Why make installers for mods anyway ?

I like to look inside and see what files are going to be installed and where. I love zip/rar/ace and self-executable's. Also it's mac-friendly.

I don't trust installers, maybe they make registry-entries... or add files to other folders then Ghost Recon/Mods. You never know.

That's my opinion.

But I admire the scripting skills DonMiguel !(even if it is a simple code). If I could do it I would make it so that for every file copied you need a confirmation. This way you see what files are going to be installed and where, and you can agree or not, same for deleting.

One question : is there a way to install mods wich have these launchers/installers without using the installer ? Just like zip-files ?

I thought Frostbite was the first mod for me that had one (an installer), I never clicked it, but still have the mod extracted. Can't remember...maybe totally different.

mac users get assed out again.

I recently converted to Mac and i was very happy with ability to play GR at all on it.

By buying a mac you should know the disadvantages of the platform. Dispite Apple would make believe, everyone know that the game community on it is very small. The figures that MovingUnit gave, 10-20%; are imo way to optimistic.

Id say be thanksfull to all the modders who does it in their free time and be very thankfull for those that made conversions in their extra free time.

Oh trust me i am thankful for the work I CAN PLAY.

I just have a problem with modders' making these installers that are incompatable. We get all hyped up reading about the new mods, than we find out we won't be able to run them cause they are "special", buzzkill. I didn't buy my Mac to play games on, but I am glad that it's an option for me. Maybe i should sell it and buy a couple PC's, and start making mods that are only mac friendly. lol jk. Why would i wanna perpetuate the same logic.

Imagine if all the mac users did use the same logic as you about making installers for music files (yes all your music was created/engineered on a macintosh) so you could only listen on a mac. Man would that suck for you. YES I know, most mods/games are made on PC so i guess i will sit and wait quietly till it is industry standard for these new mods/games to be converted to mac, not. I have the right to voice my opinion on the matter, so I am. If I don't raise my voice, than no one will ever try and think of a solution. Hopefully i get my point, at least, heard.

All I am saying is, I think you are holding back your potential for this mod by making it incompatable for other systems. So as long as you keep making installers for mods incompatable for macs, i will continue bitching that they are incompatable. Cause and effect, supply and demand.

I think there's some confusion as to what the app was. It wasn't an installer. It was a pre-GR launch application that allows customization of the mod before GR runs. An example of these would be War of Infamy, Frostbite, Sabre Teams, CdnOps2. These allow modders to extend the normal abilities of GR for team selection, setups, missions, server creation or client connection, ect. It's this kind of app that is in question. The specific app is a tool called GR Launcher (see my sig) that allows other modders to have a generic launcher utility that ensures DS/IT is enabled to minimize support, allows expansions or add-ons to their mod to be activated if found and gives the mod a graphical start so it feels more like the mod and less like GR. Its this tool that this thread was started over.

Hope that helps clarify for readers what the discussion is about.

Para, a better way to treat someone of this persons stature, is ignore him.

best way to go about it, just dont even respond to ranting like that, because you kow he will respond, and things will go down hill from there, as they always have with debates like this.

Macs are able to play three of the stated 4 mods(Forstbite, War of Infamy and Sabre Teams)

explain to me why Dynacomp can't, eerrrr won't be convertable.

But WHO the HELL do you think you ARE!!?? Who gave you the right to play GHOSTRECONGOD???

Who am I, I am the tool creator and can require an End User License Agreement if I so choose. I'm not playing any such thing. Its not like this tool is being forcefully distributed by me to the GR community. A modder that wants to use this tool can IF THEY SO CHOOSE. However, part of using MY tool is that they must agree to MY EULA. Don't like the EULA, don't use the tool. The modders that do have their own responsibility to inform their audience of the restriction, not mine.

did you ever ask redstorm for permission to mod gr??

For this tool, I didn't need anyones permission to begin with. It is a free standing tool programmed by me without any RSE content what-so-ever. I could in fact create an income of this tool if I chose to because it is the sole property of ME, just like any tool/launcher I've created.

As far as jealousy of DA, hardly. He can keep his download counts. Having 50,000 downloads of a mod filled with content made by other people is no bragging right except to those who desperately need attention and a following. I've said it before, I couldn't care if 1 person downloads my work because I did it for myself and friends and peers that I respect. It just so happens that my projects have the 50,000+ downloads, and I am honored by each one.

The plain truth is DA is jealous of legit, original modders like myself, BJB, El Oso, DRAG, Harntrox, Para, Earl, Thumper, Yodasplat, Mike Schell, Monolith, Jack57, Rebar, Wolfsong, Mamon, Mr.Pibb, Aus_Viper, and this list goes on and on. We've accomplished what DA and folks like him never will, and we've done it from our own hardwork and creativity.

Our mod is depentant on our external utilities for various functions. I'm just not at liberty right now to say why or how. As I said, the mod could be converted, but, because we need our external utilities, the mod would have to be altered, and you'd get a watered-down version.

That's enough from you, sir. If you'd like to harp on us and our mod, come to our site, www.dynacomp-mod.com. Leave this issue alone here, and move on. Rocky and his staff have had more than enough trouble in the last 24 hours, and it's due mostly to the propogation of a falsehood, which is what you seem to be doing all over again. How many times can it be said? DonMiguel's application is incapable of doing what lexsis said it does. DYNACOMP's launcher will not delete anything from anyone's hard drive.
