sixb0nes 0
Hello again! I've decided to add holes to the barrel assembly on my Sten model, instead of going the easy route and texturing them. Here is a reference pic: Reference I attempted to use 9 small cylinders and do boolean cuts for each one. The cuts themselves worked, but added some really funky faces: Reference My question, is this the only way to accomplish this? I am guessing it is, so is there any way to avoid such artifacts, or do I have to manually clean these up (argg!)? Thanks again for the help! Peace six
Chems 0
No this is correct, when you add the holes new faces needed to be drawn. For a face to be created there needs to be 3 polys connected, so the new polys youve added onto the model need to be connected to the nearst polys with out crossing other edges so the lines will go down the model like that left and right. Inless your a real bright spark I doubt youll understand this cause I explained it pretty crapply, but once you learn spline modeling and do this your self manually it will be like second nature. If you delete these you will just have holes in your model. So your boolean was sucessful and clean. Good Job. Did you collapse the cylinders before hand like a clever beaver or do it 1 by 1 just purly out of intrest?
sixb0nes 0
Hey Chems! Yeah I understand what you're saying, I'm just trying to figure out the best way to clean it up. When rendering, the extra polys aren't pefect so it skews the cylinder a bit. I'm not sure if texturing it will cover those up or not, but I feel wrong leaving it that way Thanks for the idea about collapsing! I never thought to collapse prior, so I had to Select->Boolean->Pick Operand B->Unselect and repeat x 9. Thanks for the tip! Cheers! GRT 0
How many polys is the gun? Sounds like your trying to get every little face out. Now n days guns can be higher in the poly range.
Chems 0
Do you mean that you get kinda a darker face on the barrel now? That is a cause of bad boolean. Its when on vert is deeper back into a model than another and the black shows cause max creates like a shadow, look at from all angels and see if you can see a side of the cylinder cut stickin out more, if so try moving it till you lose this dark spot.
