I have a 9800xt. I figured out that I am running on cat version 3.7, circa 9/4/03. Anyway, I noticed cat 3.8, circa 10/8/03, has a boatload of new features. The biggest one being ATI'S Overdrive function. My question is this: do I need to install every cat update since 3.7, or can I install cat 4.2 and that will include all the updates since 3.7?..thanks.....

thanks.....you have been a huge help...... :thumbsup:Since I bought my 9800xt in early feb, I never dreamed the cats would be that old...I figured the 9800xt's would sell through the old cats and I would get a newer driver set with my board...oh well I should have not presumed

FYI, ATI currently tries to release a new Catalyst driver update every month. Most updates fix minor issues with game graphics, but occasionally some upgrades introduce new major features like the OverDrive function (which only the XT cards can use).

Whether you have an ATI or Nvidia card, if the current verison of your driver is working perfectly with the games you play, I would suggest not to upgrade every time a new update is released. Why? Sometimes updates can introduce new bugs, especially if you have an older model card (e.g. Radeon 8500, GeForce 3) which sometimes may actually run better on an older version of the driver for certain games.

Only upgrade your driver if you are having problems with your card or certain games, or if you see in a review that a certain upgrade shows a substantial increase in performance.

Several gaming sites post regular reviews of driver updates. Eg. Firing Squad's latest driver reviews:

ATI - http://firingsquad.com/hardware/catalyst_4.2/
