Love this game and have recently started again after a couple of years. Dont know why I did not finish it before but I will this time plus the addons and some of the better mods. Only just finishing mission 5 but what I like is that the missions are very enjoyable AND different.

I have Operation Flashpoint and a couple of addons, is this worth playing ?

Have tried Call of Duty and similar games but did not like the hectic running around shooting in confusion i.e. there is no strategy or time to think.

Based on the above what other tactical games are out there ? Would value any opinions.

PS I only play single player.

 im the same way i like single player alot and the only problem with tactical shooters is the ai. But swat 3 close quarter battle has the best ai and makes u really feel like a swat officer if u dont like run and gun gameplay this is ur game super realistic and great controls. Plus it offers mod support although i dont believe it has any whrer near as active a comunity but u might find some cool mods. by the way i got it for 9.99 it is one of those gold editions. Other then that u might like the rainbow six series. DONT BE FOOLED DELTA FORCE MAY LOOK LIKE A TACTICAL SHOOTER BUT ITS NOT . stick with clancy  and i have hered flah point was good i bought a copy and it was defective is it worth trying to buy agian.

I have been fiddling around with Operation Flashpoint and trying to update the versions. Seems a bit dated in the graphics department and not as smooth as GR.

Is this game worth playing ?

Hiddden & Dangerous 2 yeh I forgot about that, I will give that a go too.

To each his own. It's a big NO for OFP as far as I'm concerned. :(

Conflict Desert Storm (I & II) are quite good - individual control of each specialist in a 4-man squad, play as SAS or US Special Forces, skill improvements (that DO make a real difference), good maps and involving missions - in outdoor & urban environments. You can them get them quite cheap these days (£5-£10 in the UK), so give them both a try !

OFP is fine if you update to the most recenty version, though the graphics are dated as noted above.

It does give you a real sense of freedom in that you will drive many vehicles (I used a farm tractor in one area) and you do get the opportunity to fly an attack helo - the story is compelling also.

The mechanics and weapons effects are also quite realistic (1 bullet can kill you).

Delta Force (in its various incarnations) is not,as correctly stated above, a tactical shooter - it is a glorified shoot 'em up with a basis in Special Forces operations. It is quite exciting to begin with but the attraction soon fades & replayability is limited as the missions always replay the same way - if you can find them for less than £3 then give them a try, otherwise they waste hard drive space & time!

I haven't played the Rainbow Six games (though I have the original somewhere around) so I cannot comment on them though other player's comments seem favourable.

I don't know about any of the WWII games as they are not my period & I have only played the "Dawnville" demo from (COD ?).

I think I will stick to GR and Expansions and Mods as so far I can not find anything that comes close, besides by the time I get through this lot Band of Brothers will probably be out.

Hidden & Dangerous 2 will get a run too I think.

Thanks for your input.

A lot of people are finding it hard to find a replacement for GR.

Even GR2 doesn't seem to live up to it's predecessor (speculation ofcourse).

I'm trying Joint Operations myself now, but already know it will not fill me with as much joy as GR did.

I'm still searching for the one...

H&D 2 is more an action game than GR, in that you can take more hits, but a head shot will kill. There are medkits, but you have to pack them in your planning stage and the characters are rated for first aid so that you usually have one man as the medic. When you use a health pack on another soldier, it takes 5 or 6 seconds and both men are unable to respond to enemy fire so you have to pick the right time to do this.

You can control each man in your 4 man squad directly, with an onscreen command menu or using a tactical map. There are 2 levels to the command system, it is like the SWAT system. The first level includes movement, engagaement, silent movement, silent enegagement (SD weapons only), action, tactical and a couple I forget. If you select movement, you have a choice of advance, hold, follow me, go to, take cover.

One interesting feature is that some Germans and Italians will surrender under fire and you can take their uniform and weapons and be in disguise for stealth missions. There is a meter that will run out if you are directly observed too much.

The misions are good and varied from arctic Norway, north Africa, Burma, Germany, a scuba infil mission, etc.

Once you complete a campaign you unlock the missions in quick mission. There are campaign modes for lone wolf and carnage ( harder objectives and you have to kill all the enemy).

I have found that it is the only game I really like after GR for replayability and fun.

How about Brothers in arms!!!

I saw a movie from E3 and it looked very nice. :) Two teams wich you could command "In game" just like in RS and they also showed a commandmap.

When it come as demo I have to test it before buy it, it might even be better then GR2

How is SoAF to play, more tactical then GR? Is it like RS? Please tell me!!!

SOAF is based on the GR engine, but has only 1 squad with 3 players, there are AI in some missions but you don't control them.

The missions are more indoor, CQB not the outdoor missions of GR. It is more simplified with a simplified interface. The radar map has built in waypoints to all objectives but I think you can turn it off.

You control your squad with a menu buttom.

It's worth buying out of a bargain bin, but that's as far as I would recommend it.

I agree with you about BIA, also take a look at at Gamespot at the preview for Close Combat First To Fight, a new squad based game based on the USMC.

For those who have both GR and SOAF, You can copy GR maps to SOAF (in a seperate mod folder). The environmet file (.env) needs to be updated through Sofie's environment editor. Need the model file from GR also in the new mod folder to make the maps work. I've tried it for original GR maps and DS maps. Not sure of IT maps. Adds some open terrain to SOAF.

p.s. zones for custom game types are lost and have to be redefined.

AI is fairly smart in SOAF. Look for cover when fired on and try to sneak up on you. Sometimes even flanking.

  • 4 weeks later...

SP only here too. Have Mohaa series for PC and Call of Duty. While I admit they all have their good points, they still lag behind GR, which is my first experience with Tom Clancy games btw.

The sales guy at the video store has been pestering me (like he did with GR btw) that I get Rainbow Six games and it looks ok but I'm not quite convinced yet.

Being a strategy games nut I found in GR what I was looking for. diferent ways to finish missions instead of rushy 'shoot them all ' games.

Maybe that's why I don't like babysit missions where instead of a ghost youhave to be a shield/hammer.

Since I'm new to the game, I still find myself mesmerized by the rich variety of solutions to each missions and the truckloads of mods for the game. I see no way of geting bored with GR inthe next 6 months at least but it would be nice to try another challenging game like this one.

Cheers.
