Hello all,

i was using my pc earlier on this evening and while ending a program using task manager, it was taking too long, so me in my infinite wisdom :stupid: decided to just hold the power button and restart it again.

upon the restart, it took me to a black screen with a bunch of restart options: safe mode, last known good..., and start windows normally. i tried all of them with the same result...nothing..just a totally blank screen and no hard drive activity.

one of my bro's buddies suggested that i do a non-destructive sys recovery. i was able to go through the process of recovery..and at the end of it, a box came up saying the button to restart the computer in the user partition, did that and nothing happened.

is there a fix? i was thinking about a full (destructive) system recovery, but i need all my files and assignments, plus to top it all off i have Grand Rounds this week and all my research data and prelim powerpoint is on the hd.

EDIT: if the whole slave hd thing works tomorrow..can i reinstall this hd back and do a full (destructive) system recovery?

Thanks,

Aggressor

I can't recall the command to perform an MBR fix, but frankly it likely won't help.

If you have no HD activity from a repair, and the boot options don't do anything, I suspect your platters may have been corrupted. <shudder>

If you reinstall Windows over the existing install (as opposed to a repair) it will wipe your registry, but leave the files intact.

Alternately, pull the drive and take it to someone else's place, plug it in as an "extra" drive, and recover all your mission-criticals.

Don't do anything right away, if you can, and wait to see alternate suggestions. I give my options unfortunately because two weeks ago I managed to corrupt my HD and had to play "recovery".

Thanks Dannik for the reply :)

at least i can still mug my bro's pc and my little sis's new p4 laptop  so i'm not totally screwed in terms of not having a pc to use..i hope i can get all my data recovered and onto a cdrom

i'm trying to get to sleep but i'm worried so i've been looking at new hard drives.

my old maxtor 40 gb is Fast ATA/Enhanced IDE and has ATA 100 data transfer rate and 2MB cache, 5400 rpm. when looking for a new hd..should it also be similar to my old one in terms of the ATA/IDE stuff..also what about the rpm..will that be a major draw on my psu? i was thinking of getting a 120gb 7200rpm ATA100 Seagate OEM from tigerdirect.ca for $141.00 CDN, they also have an identical spec Western Digital for the same price.

also windows xp is on a partition on my old hd instead of being on a CD..is it possible to transfer that onto the new hd or will i have to use the old one as the master? not too sure how that would work with the 200 watt psu and all that i have on there.

sorry for the long post..i'm just anxious and my mind is racing and i just want to explore other possibilities.

EDIT: Looks like its gonna be the 80GB Seagate

Thanks,

Aggressor
