Hey Everyone,

There seems to be some new (or maybe just new to me) program going around lately called GRBOOM. For those not familiar with it, I guess it's sole purpose is to "boom" GR servers, making them crash. It has something to do with sending bad packets to the game.

Technical details aside, I have two questions to ask.

1. Why?

Why do some people have to try and ruin the fun for everyone? I've had so much fun playing GR multiplayer for the past two years, but now it's next to impossible to find a good server that's not subjected to this. I know this isn't really a question that can be answered by any one person specifically, so I guess it's just a rant more than anything else.

2. Is there any way to prevent this?

I'd like to know if there's any way to prevent this from happening to our dedicated server. If there is a preventative measure we can take to stop these kinds of attacks, especially the GRBOOM ones, we'd be eternally grateful to hear any suggestions.

There are a lot of people in our clan spending their hard-earned dollars to rent a dedicated GR server from PrimaryTarget. Our attempts at trying to play over the past month have been bombarded by constant hacks and crashes (GRBOOM isn't the only problem...it's been hacked in other ways, too).

Thanks for hearing me out, and I hope the GR community can find a solution for this soon.

The one by the author does. I've tested it. No probs. if your still going down then it ain't from grboom. Possibly there is another one out there crashing the servers?

There is. I remember searching on google on the proggy to find out more on how it works. but i doubt its different. This other one is command prompt too, and is named, "Crasher", so looks more like someone ripped the crashing proggy.

  • 2 weeks later...

i remember it. part of it might have been because of me. At the time there was no known fix so i alerted the admins once i found it and tested it on my own server, (verifying it's payload) and asked them to hush it up before unruly peeps got ahold of it as a simple google search would take you to the source to download it. Now that it is patched (strange as it seems by the one who created it) it is much safer to talk about. Ubi isn't gonna release a patch as they say the game is unsupported. I talked to John Pain about it who contacted the developers, and that was there response. hopefully gr2 is immune to this.

There are actually 3 different programes that can make a server crash, i wont give out any info here, but it goes alot deeper than most think.

There are two persons that all server admins should watch out for, i have there names and IPs logged, these ppl regularly use the GR boom and other programs to crash servers at general will, If fact this problem is extreamly old. Not to mention the commiting suicide, teleportation and others used by the same persons.

I tested the program

And it seems that you can't crash servers when..

- The server is full

- Or when it's running Kidbuster (NOT vulnerable, never)

So, KB$ is stopping the server DoS attacks,

More info can be found on the SRS anti-cheat-forums.
