I'm running a 2.6c, 9800xt, is7, 1gig of geil 3500 ram, wd80se...

I have a generic turbolink 420watt $20 psu. The problem is sometimes my screen will freeze up in windows. No bsod or anything just whatever is on the screen will freeze that way and I'll have to hit the restart button everytime. It can happen randomly, when i'm on the web, playing a game, in a program. I'm wondering if it's a psu related problem or if it's something else. Everything is up to date, drivers, patches etc, temps are 40-45 idle and 50 at load so I don't think theres a problem there. Anyone have a similar problem? If it is the psu, what would you suggest. I don't mind dropping 100 bucks on a good one but is that really necessary given my current setup?

I had a similar problem a few weeks a ago....just surfing the web I'd hear a click noise from the HD and the machine would lock up...replaced my old Maxtor with a WD and hasn't come back....like I said its similar...but may not be the same.

A 420 Watt would be just fine for your setup. A $20 PSU that runs at 420 Watts is a bit shady... might be low quality hardware. Make sure you properly diagnose the problem before shelling out $90 on a PSU before realising you need a new HDD, as NY stated.

I had a problem about 18 months ago and first thought it was the HD and replaced that ($119 WD 80GB 8MB cache) and still had problems, replaced the PSU for $115 and haven't had problems since.

The problems you seem to be having though do not sound like a PSU problem. If you were restarting randomly I would suspect your PSU but not at this time.

To find out how big a PSU you really need check out the Power Supply Wattage Calculator. Once you add everything in your system (or prospective system) up add 50W to be on the safe side.

I used the calculator and it added up to 389 watts. +50 brings it to 439, which is more than my psu is rated.

I don't hear any click noises from the HD but once in a while i do hear a high pitched humming noise coming from it. The freezes are random though.

how do you diagnose a hard drive?

  • 3 weeks later...

I got a new power supply, noisetaker 470 watt. My computer still hangs and freezes randomly. I opened the event log in the administration tools and looked at what error messages came up around the time when my computer froze.

The same problem was evident in all events. I got this Remote_Procedure_Call Failed to load. or something to that effect. What is this?

(RPC) A protocol which allows a program running on one host to cause code to be executed on another host without the programmer needing to explicitly code for this. RPC is an easy and popular paradigm for implementing the client-server model of distributed computing. An RPC is initiated by the caller (client) sending request message to a remote system (the server) to execute a certain procedure using arguments supplied. A result message is returned to the caller. There are many variations and subtleties in various implementations, resulting in a variety of different (incompatible) RPC protocols.

Pulled this definition off of Google. Have you checked for a virus, or spyware that could've changed something in your PC?

Get diagnostic software from the HDD manufacturers website it will tell you if ther is anything wrong with your HDD. Im on my second maxtor 80GB and I only built my PC in feb this year. My second one now has bad sectors and my PC runs very slow despite its 2500XP processors. :( Mine problems tend to start with random hangs and crashes then escelate to regular ones especialy when i have Igor and GR open despite my 512 DDR 333 PC2700 RAM.

i guess i should check my hdd, that's the only thing i haven't. I have adaware, mcafee a/v+firewall, and spybot. Had 1 remnant of a virus that was attached in teamspeak 2. still got a crash after though. i'll check my hdd and see...

hdd checks out. Seems that when my computer reboots it has something to do with a device driver. maybe a faulty driver. I'm probably going to uninstall hardware and do a process of elimination to figure out what's causing this.

mcafee,,, Had 1 remnant of a virus that was attached in teamspeak 2.

Was the file called keypress.dll that MacAffee said was a virus? MacAffee now sees that as a virus when it is actually part of TS. It is used for using a keystroke to press to talk.

Go to TeamSpeak.org and do a search. It seems that that .dll is a key logger of some sort (I haven't been to the TS site in a while and I have been reading about this at RSi's forums). MacAffee may be right after all, but there is a new file being talked about being at the TS website. I will check it out tomorrow.

It's not infected with a virus, the latest virus signatures used give a false reading on this file:

10-06-2004 Background

As of about a week ago, many users within the Teamspeak community informed us of a possible virus issue -- specifically with the "keypress.dll" file which is installed by the Teamspeak client.

The Problem

Since we were informed of this issue the Teamspeak Team has been heavily involved in trying to determine the accuracy of this claim. After rigorous internal testing and numerous phone calls into all of the major antivirus companies including Symantec (Norton Antivirus), Network Associates (McAfee), and Trend Micro, NONE of these companies can verify NOR deny that a virus actually exists in "keypress.dll".

To the best of our collective knowledge, it is so far more likely that this is a "false positive" -- meaning that the antivirus application is finding data in keypress.dll that LOOKS like the same sort of data found in an infected file containing the Trojan "PWS-Wexd" (virus)...even though the file is most likely not infected at all.

you can D/L an updated version of the keypress.dll that wont cause an alert ->Click Here

I still don't understand what could be causing my computer to crash, I took out ts2, all my drivers are up to date but a certain device driver is causing xp to crash. The error message only says that and cannot find which one is causing the error. Anyone else have a problem with this?

I figured out what the problem was. It was the graphics device driver causing my intermittent freezes and reboots, the infinite loop deal that i now see plagues so many people with ati graphics cards. Dam U ATI!! :wall: Turned fastwrites and write combining off, don't ask me what they are but it was suggested that I turn them off. took off my OC. I'll see if this solves the problem.
