Okay, I have a question for you fellow skin/character modders out there.

I have been asked to modify a character model. Now I have modified skins, changed characters, and even done some custom models before, but this issue has me confused. The problem is the model has already been modified and is not in a *.3ds format. Its in a *.chr format. When I click "open" in 3DSM it lists the file types as *.max, *.chr indicating that I should be able to open the character file, but if I try to open it I receive an error message saying "open failed" . Should I be able to open this type of file in 3DSM? If its not possible to open the file is a conversion tool out somewhere that can help me out. Any light someone could shine on the issue would be great.

Thanks,

=UE=Cush1

No you can't open .chr files in 3DSM. The only way is to get the original file of the maker, which I'm guessing is SOTO. ;)

There is a conversion tool but it hasn't (and probably never will) been released.

not sure exactly what you are trying to achieve, but there is a rather nifty utility by baja bravo, or mike schell that allows you to open chr files and edit them....think it is in the recon section of this site....

try throwing character chooser utility into a search engine...

its a great wee program

@Cush, if it's a stock model, there are .3ds files you can download somewhere.

IF it's not, then you can try to contact the original maker for the MAX file, but ten to one says he wont hand it over.

There is no utility that can open GR CHRs (CHR is a format for Character Studios, which is why you can see the file type under "Open"). There is no utility that can Convert GR CHRs to 3DS either. Sorry

@TS, the one you're thinking of is called "Mike Schell's Skinner" and that can only change what textures a CHR file looks for (instead of using a Hex Editor - back in the old school GR Skinning days). It wont do anything to the actual model or to the skins.

That program can be found in the Recon section, and you'll want the v1.1 patch as well.

If its what i think it is he is doing some work for SOTO (adding a ghille to a character) for their mod. ;)

A conversion tool was made by Mike Schell but will never be released to the public. So many models would get ripped if that was the case.
