Buzz 0
I'm not sure if this is a tech suport topic or just general, but here goes. I was just reading in the newspaper about how MS is going to release it's new service pack 2 for WinXP soon. One of the comments and worries is how it's new security and built-in protection will possibly affect online gaming. Has anybody heard anything about this or know anything? I'm guessing that because GR is such an old game, that Ubi wouldn't be very quick about making a patch for it. I may be worrying unnecessarily, but the newspaper did specifically say it might affect online gaming, and I believe EVERYTHING that the newspaper says. Any informed comments? Crimson 0
Doubtful. A lot of people have already jumped the gun and downloaded SP2, and I've yet to see someone complain about online gaming problems. I guess it comes with a firewall that is actually worth using, so that may be what they're talking about.
Kurtz 4
I think it could make a difference if you are hosting a game, but it may depend if you have activated the XP firewall.

ghostie 0
I got the beta version installed. makes it easier to use the windows firewall but you can disable that option with ease. I don't see any issues in gaming but I never act as a server so that remains to be seen. I don't see much of a difference exept that some activex controls are blocked and you must manually run them if you want it to work. Also when you download anything it'll give you an option to run or cancel everytime. ---haven't figured out how to disable this yet
Buzz 0
For my PC, I've disabled the XP firewall, and am running Norton Personal Firewall as well as NAV. With the new update, will having the XP firewall enabled be redundant, and as a result slow or ineffecient? I also never host games. I would be interested, but have a router set up off of my broadband modem, and really have no idea how to configure it for hosting a game. The modem's instructions are all in Japanese, so figured it was too much of a pain in the ass to figure out. Guess I'll just have to wait and see about the update. Thanks! Simply disable XP's firewall as you originally did - the default configuration is "ON" but this can be turned to "OFF" as easily as before. This should cause no slowdown or lack of efficiency in your gaming experience. Edited July 26, 2004 by Shemyaza
WhiteKnight77 1
Buzz, get your wife to help you find the advanced settings. Look for the Forwarding page in the setup menu. Depending on the game you play, pu tthe ports needed in and check whether TCP/UDP and insert the host computer's IP (192.168.1.100?) in the IP box and save settings. What brand of router is it?
