Rocky 1,224
Okay I don't want to sound stupid - but why does MS have two messengers, and why do they look so much alike, and do they share the same contact list? It's confusing the hell out of me. I was always being told to upgrade MSN messenger to the latest version, I checked the version number, and I was up to date! Then I realised I was checking windows messenger not MSN messenger. Why, why, why???
Avey 0
Windows Messenger is just a blag, plain and simple. It just annoyed me. Your best bet is to kill it off. Ways to kill Messenger
snakebite1967 0
having windows messenger enabled allows popups to be sent to your pc, its somthing microsoft left in but its easily disabled in xp
Ruin 17
Lol, you guys are thinking of the wrong messenger. Windows messenger is an alternative for people on 56K woh don't want to download and update MSN Messenger. Same idea, and share very similar features... MSN has more though (backgrounds etc). Common programs, used for the same thing, but one is the lite version of the other.
Rocky 1,224
Common programs, used for the same thing, but one is the lite version of the other. Aha, I see. Well almost, I still don't know my MS don't just have MSN messenger and ditch the other one then. I mean they both have similar sys tray icons and everything. Youcan even fire them both up at the same time, but it will log you out of the one that is running first... To me, it's crazy.
Ruin 17
Yeah, it's close to pointless. I dunno why they do it. But you can use both to run two different accounts. Up to you with what to do with it, obviously. I have Windows set never to load unless I want it to.

Yeah but the version that shipped with my xp is out of date and you cant use it with out updating, so i got MSN6.1 and killed Windows Messanger by opening the file in program files and deleting as much as i could. That got rid of it
Dan 0
Yeah, widows messagner comes with windows, but when u download the new version (i think it is up to 6.1) it deativates the standard one, so 6.1 will be in the system tray. But if you exit it for some reason, and try to get back into throught the task bar, make sure you pick the right one
Specter 0
Windows Messenger is an older version of MSN Messenger that MSN gave to Microsoft to include with Windows. MSN Messenger is the current messaging client in use by MSN and for availability. They do look alike because they are the same program, but one came with Windows XP and MSN explorer as givens with the OS.

You don't really need that .exe to do that. It can be set in Messenger under Tools, and Options under the General Tab. You have to remember that most programs can be configured themselves and don't need extra .exe's to be loaded on your PC. THey just use space on your drive.
Crimson 0
Trust me, I've tried configuring it to my preferance, but it doesn't last. Edit - And that extra .exe loaded up onto my hard drive takes up 28KB... well worth it. Edited February 16, 2004 by Crimson

I wouldn't know this except that I worked for them. MSN is it's own company actually. Owned by Bill, yes, but a seperate entity. MSN is not run by Microsoft. MS is just an affiliate and financial partner.
