My pc is going blank.

Recommended Posts

Well i have XP.I went to start/run and typed in msconfig.went to boot.sys(i think thats whats its called). To change it to safemode,i then went to advanced and checked debug(i wanted to see what it would do). After that i clicked apply and restart nowafter the windows xp loading screen the screen goes black and thats it.I can get the black screen where it says if you want to start in safe mode, safe mode with network prompt, start in known last configuation then start in normal mode.Ive tried them all but it still doesnt show the desktop.Anyone know how to get it there or take off the debug part.

I think you can press F8 or something like that and it should take you to that screen. It may be different for your computer but if it don't work try the others.

Got to do it when the computer is starting.

Are you using NTFS or FAT32 as your file system? If it's FAT32, you could use a DOS boot disk to access your hard drive, and manually fix the BOOT.INI file.

Overview

You need access to the filesystem though. Alternately, you can use your XP CD (assuming you don't have an OEM 'on the hard drive' or 'recovery CD' version to run the recovery console. I'm not certain if you can fix the BOOT.INI from the recovery console, but I'm reasonably sure you can.

Well i just reinstalled windows xp.I put the xp cd in and turned my pc on.I chose it to install over my old windows xp but not to delete the old one(thinking it might delete all my files which has my models and maps :( ).So i got it to goto the desktop after it installed everything and i changed the msconfig back to normal. Now when i load it asks if i want to use:

Windows XP Home Professional or

Windows XP Home Professional

so i choose the first one and it takes me back to the blank screen.i choose the second one and it takes me to desktop fine like nothing happen.but after i do that i restarted it and keeps asking me the same.Is there a way to take off the XP i just installed since i edited the boot.ini.

btw thanks alot dannik your helping me alot

To remove the first 'bad' XP entry, here you go:

1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties

2. Select 'Advanced' -> 'Startup and Recovery' -> 'Settings'

3. In the 'default operating system' drop down box at the top, select the second entry and reduce the 'time to display startup options' (paraphrasing), set the time to something very low. One to five seconds, max.

Now, on bootup, it will default to the 'good' boot settings, and only show the option for a few seconds at most. Alternately, you can edit the startup file from the same tab and just remove the bad entry, although making a mistake might cause the same problems again.

You are very welcome, of course. I'm a hack, but I've been in similar situations way to many times not to try my best. XP is certainly the most robust OS Microsoft has ever released, but now you know the fear caused by debug mode.

Now don't do it again. :P
