Making my first mod

I'm making my first mod and I want too use guns from other mods and then change the zoom and other stuff, but I dunno which files to transfer too my mod.

I transfered the files from the directories equip, kits, sound, shell/art/kits, model and textures too my mod directories and I added the correct strings file.

But when I activate my mod and I want to try to play a mission with the guns in my mod they dont show up when I'm choosing a kit. The kits are added to the list but the soldier isn't holding a gun and the pics in the lower right corner aren't there.

What did I do wrong??

Hi thug ;)

If as Ryan243 says its for personal use then all is ok and there no need for permission as you not gonna pass it off as your own works.

I assume you have got all the relevant .rsb's, .qob's, .gun & .kit files from the mods you taking the guns from yeah m8???

Its a long and painstaking method which is best done 1 at a time or you may CTD if a single file is missed or msplaced.

Any more I can help with...e.g if a weapon you moving is one of mine - i'll tell you the files required......just holla dude

Just to confirm the obvious: you have your mod activated and all the files you referenced are in that directory tree rather than under origmiss or anything else?

That would seem to indicate it's finding the .kit and .gun files, but not the .qob model file specified in the .gun file (missing .gun files seem invariably to cause a CTD). Open up the relevant .gun file in /equip and check that the file named in the <ModelFileName> tag is present in the /model directory.

and the pics in the lower right corner aren't there.

Open the .kit files and check that the file named in the <KitTexture> tag is present in shell/art/kits.

I am using the guns from other mods as a learning process because I want to see how the changes that I make to the guns affect the gun while I'm playing and not mess up the guns from the mods where I got them from.

Eventually I'm gonna try to make my own guns, but I'm just beginning at this so I'm taking it one step at a time.

I checked the files and everything seems to be in order, all the files are in the right directory and the entries in the .gun and .kit files seem to match, but I still dont see the guns when I want to select them.

So if someone could help me with that I would appreciate it very much.

Are you trying to select them in multiplayer or single.

You need the .gun files in the Gun folder.

.kit and have folders in the kit folder names rifleman,demolitions,heavy-weapons,and sniper.Put the .kit files in each one.

You then need the strings.txt if you want to see the name.

Then the texture.

Last is Sound.

The go in igor and reconcile the sound and set the rolloff or over(forget which one its called)and set that for silenced its about 15-20.nonsd is either 100-150.

that should be it..for single player..

also if you want to make your guns youll need a program called 3ds Max

you can go to www.discreet.com.It cost retail at like 3000(i think) or you can get student discounts for 500 or 1000(these prices might be wrong havent checked in along time).

Hey there Thug, I also have a personal MOD and I experienced all the frustrations your having now. Try opening an .atr file, look for the kitpath, maybe some of your soldiers still use the GR kits. What i do is adjust kitpath ex.<KitPath>hero\buzz_gordon</KitPath> That way if a regular soldier has this in his kitpath, he will surely have the guns Buzz uses. :P

If your using combos with IGOR, expect the icons to be jumbled at times or remain blank(white) :(

Try cutting and pasting the name of another .qob file from the /model directory into the .gun file just to see what happens. I just traced one similar problem to an extra underscore in a model filename and another to the wrong .gun file named in a .kit file. If that doesn't work, try one of the models in the origmiss/model directory to see if that will show up.

As a further question, do you have the mods these files originated in still active? If you do, make sure your mod is the highest priority (otherwise what you are seeing could be an error in the original mod). If you don't, then try activating them just to see if anything appears.

Unconnected to the problem at hand, but it may be worth pointing out that the kits can go in folders of any name, what matters is that the <KitPath> in the .atr file matches. You can even mod the original GR .atr files to look in different paths.

Thnx for your help, the guns finally show up when I'm trying to select them. :D

Now I got another question to DarkAngel and DRAG.

Can I use stuff from your mods (DA4.9 and HX5) for my own mod if I'm gonna release it??

And can I change model names from the guns??

If someone knows them could U let them know about this topic.

DA has a pretty long list of mods he used in the readme.txt of the mod .... if u go and download the mods he used and then ask the original modders im sure most wont mind... just make sure you ask every one.

I now know that the stuff DA used in his mod isn't his own, but I like the guns from that mod and thats why I will be posting another topic which states the guns I used from the mod DA4.9 so u guys can help me find out whoever made those guns so I can ask them if I can use they're guns :o=:D

Also Para when will the mod Dynacomp come out cuz I would love to see it.

I believe that DA included a list of most of the contributors in his readme file. <_< As for DYNACOMP, that's tough to say. I try not to make any statements abou release dates, because alot can change between now and the release.
