deleyt 0
Anyone that previously had ideas about modeling but simply couldn't affort an expensive package like 3D Studio Max, now have a chance to get stuck right in there.... Discreet (the developer of 3DSM) has decided to release a Lite-version of 3DSM and it's even free of charge. The package is called GMAX v1.2 and is basically developed for the gaming industry. It even comes with a well-documented helpfile, a tutorial and some example projects with textures to get you started. Only requirement you need for the package to run it, is to fill in their registration-form as it will send you a password to unlock the software. There are two downsides though: - the existing map-editor plugins that come with GR are not compatible and won't work. - The render-engine has been taken out. Still, anybody who wants to start and learn 3D modelling but didn't have the funds to buy such a package before, this might be just for you.
Recon 0
- the existing map-editor plugins that come with GR are not compatible and won't work. So it can't be used to make anything for GR? Is it possible for someone to make a GR plugin for this free version?

Without the plugin use or the rendering engine, that seems basically useless.
H-Hour 0
I think deleyt's post was directed at people interested in honing their 3D skills without the need for expensive software. In which case it's not at all useless.

deleyt 0
Right now, it might be only valuable to people that really want to learn 3D modelling with 3DSM's interface. BUT: In case you didn't follow the link and read it's content, GMAX is going to be supported for games directly and will add a whole new dimension to modding. The idea is that GMAX is implemented into an existing game or one in development and the data (like a mod) is gathered into a "game pack" and can be imported and exported between GMAX and the game. Some are already supported like Unreal Tournament, C&C Renegade, MS Flightsim as it seems (not sure). In theory this means you can mod in a way that has never been possible before: WYSIWYG for modders!. Model it in GMAX > Export it from within GMAX to the game > start the game > Play it! No more 3rd party editors or plugins. This is compatibility at it's best gentlemen. If you support this idea and you want Ghost Recon to be set up with GMAX, then go to their website and fill in their Game Request Form. If enough people request Ghost Recon to be added to GMAX, they could decide to implement it and that may open up a new chapter for GR for anybody that wanted to mod before but didn't have the software or funds. Seeing the light now?
Dannik 43
I wouldn't cross my fingers that RSE/Ubi would ever pay for the licensing fees required for GMAX support. Back when GR was first released, and the Stelmacks actually stopped by to talk to forum goers, I inquired as to why there's a 3dsm plugin but no GMAX support. I was told by one of the development team (albeit I don't recall exactly who) that the license fee to allow GMAX support was something akin to the entire development costs of Ghost Recon itself, effectively doubling the cost to make the game in the first place. RSE didn't to have to table that kind of expense.

H-Hour 0
GR 1 may be out for GMax. But not necessarily GR 2.
