Ruin 17
PCZONE.CO.UK 15:55: Crytek's hotly anticipated PC first-person shooter will only be released on DVD format, Ubisoft has confirmed with us today. It's a huge departure from the norm, and it also makes Ubisoft the first publisher - as far as we're aware - to turn its back on releasing a major PC title on multiple CDs. Far Cry is shaping up to be a must-have, must-play first-person shooter; but we get the funny feeling that FPS fans without a DVD-ROM won't be too chuffed with Ubisoft's decision. Whether or not those in such a situation will be prepared to add a new drive to their setup to play Crytek's game remains to be seen. What the crap is that... I now have to buy a DVD reader to play this...
Dannik 43
Don't worry, Ruin. So now you know. Ok, seriously... Nextgaming.de is noting that (in rough translation of the above) Europe gets the DVD version, and North America gets multiple CD's.
Dick Splash 23
What the crap is that... I now have to buy a DVD reader to play this... .......and there's me thinking that I'm struggling with a nearly four year old graphics card and a nearly two year old P4 1.6. I feel a lot better now knowing I have something that somebody else doesn't have. No offence Ruin DS
Ruin 17
Phew... That's good to know.
Crimson 0
Dang! This probably would've made me buy a Lite-On combo drive I've been looking at.
snakebite1967 0
lots of new games including UT2004 will have the option of shipping on dvd roms and it makes sense a game that fits on 6 cd's will fit on 2 dvd roms, i expect as games get larger and more complex that this will be the norm Edited February 13, 2004 by snakebite1967
Parabellum 12
IIRC, I got Splinter Cell on DVD.
Crimson 0
IIRC, I got Splinter Cell on DVD. Where at? I have three CD's. I'm glad UBI is starting the move to DVD's... and hopefully, MS moves into that direction with their FlightSim series, as four disc's for FS2004 is just wrong.
Dannik 43
Ubisoft has been DVD friendly for a while, although retailers aren't exactly keeping up. I don't know what the first game they sold on DVD was, but the Myst 3-in-1 edition currently on the shelves is DVD based. I feel for the CD-ROM users out there, of course, but considering how inexpensive a DVD drive has been for a couple of years at least, it's time for the mainstream to accept (if not adopt) a new format for games. I know more money is the evil thing, but you wouldn't have an Athlon/P4 if that wasn't what was required... right?... I don't want game companies to abandon CD's... just take into account that a significant number of gamers do have DVD drives. I won't begin to guess the ratio (poll, anyone?), but a lot do, and appreciate the option of using a high-content medium, instead of a bunch of disks. Knights of the Old Republic was 4 CD's. How I would have loved the OPTION of a DVD version. CD-ROMS are unfortunately old tech. They may still do the job, just like your 3dfx card still works, or your SD-RAM is good enough. It's not called legacy hardware for no reason. Nobody should be forced to upgrade, but as time goes by, we all buy newer, faster video cards, right? Moore's Law. You don't need the top level hardware, but it's not reasonable to hold on to tech a few years old, in the same reasoning. CD's just don't cut it. You don't have to be bleeding edge to realize this. Like it or not, the tech train is leaving the station. I hope I can keep up. -end rant.

Dannik 43
By the way, I found confirmation today from an Ubisoft rep that Far Cry will be a 5 CD release in North America. I'd really love the option of DVD.

Parabellum 12
Five CD's??? The game must be a 2 gig installation!
Super-Bob 0
Five CD's??? The game must be a 2 gig installation! 2 gig installations fit on 3 CDs maybe 2, I would say somewhere around 4 gigs.
