LaCie FireWire 800 Drives and Windows XP SP2

BACKGROUND: Microsoft has made changes and improvements to the FireWire drivers built into Windows XP. This is for improved compatibility, stability, and data integrity. There are many improvements to the FireWire drivers; this interface is also called IEEE-1394 and iLink.

PROBLEM: After installing XP SP2 the performance of LaCie FireWire 800 drives will be considerably slower and probably not acceptable for most applications.

SOLUTION: LaCie have produced a Firmware update for their FireWire 800 drives

  • LaCie FW 800 Drives and Windows XP SP2 PDF readme

  • Download the LaCie XP SP2 firmware updater from HERE

Raven Shield and Nascar 2003?!

*walks away*.

Edit> Apparantly thie issues are mainly the fact the the XP firewall (now on by defaut instead of off), is obviously blocking multiplayer games. Switching the FW off solves the problem.

I've just installed SP2 yesterday on my gaming machine (i.e. non-mission critical system :P). The Security Center is pretty cool. All the usual apps I use seem to run fine so far ...

I'll let y'all know if I run into any probs.

As I promised, here's my XPeriences with SP2 so far if anyone is interested ...

I've now updated 4 systems with SP2 with a 75% success rate. Two were mine and two belonged to friends of which I'm their unofficial 24/7 tech support (i.e. they call whenever their systems have probs - usually spyware) ;)

Both my friend's systems were XP Home systems updated with Automatic Update and had no probs.

My own system with a fresh install of XP Home was updated using the SP2 Network Install package with no probs.

However, when I tried to update my wife's XP Pro rig with Auto Update, it got totally hosed :o We have 3 users on there, and could just get past the Welcome logon screen until the system would hang trying to load up the new SP2 "Security Center". I could get past this in Safe Mode however.

My wife's rig has had XP Pro on it for 2 years without probs, including lots of hardware changes/software installs/uninstalls. Fortunately, all our data is kept on a seperate partition so instead of wasting the whole evening troubleshooting, I just did a fresh install of WinXP Pro with the SP2 Network Installation pack and now everything has been fine for the past week with all our usual apps re-installed.

It was nice to have a fresh, clean reinstall anyway ...

Interesting how Microsoft removed the "Home" or "Pro" designation with the WinXP logo when you boot up with SP2 ... wonder why?
