calius 0
Hi, Not the most original of threads but Im looking now to buy a new graphics card as my current GF4 4200TI has nearly died due to lack of original fan and botched temproary fan to keep it going .... Ive checked out UK prices (im uk) .... and heres 2 I have seen : MSI 128M FX5700-Ultra TD Tv/DVI Chipset: Geforce FX 5700 Chipset Features: NVIDIA Cine FX 2.0 Core Speed: 475Mhz Memory: 128Mb Memory Speed: 900Mhz Memory Latency: DX Support: AGP Interface: Yes PCI Interface: No Voltage Support: Output: VI: No VO: No Warranty: Yes - 1 Year = £141 ----------------------------- or : 128Mb Excalibur (HiS) Radeon 9800Pro Platinum D-Sub, DVI, TV-out (Retail) Graphics Processor Powered by ATI RADEON™ 9800 PRO Visual Processing Unit 380MHz Graphics Engine Clock Memory Configuration 128/256MB DDR memory 256-bit memory interface RAMDAC Dual integrated 10-bit per channel palette DACs operating at up to 400MHz Bus Interface AGP 8X / 4X = £158.63 Budget is £200 but less is better for me. The clock speeds are different but whats the perfomance loss/gain between them? ATI & NVIDIA Gcard users give honest replys ... Cheers.
McNamee 0
Take a look at the XFX GForce 5900XT, it seems a very good card for what it's worth (£160), check this: XFX GEFORCE FX 5900XT AGP 128 MB GRAPHIC...- Reviewed by Paddy This is a fantastic mid-range card. Easy to install and get started gaming. I've played Far cry, Joint operations etc on it. All with very smooth graphics at hi-res. On 3dmark03 i managed a score of 6500 using the overclocking facility which come free with the pack. On comparison, this graphic card can easily compete with the radeon 9800 pro( if u have a good solid pc to go with it!) and it's only half the price. If your thinking of upgrading your graphic card to play the latest games, but don't want to fork out your kid's college money. Go for this card it won't disappoint. Have a look... I'm getting it, great value for money...
Crimson 0
The only reason it's a tough choice for me is because I'm a loyal nVidia fan, but the truth is the 9800Pro will blow away the 5900XT, especially at high resolutions with pumped up AA and AF. I would go with the ATi
Chef-Scott 0
Had an nvidia card (5200, bottom end card, but nice) worked great with GR and IL-2. But just got a ATI 9800 Pro, doubt that I'll be going back to nvidia anytime soon. Buy the 9800 Pro card, the 5700 Ultra dosen't even come close.
NurFACE 0
Give yourself another week or two once the market has both ATI and Nvidia new cards out the price will drop some more. Nvidia 5900 series and Ati 9800 series are good choices with reasonable prices in the near future.
calius 0
cheers chaps. I have been "nvidia man" for some time but from whats been said here and other places Im going to go for 9800 pro ati card, seems to me that this range of ati and the nvidia fx range seem to look like 9800 pro comes out on top. And yes I am going to wait for the new range to come out to see the price drop. Ooooh if i did have the cash I would hold out on nvidia for there newest card .... but for now 9800 pro will be good & a very good price too now & very soon. PS - I have detinator drivers installed, when I get ati I guess download latest drivers, uninstall nvidia's - then run "detinator RIP" .... then remove card ... install new ati gcard ... intall latest drivers. Hope there isnt any problem with straggling old nvidia files after that.
WhiteKnight77 1
Between the Radeon 9800 Pro/XT models and the GF FX 5900/5950 (both in regular and Ultra models), they score so close in benchmarks that the difference is hard to distinguish between the 2. The brand to get now is down to preference.
calius 0
mainly price is the ussue .. ati seem to be cheaper, so all good if its as good as 5900
Chef-Scott 0
Between the Radeon 9800 Pro/XT models and the GF FX 5900/5950 (both in regular and Ultra models), they score so close in benchmarks that the difference is hard to distinguish between the 2. That is until the AA and AF are cranked up. Then the ATI cards show their true strength. 8 pixel pipeline vs. 4 pixel pipeline. (Sorry, it was just fun to say "pixel pipeline" twice)
WhiteKnight77 1
You did forget to remember that the nVidia cards womped the ATI cards in OpenGL though. That is why the closeness of the cards. I guess it all averages out though. I seem to recall (they were OCed mind you) that even with AA and AF cranked up the LeadTek Winfast A380 (same card I have) trounced all other cards in the games benchmarks over at Anadtech.com (and was the fastest overall card when OCed save for one benchmark and that was to another GF FX card). Crimson 0
True, but the 5950 is quite a bit more expensive than the 9800 Pro... roughly $150 in fact. I would get the 9800 Pro over the 5900XT.
projectile 0
Get a R9800 pro GFX card thats using the new R360 instead of the R350. As R350 is not long in production, newer R9800 pro uses the R360 Chipset. Later that the R9800 can be modded into R9800XT thur bios. Then change the HSF to Arctic Cooler or Zalman Heatsink....
