longshankslives
Well I am video card shopping and this place I know sells them and lets you try them out. Well I have a 2.4 gig pentium with a 100mg of ddr ram I bought the 6800 gt and it is using my entire cpu and it locks up. When it did work I ran doom and I saw graphics that I have never seen before on a card. It would not run operation flashpoint and who knows what else. I tried a 9800 pro and thought it was not good enough. compared to my 5600 ultra it rocks. I will stick with cards my system can handle until I have a 3.4 gig cpu and 3 sticks of ddr ram. I also want a card that can play old games not just the ones with great graphics
Crimson
I have that exact card. I think the problem is you probably have old ATi driver files floating around your HD. Grab DriverCleaner and tell it to clear out the ATi graphics drivers. Also, what nVidia drivers have you been using? Did you snag the "latest" ones from the nVidia website... 61.77 IIRC. (I'm using 66.00 and loving them.) Also, this is a common problem with ALL GTs... make sure your 2d AND 3d clock speeds are the same. Stock, they are 300Mhz 2d and 350Mhz 3d. Did you check what kind of temps you were getting. The shutdown temp is 120C, but I would get worried if you were over 85C. My advice if you dont get the GT working, is to get a vanilla 6800. Great performance, and RivaTuner is having some success opening up the extra 4 pipes. Your current CPU cannot keep up with the GT. 100MB of RAM? Do you mean 128 or 1024? Parabellum
What kind of system requirements does the 6800 have? I have an XP1800+ processor and 512 Mb of PC100 RAM. Would it work on my system?

Any card will "work" on your computer, it's just a matter of your CPU holding it back. With that kind of processor and memory, you should get (if you plan on upgrading) a 9800 Pro, or, if you refuse to touch ATi, then a 5900XT. (Which isnt as good as the 9800.) While a 6800 Ultra claims it needs a 450W PSU, people have been running them on 350W PSUs. As long as you have a name brand PSU with stable rails and decent amps, 400W is plenty. ghostie
If you're going to get a 6800nu you might want to check into the ASUS model V9999/GE I heard that overclocks very well. Looks nice too. Not sure on the price though as asus tends to be 40-50 bucks more than their competition.
Crimson
The ASUS V9999 is a GREAT card... but it's priced at GT levels. If you can find for >$50 cheaper than a GT, jump on it.
longshankslives
well. I have decided as soon as I have the money that I am going to buy the AMD 3400 64 bit processor, msi k8t-neo motherboard, and 512 of corsair high performance ddr ram. Then I will have the foundation for a monster gaming system. I have decided I will then get the ATI X800 pro with 12 pipelines and that should keep me playing games for the next two years at least. this whole purchase here would cost around a $1000 dollars but it would be worth it if I did not get evicted or have my car repossesed
Crimson
Save some cash and get the A64 3200+. Also, with the A64 series, RAM timings have been proven to be next to worthless unless you're building a S939 system. (Which you arent.) Do yourself a favor and get a gig of PC3200. I think Corsair has some for under $200. Also, dont get a motherboard that uses VIA when they're plenty of cheaper nForce3 boards out there that perform much better. Crimson
Yes, the 3400 is better than the 3200, but not by much, and it's quite a bit more expensive. S939 = Socket 939. You are going with Socket 754. The motherboard you have picked out uses a VIA chipset, which arent nearly as good as nVidia's nForce3 chipsets. I would get this board with a 3200+ with CG steppings so I could OC it like a champ. Edited August 29, 2004 by Crimson

They go up to 3800 now. I am just trying to get a system that will not be a joke in two years.

Crimson
No, I dont see the value difference between "two hundred megahrtz." You can overclock a 3200 to 3400 speeds so easy it's a joke, and you save >$70.

I don't trust ATi; I never have. Besides that, my mobo doesn't support ATi cards, so they're out of the question. I do plan on upgrading my processor, RAM, etc, but not right now. Crimson
Your mobo doesn't support ATi cards? That's a shame, since ATi kicks nVidia in the nads when it comes to $200 and under.
longshankslives
I will have to seriously reconsider the 3400 vs the 3200 though if you could overclock the 3200 to the 3400 you could bump up the 3400 to 3600 etc..? Also Crimson, the motherboard you got sounds good but all the stores where I live only sell Asus, gigabyte, Abit and MSI the MSI k8t-neo is the only one available.I it has been given great reviews but i have heard of problems as well Video card wise I have only owned nvidia but I am going to give ati a try because I hear their newer cards work better on older games like OPF. Plus the X800 is cheaper then the GT. I am not paying for it it is a birthday gift. I can't afford this stuff.
WhiteKnight77
I typically recommend tech for a PC that is 6 months old as it is cheaper and will still last a good long while (I got my current chip in Feb 2003 and wont upgrade that til 2005). The only thing I recommend top of the line would be a video card. Why upgrade that every year when you can get one that would last 2 maybe 3 years? It is worth the extra expense in the beginning to get the extra life. ASUS motherboards are some of the best boards going IMO. I have an A7N8X Del board and have not had problem one with it. Crimson
I would suggest doing your shopping online, since it's a lot cheaper than, say, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc etc. With a good PSU, motherboard and RAM, the 3200 should OC quite nicely. (Keep in mind you'll also need a better heatsink and fan.) I still suggest the GT. The only way I would agree with a X800 is if you can find it at least $40 than a GT. longshankslives
well Crimson I have it down to getting the 3200 AMD processor, MSI K8N PLATINUM (they have the nvidaforce3 chipset and not the VIA) and I am getting a gig of the Cosair XMS ddr ram. I have everything else except a video card ( well my 5600 ultra ) I am lucky that someone likes me because this is WAY out of my price range. I work hard and hey I have never had anything that was close to top of the line ever. I am just glad I am at a good time in gaming history because I think this system would last me a couple of years. I have heard by all the test that ATI blows away NVIDIA when it comes to speed, antialiasing, and image. I have heard that for Doom 3 GT 6800 wins over ATI because of the ultrashadow thing. I have also heard that ATI X800 plays older games,Rouge Spear,OPF,GR,GTA, etc way better than 6800 gt. I personally want something that will play everything not just the lastest games that 3400 is a lot more expensive then the 3400 and not much better I am not a fan of overclocking because I have seen people do it and have to buy a new processor so I want something that will work. I feel weird because a week ago this was a dream to have such arig and now thanks to someone who thinks a lot of me I am about to have a real modern high end rig. longshankslives
that 3400 is a lot more expensive then the 3400 and not much better let me rephrase that, I agree that the 3400 is not better enough than the 3200 to justify the cost. also I do want to jack with ordering online. I want someone I can scream at face to face if I get burned for getting a defective part
Crimson
If you go to ResellerRatings you will see NewEgg is ranked the highest. They have way too much of my money and I've yet to have a beef. I have heard by all the test that ATI blows away NVIDIA when it comes to speed, antialiasing, and image. If that was the case, I would've went with an X800. I went with the GT, overclocked it to Ultra levels, and saved >$100. The GT has 16 pipelines, whereas the X800 only has 12. Going down the long run, the GT has the brighter future. But, both are still great cards. Since that mobo has the nF3 chipset, go with it. ghostie
hey crimson, check this prog out. OmniExtremeEdit FX v1.5 I was able to bump my voltages of my 6800gt to 1.4v. I wasn't able to overclock at all let alone to ultra levels before but now I can. brought my 3dmark from 11500 to 12200
Crimson
I keep thinking about doing that, but I'm not to sure how it will affect my temps. (I mean, how much higher they will be.) What are your temps like now?
ghostie
My temps didn't really change. I'm at 57-58 idle and 80-81 full load. Actually in gaming it's more like 65-70. the 80-81 was when I ran rthdribl for a while. If you have good cooling in your case then it shouldn't be a problem. In any case, if you can overclock fine now then no need to mess with it. I couldn't overclock at all without artifacts. Now at 400/1100 and stable with no artifacts.
