larocket83 0
As stated in the title, my computer seems to continue to run slower. My games that used to run perfect with all settings on high keep gradually getting worse framerates. I've gotten rid of spyware, viruses, defragged the hd, cleaned up the hd, etc. Does this just naturally happen? Would reformatting my computer help? Just wanting some others opinions. I don't really want to reformat, I have before and it was no fun, but if that will increase my performance by alot, I'm willing to make that sacrifice. Thanks you guys. swartsz 7
sure, a format is no fun, but it will help to speed up your pc. you could also try to run a registrycleaner like the one in Advanced System Optimizer, it helped me speeding up my pc a bit.
Cobblers 12
Like Swartsz said, the best thing to do would be to reformat. I reformatted my PC for the first time last night, very easy to do and now my PC is running super fast! Try it!
swartsz 7
just make sure you have a backup of all your important data and all the cd's within close range. but it is the best way to clean and speed up your computer.
Specter 0
Don't re-format. That is drastic, and if you are using XP or 2K, unnecessary in all likelyhood. First, follow steps below: Run these programs, they are free. AdAware can be downloaded here. Spybot: Search and Destroycan be downloaded here. After your machine is clean, Spyware Blaster can be downloaded here to protect your entire machine. Make sure to run the update feature on all three programs, and with AdAware and Spybot, make sure you read everything you do very carefully, and read My XP Tweak Guide to find out how to back your Registry up first, and make a restore point. These two operations are a MUST DO FIRST before running any of these programs ! ! DO NOT skip these two steps under any circumstances ! ! If you get stuck or need a quick and easy walkthrough, catch me on Messenger at anytime you see me on. If I don't answer right away, it probably means I'm gone, since I have a three week break starting Wednesday before I start my next round of classes, so leave a message, and I'll get right back to you. I can also be reached through ZJJ. Any questions, I'm available for you. What is most likely happening is you have a bunch of spyware on your machine, sucking down resources like a lush at the bar. Possibly a virus, but more likely spyware. You may also have some unnecessary programs running. Check out my XP tweak guide pinned in this forum. Any questions, feel free to ask. larocket83 0
Like I said, I've gotten rid of all the spyware. I used ad aware, ad aware version 2, and 2 other spyware programs. That helped a little, but not too noticable. Thanks for all the tips, I'll check into that XP tweak guide.

What I would do for now to secure the system from further spyware invasion, is run AdAware first, Spybot S&D second, then run SpywareBlaster third, run the update, then enable all protections. This uses no resources to speak of. Then review my tweak guide, and if you have any questions, get with me, and we will go through your services and startup menus. XP rarely, if ever, needs to be reformatted. It's a drastic measure to cure such usually simple issues.

I turned off or disabled a lot of things that I didn't use through services and the start up menu and that has made a difference on my PC.
larocket83 0
I just downloaded a registry cleaner, ran it, and rebooted. HOLY WOW! That really helped, I can tell an instant difference. It found over 4000 errors, mostly in the activeX/com section, probably due to spyware/adware. Now a few more tweaks and it should be almost as good as new. Thanks for talking me out of a reformat guys!
NightCrawler 137
Normally I would agree with Phantom, but if you had or have VX2 better internet you will have to reformat it's the only way to get it completely off a HD. You can get more info on spyware here. http://www.driverheaven.net/guides/spywarev3/
larocket83 0
My games were still running slowly after I went through that guide, so i went and got 512mb of ram from bestbuy. I went from 512mb to 1gb and that made a huge difference. Now I can run bf:vietnam, cnc:generals, and all my newest games on all highest settings with great framerates. Specter 0
Glad everything is well now. Enjoy the games ! ! remember: FORMATTING is always THE LAST resort with XP/2K. The reformat every 6 weeks like with 9x is gone. BTW, which reg Cleaner did you use? Edited August 21, 2004 by PhantmSniper
