Government newspaper lashes back at American "propaganda"; no word on whether Kim Jong Il enjoyed the first game.

Red Storm's upcoming mutliplatform tactical shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 has North Korea up in arms, according to the American military newspaper Stars and Stripes. Apparently the North Korean government is miffed about the storyline and setting of the game, wherein a North Korean general diverts food to the military, eventually taking power of the country and invading China. Players join the elite Ghost Recon force as they intervene on behalf of China to repel the attack.

Scenes from videos of the game, debuted at this year's E3, caught North Korea's attention. “Through propaganda, entertainment and movies,” read a recent column in the Tongil newspaper, "[Americans] have shown everyone their hatred for us. This may be just a game to them now, but a war will not be a game for them later. In war, they will only face miserable defeat and gruesome deaths.”

Such strong words did not seem to deter Christopher Allen, a designer on the Ghost Recon 2 team. “When we developed the story background, we aimed at staying away from key current or specific events while still having a reasonable setting for a conflict,” Allen wrote. “We are focusing the story on a splinter group in the North Korean military that sparks this conflict, not the entire country.”

Despite North Korea's protests, development will continue on Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 for all consoles and the PC. All versions are set for release in November 2004. Check out the GameSpace for more information on the game.

One of the dumber things I have read in a long time

Then again combine this with the general settings of most games & also tactical side of Full Spectrum Warrior - looking to be an awesome game but with some serious Propaganda for the "kids" - hey this is how the miltary works - come join us.

Then take all this into account and read this :

HERE

Read into it how you will but its all not to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Oh and not forgetting the blatantly sicko Kuma War .... not very good idea realy, making iraq war to be a game is exactly whats needed to dumb down whats realy going on out there. :nono:

I want you to pay close attention to the political party that is pushing that sort of agenda in America. Both of those bills are being introduced and pushed by the democratic party. Keep that in mind this November at the voting booth.

Ppppffffffffff yeah right like we really belive the North Korean troops can take on the Special Forces from around the world.

Theese guys may talk tough but thats about all they can do.

Who cares if this game gets kids interested in the military, it will make a man out of them if they join.

Let them have their fun, it lasts only a short time before they are working 9 to 5 like the rest of us.

Becareful on what you say. The Million Man Army of North Korea (although under-equipped) is still a formidable foe. Numbers can make a difference, and usually do. I'm not saying America would lose (no way, we're the best. :) ) but it could cause some heavy casualties.

North Korean special forces are pretty well-trained. And thou their regulars don't train as much as western regulars per day, their early start (since childhood) can make them formidable opponents.

btw they train harder then most armies, just not as well as western trained troops.

Put yourself in there shoes .. I think it might be a different story.

Plain & simple - dont ###### with N Korea.

Maybe they should have had GR2 in the future in space ... keep it neutral.

So ... say a leaked game came from Korea - made in the north a simple game of war that was placed in america / south america where you play Koreans & shoot american soldiers .. are you trying to say you would think .. "hey those ragdoll effects are cool" .... or would you some how throw a fit .. how dare they do this!! etc. - think about that one.

Flip the tables and work out how you would react. Always easier in the playgrounds at school when your friends with the bullys ..... oooooh flame ahoy! :D

Nobody say anything silly like "North Korea dont make games" - its an example. More than likely there version wouldnt have ragdoll effects, it would look maily like "Horace goes skiing" for zx81 / spectrum.

Well....there is that Medal of Honor game set in WW2 in the Pacific Theater and starts on Dec. 7th 1941...and the Japanese have had it for a while and wow! Seems to be selling good.

Like it's been said, the North Koreans dont have anything else more important (like feeding their people for example...) than to bash ONE game?

Unless.....there really *is* (was) a plot by some rogue general to overthrow the N. Korean government and invade China and some game developers thwarted his plot by pure accident (or design because they all played "Golden Eye" one dozen too many times. ;) )

North Korean policies are weird. Basicly nothing western products or trends arent allowed in there. Dunno if they even have TV-channels there that show something else than propaganda.

Also that link El Oso posted about mandatory military service... weird I say. I can understand a small country like where Im living has a mandatory military service that Im just about to enter, but a country that has the largest military and spends more money in "defence" than the rest of the world (over 500 billion dollars I read) needs mandatory service. Politicians... ######ing politicians I say

this is stupid......a country is upset over a game?! Well, that must mean that they have nothing more important to worry about.....I swear, at times I question whether or not the human animal is the most intelligent... <_<

IF and only IF the N. Korea made a FPS in wich you kill american civilians and put bombs in buildings in New York how would you feel ???

North Korea may have a big and ill equipped armed forces, but as Stalin said, "quantity has a quality of its own." But the USofA would still beat the tar out of them :o= After giving them :nono: Honestly you've got to be pretty sad to complain about a video game. I don't remember Russia complaining about the first Ghost Recon

There are those of us who can think for ourselves and seperate Reality from Virtual Reality, but the fact remains this is still a sort of propaganda from the West namely America. It's aimed more at getting kids to think that America/The West has an enemy and that enemy is now North Korea.Kinda fits in with the Democratic Policy of ridding the World of any form of Socialism, namely Korea and then finally China.(and they don't hide the fact either, read their manefesto)

It may be interesting to know that the USA consider N.Korea a considerable threat, enuf to post a whole fleet of destroyers just outside their waters when the Iraqi invasion took place.

I would be watching China very carfully with their latest demands for steel imports rocketing to unprecedented levels only leads me to believe that they are arming themselves ready to defend their country, and i strongly believe we could be in for a New Cold War.

For those that don't know it we are at WAR, against "Terrorism", against "Communism" against anything that stands in the way of "NEO-Conservatism" or western capitalism. Not everyone likes it and why should they, Your god given right as a Human Being is to believe in what you like and stand up for it.

Whether you like it or not we are under the rule of the American Empire and like all Great Empire's throughout history it will colapse.Time people woke up to what's REAL in this world.

In the Uk we had elections recently only 40% of voters Voted and that was helped by Postal Voting.Time the Politicians realised that more than half the population don't agree with what is happening in our Governement's and if i were a Politician I would be concerned at this fact.

Sleep Easy Cus it doesn't affect you!!

If memory serves, GR1 did cause an uproar somewhere in Eastern Europe. I can't remember where though; maybe another GR1 vet from "back in the day" will remember.

I'm not sure a "New Cold War" is imminent. Not if Bush gets reelected. Although, goodness knows what'll happen if Kerry is elected.

Thankfully either of the two will be out of office by the time it's my turn to serve (hopefully).

Ohhh.... Trucks! is on... fun fun. :D

Funny how this works out. Personally Ive always thought everyone should serve some time in the armed services. When you look at how crazy young people are nowadays, it can only do them good, Oso, I think you might agree that in some way your military service changed your life somehow for the better.

And here I thought maybe this would somehow sway me away from the Democratic candidate side. Its all good though, I dont vote and wont until I see something worth voting for and not just the lesser of two evils.

:wall: .....Like hitting a brick wall....i think that the north korea would really have to think real long and hard about taking on any of the free world countries......delta force, army special forces & rangers, US marines w/recon just here in the states.....now that is not counting units of british sas, french legionars, our brothers from canada special ops...South korea special marines and think about some others specials forces from the land down under, spains spec ops, this is just a few and let us not forget about the old boy the swiss one of the most highly trained army's in the world....also all the little country's that would sent forces :o= ............this is just a few if i left any out i do apologize........but does anyone real think that they would be dumb enough to insite a fight looking at the make up of the warriors they would have to do against.\ yes they might create some damage but does anyone think they would not get twice as much in return.

I would think that they would play the game first to ensure that it is fun than risk the alternative...........which is a no win situation....for them........it is not worth fighting over a.......... ..... GAME...hawkeye_TAW

I'm a Brit but live in South Korea. They guys here have to to two and a half years military service and it's hell for them. Almost no pay and about one day off a month. They may have only about half as many soldiers as N.Korea but the N.Korean army is a wreck. They ain't gonna be bothering anyone.

As I remember they also went ape###### over the N.Korean bad guy in the last James bond (crap) movie. Considering the way they slaughter and starve their own people it's rich that they take offence at a game.

On a related note I was in Japan last year and saw in a huge computer store a massive cardboard cut out display for the Medal of honour pacific game. It featured a Japanes air craft carrier witha a rising sun flag spread across its deck. Above it was a squadron of American planes dropping tons of bombs onto it.

I thought at the time that it was weird that they would display a game like that, showing their own navy getting the pearl harbor treatment. Then after this hissy fit from N.Korea it shows that the Japanes arn't as sensitive.

I wish i could post thepic of it here that i took before the security guard chased me out.

Well put Born To Kill - sumed it up nicely.

what i realy like about this thread is that its vast views & good read ... needs more of this elswhere.

As said - a games a game but when your young its most things, pretty much desensitising you to whats happening today so you can then say "yay our boys are doing good, support the troops" .. even though they are being used to slaughter the ###### out of innocent iraqis "im just carrying out orders" - fair enough ..... yeh right.

Im nearly 30 and can tell the difference between "reality" etc as been quoted in some posts - but stupid dumb ###### teens cant ... realy, especialy these days .. infact deffinately these days!

Its simple .. support us and or joins us .... if you dont your against us ... etc etc.

Tell you what im not american but would ######ing hate to be a teenager in america now in this day & age - scary ######.

And on a lighter note ... any news on raven shield 1.6 patch - !!:lol::):D:ph34r:

PS - sorry chaps been drinking before I posted ... not always a good idea!

PPS - anyone considered that N.Korea couldnt give a ###### and would probably not take on any army in combat and just let of a nuke or 3? This is more likely.
