Buggeration // Rig is busted....

Recommended Posts

There's always something wrong with this poxy rig!! Last week, the modem was up the shoot (or least it was pretending it was)....now it works fine....

I downloaded the Vice City patch (it fixes minor graphical issues that occur on some systems. I just so happened to have those graphical 'issues'). I fire up Vice City it loads all the way to the menu screen then just drops dead. But, it's like someone has cranked the gamma right down (I certainly had not touched the gamma in game or on desktop), the menu screen is almost black, I can just make out the pink menu text. So I go to the the options to change the gamma, but the mouse won't move at all. Mouse is dead. Keyboard non responsive. Keyboard dead. **System Overload** System crash.... Commencing shutdown sequence....It won't, it won't shut down!! It just stays on that screen. So I flick the switch on the back of the rig to turn it off. Not a good idea I know, but it's the only way it would shutdown.

Immediately I flick the switch on the back of the rig to turn the power back on. Power Up! Huh, no wait....Power Down.... **Buggeration** What the? Power Trippin'? Then I realised the rig had tripped the power. Again. But it had not just tripped the power to itself, it had tripped the power to the WHOLE HOUSE yet again!! But it doesn't end there folks, lemme come back to this saga in a mo'....

I have got a surge protected extension lead for my rig. There's only 1 double socket in my room. I'm ruuning the surge protected ext. lead from there. Into the surge protected ext. lead is plugged all the important stuff for my rig (monitor, main power to CPU, speakers)....and there's also another normal extension lead plugged into it which leads over to the other side of my room. That one has got my HiFi, TV and Dreamcast plugged into it. I can't plug those other things anywhere else with just one double socket. An no, it didn't trip the power because I gotta lot stuff plugged into the extension leads....when the rig was down stairs I used just the surge protected ext. lead. Just 4 things plugged into it....and it would still trip the whole power in the house!! That is, when I flicked the switch to on the back to off and then immediately back to on. So, it could be a faulty surge protected extension lead....

Now, let's get back to the heavyweight jam....

So I fire up the rig again....loads up fine. Then I notice the green light on my Creative Labs speakers (they're just 2 speakers) slowly fade....Losing power...can't maintain frequency....Speaker Sytem is going down! "All stations, this is Red Six, we have a Speaker System down in Nightmare's room, I repeat, Speaker System down!!". I dunno what happened, the sound was quite low, not cranked to the max (I never have the sound cranked to the max), so blowing the speakers is out of the question. **Buggeration**

Ah, man I love this rig  Luckily I had kept my old speakers....I unplugged my Creative Labs speakers. In doing so, I noticed the adapter for the speakers that plugs into the ext. lead is hot. But not just normal hot, we're talking scorching hot here. Plug the adapter back in....to no avail, the green light fades again. So I plug them old speakers, they work fine, green light hasn't faded on them....yet....

And you thought it was over? Well, you thought wrong!! Haha! the saga don't end just yet!

I put in the C&C Generals - Zero Hour disk to start playing in order to try out my mod I'm working on. Loads up fine...until it gets to just before the menu screen, same as GTA VC. System crash again....la lala la la....Only way to shut it down is to flick that switch again!! *Flick!* There it goes. I turn off the speakers and monitor too, trying to avoid it tripping the power again. I got to switch it back on....*Flick!*....Power up, business as usual. Man, I was preparing for the whole power in the whole to be tripped again....

After ir loaded up, I go to uninstall that GTA VC patch, assuming it was that (last thing I installed, but why it affect C&C Generals - Zero Hour?). No unistall thingy. Sod this, I copied my save game files to desktop and unistalled the game. I shutdown, restart and try C&C Generals - Zero Hour again....And it still don't load up the menu!! What the? So I flick off the switch on the back, turn off the monitor and speakers, flick the switch back on. Everything looking good.... "We are now in the approach phase everything still looking good". I run virus scanners etc. "Fourteen hundred feet, still looking very good", no viruses found.

So I try the game again....and the buggeration strikes yet again!! Still don't load the menu!! So I flick off the switch on the back, turn off the monitor and speakers, flick the switch back on. Loads up fine, and here I am with todays Sitrep....

Actually, this rig is quite unstable. I haven't defragged it ina ages. Infact, I don;t think I've defragged it ever sinced I had it, I had for like 2 years!! (reformatted sveral times though). I'm not reformatting or defragging now, I'm just waiting 'til I get my new rig, which won't be for like a month or more, wehn I can afford it. Being unemployed at the mo' doesn't help the funding of my new rig....driving test attempt # 3 coming up on the 14th June though, so I hope I pass. I been told I can go back to work at the airbase (by my manager there) if I can get there. "Getting there" involves passing my driving test (in my case) so I get there to work!

Buggeration. Buggeration indeed. So say it loudly and proudly:

BUGGERATION!!

Sounds like you might have a power supply issue, as this could account for the problems you are experiencing whilst gaming, with your Creative Labs speaker jack becoming hot, with the surge protector tripping the entire house and before with your modem refusing to connect/stay connected to the internet (especially if it is an internal modem).

What hardware do you have installed that would be drawing power from your PC's power supply? Does your power supply get hot when your PC is on? What is the rated wattage of your power supply? What are the specs of your PC? Does your monitor 'piggy-back' from your PC's power supply?

Ahhhh... more problems I see.

Allow me to refer you to my previous post regarding your modem.

Is your computer near a window or other portal with possible (outside) interfereance?

If yes continue...

Is your cable made of heavyduty gage or just standard pohone cable?

If heavyduty, unplug...

Is your computer plugged into a powerbar?

If yes, unplug...

Throw computer out window.... Take up skipping to techno...

Cheers,

Mike

What hardware installed?

About 35 GB of games and utilities.

I don't think the power suplly gets hot when the rig on...lemme just check a mo'.... *has a good feel* ooooooooohhhhhh.... er.....nope, it's all cold.

Rated wattage?

hmm.... The ext. lead says: "245V RMS 50Hz AC", so that don't really answer your question....

"Class 2 voltage limiting by means of shunt type device 5000 Amps" I don't see not Watt anywhere....

To answer those questions, I had to get under the computer desk! *gets out from under the computer desk* *forgets to watch his head as he comes out* *bang!, knocks his head on underneath of computer desk (accidently)*

What are the specs of your PC?

Win 98 SE

AMD Duron 1.2Ghz

256MB Ram

40 GB hard drive

Soundblaster Live 5.1

Logitech Internet Keyboard

Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer Optical Mouse

Motorola SM56 V90 56gay modem, I mean er....56k modem.

Anything else?

Basically, this new rig not good compared to my new rig what I getting (new rig has got digital LCD display on the front of the case displaying time, fan temps, hard drive status' etc etc....)

And you guys still never said "Buggeration" like I told you to! <_<

EDIT: C&C Generals - Zero Hour still ain't loading up  It ain't because I been editing the files for my mod. The mod was working fine yesterday, I haven't changed anything since yesterday but it still don't work. I did install the latest nVidia display drivers yesterday too. Maybe they makin' Zero Hour no work, but why?
