and everytime someone got shot I'd scream out NOOOOO! It's scary... :(

Been playing GR too much?

That's like some hardcore gamers I know....the been playing games like GR too much and when the get home from work....They open thier car door, take cover behind it. Peep out around the edge of the door, checking for snipers, anti-tank teams etc. It's clear, so they make a break for it....Then they see something and shout something like:

"LOOKOUT!! Sniper at the window!! Hit the deck!!". Everybody in the street looks at them in a wierd way. So the hardcore gamer crawls slowly to the door step, and this is where he realises that it was infact his cat at the window....

Hey NM, long time no see.......

I know a dude who played CS for so long, when he got out from his chair, he had lost alot of muscle in his leg, and was hobbling around for a week or two....

GR is scary when all your mates are dead. If I'm saving I make it a requirement that all team members make it through, if not then they can die. I've played em all through so many times and played my favs on quickmission, that damn creekbed firefight or defend or whatever and the stronghold too or some recon which is cool, I like the High Sierra for that, Hunting Lodge is fun for firefight. The Market map always gives me fits. Stone Bell on Elite without any GL is a test for sure, you can run up to the other end of the road and see the Russian horde moving up it, holy &@#$! Then you die. I like most all of the mods with missions, but my favorite is still 12 Weeks. Knight Fork heh? he he. Can you feel the Rage?

I haven't got atound to DS or IT yet. But I have been d/l alot of mods and trying to make my own campaign. For a long time I used cheats to play SP...so...when i tried MP I SUCKED. lol. anyways I hope people can d/l my first two missions (try are in the Mission Mods forum). I hardly ever play SP anymore. It just gets boring. lol. ;)

EDIT: I only think that the game is completed if you complete all missions with one attempt each. No saves or restarts. In real life you only get one chance. ALWAYS! ;)

  • 1 month later...

I'm a strategy games man myself. Adicted to Medieval Total War. Didn't think much about FPSs till I got the MOHAA series and later played Call of Duty. They were ok.

But Acouple weeks ago I bought GR golden edition because the vid. store guy had been pestering me about it, it was at a bargain price and needed something new for the low wait for Rome Total War.

I was delightfully surprised when I began playing it, though the training scenarios never prepare you for what's coming. It was almost like being in the real thing. The scenery, the sounds, the sky, everything looked just great. The first time I got killed (like 2 minutes after I had begun) I was shocked!! Never saw it coming. Being used to several hits before dying I didn't know what to do. Tried againg just to have my whole squad wiped out a few paces off the insertion point, playing recruit on the castle quick game!!! :wall:

That was more than I could stand. I shut down the game, respectfully placed it in its jewel case and moved to safer games. A week ago I summoned enough courage to try it again, after reading the forums a bit I decided to be more careful. After 3 exhausting hours an 4 tries I managed to end the quick game. Man this game is hard at easy but one of the best games I've ever played. Nothing else has touched my cd driver since, can play only one mission a day, otherwise I end up totally tired. Today I finished mission seven and dreading 8. I love this game.

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of Ghost Recon :D

I'm working on Desert Siege right now, mission 4. I'm kind of procrastenating this one, because I very much hate these babysit missions, either tanks or convoys I really don't care for them. I much rather just sneak in, search and destroy. Oh well ... I'm playing on vet atm. I haven't tried elite yet, but I fear thats a setting which will be waaaay over my head. Vet is challenging enough for me as it is. I started desert siege on recruit but found it too easy (guess I learned a few things doing the original). In fact, it wasn't until the 2nd mission that I forgot to update the stats

I also have been a bit distracted because right now I'm also redoing SoAF on vet/med setting, so I'm playing that as well.

(and many other games).

 That's 1 minute and 30 seconds (approx.) better than I did on my first attempt... All 6 guys dead in less than 30 seconds

Yep. That's exactly my experience. I'm walking in crouch mode, looking around and "thud" I'm dead. Restart...crouch...."thud." What the hey? Finally, I notice this little dude way off in the distance sort of blending in with the scenery. Oh... why did I think the baddies would be easy to spot? Now that I've been playing, I guess I know what to look for because it seems easier to see the enemy. But, there's still plenty of "thud." :wall:

I love this game :rocky:

:o= Play it like your life depends on it. A lot of thinking, looking and marksmanship will get you through. Since there's no wussy med packs in this game you can't afford to slip up. Welcome to the wonderful world of GR and it's many great mods.

I replay a mission until I get it right. So if one guy dies, I'll restart. If one is wounded I'll restart. Only one time I didn't, but that was because it was the last mission on the last part and he would 'retire' after that anyway :)

tho all missions I have gone through with none of my members harmed. that's also how i play soaf (fail on team casualty)

Yes MsKitty babysit missions are kind of a drag for me too, any rushy mission is and this game is very unforgiving if you don't pay attention to details.

Have been trying to avoid using walkthroughs to create my own style of playing without the bias of other players plus some three days ago I downloaded SabreTeams and Frostbite mods to get more variety of skins and weapons (pity the original specialists are gone). I strart a brand new campaing using the Aussie/NZ ST operatives and everything goes A OK, great skins and weapons but missions are a bit harder with more tangos and more "thuds" than I remember from the original but that was ok with me...till I hit a rock. It was the bridge mission with the UN peacekeepers sieged in the building. Cleared the bridge an the crossroad and was slowly sneaking (as ussual) my way through to the buildings when a window pops open announcing the blue helmets have been eliminated and the mission has failed. I reload, try again and same results, reload try and rush the town and my dirty half dozen is bushwacked. Repeat, try diferent approaches with the same results.

It was very frustrating to be beaten by the clock ad decided to try another team and delete that campaing, went to main menu/campaings and was about to delete it when I noticed that instead of "recruit" the dificulty was set on "veteran" :stupid:

Man did I feel like an idiot! Had been playing a harder set of game and all the time I tought it was the mod the one to blame. :P

Anyway I'll use the walthrough now that am humbler and wiser.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Great game, and as KPR 56 said, great mods.

If one is wounded I'll restart.

Wow, I usually just kinda swap my guys out for a mission if they're wounded. Purple hearts are kinda cool, specially when you got a guy with like 2 bronze stars, a silver star, all 3 campaign missions and the CMH. (and with Ghost Recon's bullet physics, pretty hard to get a purple heart other than posthumuosly)

I beat all 3 campaings and I started working them through with Droopy's realism mod on... That's very interesting its a lot more team oriented (even in sp, you gotta manage your squads, not just run through with one sniper blasting everything). I remember once my brother and I played caves mission co-op like veteran or something and when we took out the camp site we just set up overlapping arcs of fire and picked every single rebel off without them getting near us. We beat that mission with two snipers, no respawns. Impossible? no. A tad unrealistic? yes. Basically the reason Ghost Recon has survived this long is because mods give it new life. I tried Frostbite but didn't really like it a whole lot for a few reasons (never got past the first mission, just the way some things in the mod were set up).

Hardest thing of all 3 campaigns was the extra objectives in IT, the ones like X. No Team Casualties. I love just thinking "hey this is going along pretty well..." and then you hear whizzzzzz smack as a bullet hits you and you fail the extra objective... lol back to the drawing board.

i once shot a guy in the hand with a pistol to get him a purple heart (he had all the other medals, i wanted a full set.)

I play similar to you although I don't restart if a guy is wounded, only if he is KIA. I normally leave wounded guys out for a mission or 2 and they always bounce back...

When I first began playing I found it very hard to complete a mission without any friendly casualties. I would constantly quick save and quick load the missions and would never dare play with the threat indicator off. Now I play without the threat indicator and without saving/loading mid-mission. :D

since i usually have the same guys with me, its kinda annoying if one gets hurt and starts to limp on the next mission. I could swap it with another guy, but then the lesser skilled will kind of pull down overal performance. Its kind of like being with a squad of vets and suddenly one vet is replaced with a rookie.

dunno. doesn't do well for morale I'd say

i know i know, its just a game hehe, i guess i just get too much into it and really want to have them go through it in one piece. If they really were part of your team you wouldn't want them to get hurt either, would you? i don't really care for the medals tho.

i don't think i could ever play it without a save tho, that would be too frustrating for me. I like to be able to retrace my steps and try from there, and if the plan realy is faulty to just start over.

By far the best and only way you should play this game. The threat indicator really takes away to much of the tension this game can give when it's turned on. :o=

Playing the castle mission I had 4 of my 6 riflemen wounded by the time i made it out (no actual losses) but then for the next mission i had to really scrap through all my guys and figure out who i could use cuz i only had 2 healthy riflemen.

ah the Quick Death! I'm prone, scanning the terrain with scope or binocs, my team is settled in the bushes near me or I'm alone, other teams are near or doing the same in other places, then - man down! thwack thwack! New name! Man down man down! Thwack thwack! BOOM! As they say in Far Cry - Where is he???? What the hell???? All soldiers dead. Mission Failed! I lasted 30 seconds or so my first time, ok so I'll send some guys here on this command map, there they go - who killed em? Who is killing me??? Jeez.

Now I'm the Pred, I kill and take trophies, I set traps, or flank positions, and sometimes I get cocky and Thwack! New name. BOOM! team dead, flank exposed, cover blown, blah blah.

It does not matter to me how you play this game, just play it and every now and then it will play you.

Glad to see folks are still buying Ghost Recon and loving it. Welcome to those who are new. Keep playing, keep GR alive.
