WytchDokta 6
I just came across in the PC mag I just bought. An ad advertising AVC broadband. "Discover Broadband Via Satellite Wherever You Live" It's 512kbps, satellit broadband, £29.99 a month (not as cheap as some broadband providers, but broadband ain't available in this area [note: this AVC broadband is satellit broadband]) "Installed and configured within 7 days". That's what they say. They gots a website too, AVC Broadband I might get it (when I can afford it). So what do you guys think? Standard broadband currently ain't availabe in my area, but I could get broadband via satellite, right?
Super-Bob 0
Satellite is one way, it has no upload, you have to dial in for that part. So don't even consider it.
WytchDokta 6
Ah, so I gotta wait 'til broadband is available in my area after all.
Dannik 43
Also, satellite ping times are a bit worse than a 56k modem. A 56k connection to a server may ping at ~100ms, while satellite, you would be lucky to see ~600 - ~1000ms latency. Useless if you ever want to play games online. WytchDokta 6
How do I find out if my "exchange" is being updated?
Avey 0
Ring BT?
WytchDokta 6
There's a breakbeat DJ called BT....
magnumkp 0
Nah, go here: http://www.bt.com/broadband/bb_info.jsp?ta...K&obsNoSee=true Click your area on the map and find out. Not all Exchanges are being upgraded in August, butI think BT have said that all exchanges will be upgraded (which they haven't said before). There is probably something about it on their news page http://62.172.198.79/broadband1/update/index.asp They have certainly change the above map about so you can't see how many more people need to register to get it. I think it is just coincidence that me and Supa are getting it in the same month. I have seen an exchange upgrade as late as 07/05 (and that was a few months ago, they had clearly got loads of signatures and then get told they have to wait well over a year). Ya right KP, they say they will be updating all the exchanges but they don't say when. Guess I added 2 and 2 and got 5.
WytchDokta 6
Looks like my area is between enabled and awaiting build, on the outskirts of enabled.... How I gonna find out if it is actually enabled (or in build) here? This map is rubbish.
WytchDokta 6
Oh, it IS enabled here: 01/10/2003 - - SSSHM Enabled Ah, so now how do I got about gettin me broadband?
magnumkp 0
Phone up a service provider, bt, pipex, nildram, etc and sign up. They will/may charge you an activation fee (about £50 I think) and a few days later you should have broadband.
McNamee 0
I'm getting it at the end of July (woop-de-doo), i'm going with pipex, good ISP, (thanks for pointing them out boz).
WytchDokta 6
After I 'em up, how long do it take before I get me broadband?
Avey 0
Depends on how busy they are.
[TCS]BlackMamba 0
I got Pipex (very good ISP IMHO good support and easy to use) and it took 14 days that was in feb + they sent me E-Mails every 3 days telling me what was happening and each giving me an updated completion date. This made it seem quicker and more efficent because the date stayed the same all the way through showing they have good service and keep to promises.
