question about "darkmap" files

Recommended Posts

Sure no problem, youll have some kind of crazy shadow funhouse.

I think you misunderstand how the darkmaps work. When you view a darkmap .rsb you see lots of little triangles for the most part. These are the shadow textures for each triangle(face) of geometry within the map. The map contains data to take each of these little patches of dark or light or blue or red or whatever color and draw them over the textures that are mapped on your map geometry. This gives the effect of having shaded and shadowed areas thoughout your map. Unless you can line them all up to exactly where they need to be, its not going to be even close. You can of course change the colors, brightness, etc of the darkmaps. This is part of the method for creating somewhat convincing retextures of stock maps. If you want a map brighter, make the shadows brighter, if you want it darker, make the shadows darker. It follows a pattern of common sense once you have a bit of an understanding as to how it works. But just swapping out darkmaps from one map with those of another is the same as randomly swapping out textures from one map to another. Its going to look crazy.

o.k. thanks,

I guess I'll just have to keep messing with it til it works. What I am basically trying to do is the same thing that was done in the Black Hawk Down mod with Vilnius only give it more defined shadows.

thanks
