or Sunday, forecasters said. Jeanne was blamed for more than 700 deaths in Haiti, where it hit over the weekend as a tropical storm and caused flooding. It had been moving out to sea, but it appeared to be looping back toward land, forecasters said. At 11 a.m. EDT, Jeanne was centered about 530 miles east of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. It was moving south near 5 mph, but was expected to head west by early Thursday. source Hurricane Jeanne, Hurricane Karl, Tropical Storm Lisa regional imagery, 2004.09.22 at 1745Z. WhiteKnight77 1
Just imagine if it is completely true. I read an article in todays Atlanta Journal-Constitution about melting of glaciers in Antarctica. There are some moving at 8 times their previos speeds that were held back by the Larsen Ice Shelf that had broke of an iceberg the size of Delaware. The article went on to state that if all the ice shelfs broke off and the glaciers all retreated into the oceans and melted, would raise the oceans levels 200 feet. Think what that much water would do to the weather cycles. We could have even more deadly storms that what we have now.

Parabellum 12
i got a blow up boat on my carport ... i feel safer. yea... truthfully hurricanes suck but if people built things better there wouldnt be to much of a problem. and trimmed their trees for christ sake! Very true. It would also help if people weren't so insistent on living in low-lying areas. If you live on or near the beach, you should expect to get pummelled. That said, best wished to my fellow Floridians. Prayers for all of you.
WhiteKnight77 1
I know for a fact that up in Virginia, people will sue VA Power to keep from having trees trimmed back from the power lines, yet the minute an ice storm or hurricane knocks branches or the entire tree down taking the power lines with them, they scream bloody murder for VA Power to get the lines back up that very instant. One time back around 87 I believe, we had a snow thunderstorm (it was in January IIRC) that blew up many transformers and brought a bunch of lines down. We lost power at my parents house. I had to wrap my fish tank with blankets and a sleeping bag to keep the heat in. The worst part, the power lines to our house are underground, but the lines feeding the subdivsion are half mile away, above ground.

Parabellum 12
Lakeland got hammered downed trees are all over the place. In our apartment complex, huge oaks look like giant dominos, pushed over by the finger of God. One huge tree was felled across a road, on top of quite a few vehicles. Powerlines are down on campus (where I work) and there are also traffic lights hanging precariously at many intersections. I haven't seen a great deal of structural damage, but I wasn't able to get out too much. County-wide curfew is in effect. Out past 7pm = trip to jail.

Ruin 17
First time I've been able to check in since Frances... wow. Things are nuts up here. Ivan brought a Hurricanne to my grandparents house (where we were staying) 2 Thursdays ago. It took a nice big oak tree and threw it at their deck... tore the thing to pieces, it's bad. Most of the damage has been cleaned, and insurance will take care of the repairs. The tornado it's self could have been worse. Almost lost my car, a tree came about 10 feet away from landing on it, lol, that woulda sucked. Power was out for days, trees hung on lines and blocked roads for a while. People are attempting to clean up, but it's nasty. I promise, if I ever get the time/chance I'll get some pics up for you guys; the devastation is simply mind boggling. Flooding was still bad here, but the newest form of damage came in road washouts. Part of I-40 was closed for a while, and a road near my grandparent's spit-out a 500 foot section of road... that's quite a sight. Oh, here's a pic... downs't quite show all the damage, but you get the idea... Image Some local flood damage pics from the local paper. Pics from the day before the above. It's bad, and clean-up/rebuild will take a long while.
GRT 0
Man you guys took it bad there, only thing that happen here(Jacksonville) was the power went out for 3 days and some debris from mobile homes. Good luck there and glad you OK Edited September 28, 2004 by RR_GRT
Ruin 17
Jax never gets hit, we were alwyas lucky. I lived for... 9 years IIRC in Jax. Neat city, but it was a while back. We always caught the outer bits of rain, and that's all.
