WhiteKnight77 1
I am using 1&1 for my website and my original package was 1000MB of webspace and 15GB of bandwidth a month. They have just increased bandwidth across the board for all of their packages. I now get 50GB of bandwidth for $9.99 a month. There is a Home Package for $4.99/mo with 500MB and 25GB and a Developer Package for $19.99/mo with 2000MB and 100GB. If you are looking for some decent web hosting in either Linux or Microsoft Windows, check them out.
SnowFella 8
What one would you recommend for a website noob like myself? Microsoft hosting or Linux hosting? Pretty much just looking to have somewhere to toss up heaps of renders and files...along with a normal site too ofcource. Getting sick and tired of only having 10Mb at my disposal
WhiteKnight77 1
When I first talked to this company on the phone, I was debating what to get. After a few questions, I figured the Linux would be better as it allows for more flexability in what you do. If you ever want to start running something like PHP, Linux allows you to unlike MS hosting. If you use FrontPage extensions, Linux allows you to do that too. Best of all, if you do not have some of the web creation software, 1&1 will even give it to you. Need an FTP client? You get one you can either download or get on the CD. Need an image program, Uleads PhotoImpact 8 SE is there even if it isn't PhotoShop and you can't beat the price. No matter who you go with, Linux hosting will be better IMO. SnowFella 8
Thanks for that input mate! Sounds like I might just end up with the same deal as you have then...ought to give me more storage space and bandwith than what I'd ever need but you you never know.
lexsis 0
1&1 is pretty good but like most, they require advanced payment to get those very low rates, my company is OLM olm.net or webaxxs.net low pricing, EXCELLENT phone support, been using them since 1999. SnowFella 8
That's what credit cards are for mate And I doubt I'd be ringing a company on the other side of the world any time soon for support, most likely be corresponding through email with them.
Rocky 1,224
Linux servers all the way. I have always kept an eye on 1&1, I didn't know about that BW increase though, very cool. Did you get any software freebies WK? The always advertsie loads of free software.
Rocky 1,224
That business package is great value, you usually only see that sort of BW for that price from cowboy hosts, but 1&1 are big. Cool deal.
firefly2442 0
Linux servers all the way. Ahmen to that! Woot!
Super-Bob 0
I still like Hostrocket the best for shared hosting. In the comparable package HR is $2 less, has unlimited email accounts, unlimited subdomains, 10 MySQL DBs, no problems ever (I have only ever submitted 3 trouble tickets, 2 was forgotten passwords, the others was needing MySQL restarted), plus the best support you will ever find. Don't they let you point numerous domains to your webspace, so in effect, you can host multiple domains, but without a reseller control panel?
WhiteKnight77 1
I got the free software sent to me (I could have downloaded it too, but wanted the CD) and it does come with a bunch of different goodies. They even include the PhotImpact 8 SE manual and the Net Objects Fusion manual. IMO, if you don't have some of the software to develop a website, good bang for the buck. At Hostrocket, you only get the one domain. I went with 1&1 for the 3 free domains (I gave one to my sis and hubby and the other to my brother). From the looks of things, both offer really good deals and similar packages with minorr differences.
SnowFella 8
Finally pulled my finger out and desided to sign up with 1&1 after a little time to think about it...proves to be a no go though as they only cater for US and Canadian customers After some quick checking of local, AUS, providers it turns out their deals are pretty crap compared to the 1&1 deal. So....any suggestions for a host that doesn't just cater for US and Canada???

Where does it say that? We are talking about web hosting yeh? 1&1 are world-wide AFAIK.
SnowFella 8
Didn't seem like that when I tried signing up...way down the bottom of the personal details page it clearly said they only cater for US and Canadian customers. Edit: screen grab straight from the personal details page added
WhiteKnight77 1
I would think that Scandanavians could use the UK 1&1 site.
Rocky 1,224
That's interesting. I'd do what WK suggested and try the .co.uk site.
SnowFella 8
I probably would if I still was based in Europe The UK one doesn't have the same offers either it seems, no free domains and only 10Gb/month transfer on the business package.
Dannik 43
I've just been through the UK site, and it is UK only. You cannot select which country you live in, just provide your address up to town name and postal code. It looks like 1&1 have North American, UK and French offices only. SnowFella 8
yup...noticed that myself too when I went through it. Looks like I'll have to start shopping elsewhere unfortunately.
