While GR will run on what you have, I recommend installing a bigger video card (64MB at least) and a sound card. The sound card will help free up CPU cycles even if you do not output the sound anywhere. The bigger vid card will process more too.

That was mine whitenight. I found that a bigger video card (at least 64mb) increases server stability. i was running a 32mb geforce 256 and increasing to a geforce 4mx 64mb increased stability and overall performance. I am also using an off board sound card, soundblaster pci 16mb. Ram helps also, I have 640 in my dedicated 2003 server and bandiwidth on the upload always helps. Also 56kers can cause instability when mixed with broadband, especially on missions.

Your server is fine. Even the video card, because in Dedicated mode, you do not use the video or sound.

Now lets talk about the real issues with running dedicated servers...

BANDWIDTH

you will need about 15-30Kbs for each player you have.

So if you have the options set to 11 players, 1 being the server, you will need about 150-300 Kbs upload speed...

This usually costs more from DSL providers as the low end is about 128Kup and 1Meg down.

CABLE....Dont even go there! Although cable modems are good for Edonkey and Kazaar....they suck at providing quality of service for real time gaming. THEY ARE SHARED BANDWIDTH. You are given 1.5 meg up and down on average over a period of hours. You need it now! I want my man to duck and cover, not skip to the edge of the map. Dont take me wrong. CABLE is better than dialup, but I prefer a DS3

Bottom line...Cable will work ok as long as your neighbors are not downloading their porn from edonky while you are trying to run the game.

Your hardware is fine. I ran a server for a year on a 900mhz with 512m with a 768/768 dsl which was more like 568/380 when I checked. I rarely had any regulars complain about lag. The 56K people from UBI would always lag us down.

Good luck...if you have any question just email me at ColBlackHawk@yahoo.com

for real the better video card did help it, and btw without a sound card of some-sort the gr server will not run.... At least on my 2003 server it wouldn't and you have to turn video acceration on under the properties for the video card or it goes right to the desktop, so even though you don't see/hear it, it does run video, and sound. Hence you can get those nice record games.

Does any of you guys know how to start a dedi without graphics?

Unlike some other games with dedicated server support built-in from the ground up, dedicated server support was tacked onto the GR engine late in its development. So it is impossible to have a dedicated server without graphics hardware for running GR. :(

You need a minimum of a 16MB DirectX 8.0 compatible 3D card.
