Harrm
Whats the difference between Black Ops. and Spec. Ops? I asked some army friends this question, but even they didnt know. Are they the same thing? --Harrm
Dannik
AFAIK, Spec Ops are the military extreme specialists, working as a legitimate if quiet branch of military operations. They are highly trained experts in warfare, from the blatant to the quite. Black Ops are those who operate outside of the "legal" structure, violating the law(s) of their nation and international treaty to achieve a goal that is presumably superior to the alternative. Spec Ops are "legal" experts in warfare, while Black Ops are charged with "the ends justify the means".
xG5kdo
Spec.Ops: Special Operations. Strictly in the military, this denotes any operations taken by special units in the military that falls outside of "conventional" military operations. Special Operations also exists within Police Departments, etc. Black. Ops: Old term. I don't think this is ever used anymore. Usually involves operations that are/were 'illegal' in the eyes of International Laws. Can be taken by the military, para-military forces, and/or intelligence agencies. Not always combative in nature. For instance, sending in 'illegals' (U.S. jargon: NOC agent-Non Official Cover) could be considered a 'Black Op.' Also called "Black Bag Operations". As I said, this term is an anachronism. Never used anymore. This term is NOT similar with 'Wet Works'. Out.
Ruin
Yeah, AFAIK they're both right: Special Ops = Special Forces, highly trained soldiers. Baclk Ops = Covert Ops. Done in complete secrecy. Usually, but not always, violates some kind of law - which is why it's so confidential. For example, Navy SeALs are Spec Ops... CIA NOCs (Non-Official Cover officers) are Black Ops. If your identity is discovered as a NOC, you're on your own.

deathmonger338
One of my Uncles was a CIA "plumber" (NOC). He worked in Cambodia and possibly N. Vietnam. I haven’t been able to get much else out of him, but I'm pretty sure he was directly connected to SOG. All he's really said about the matter was that when he volunteered for it, they told him that if he was ever captured or killed, the government would deny all knowledge of him, and his family would be lied to.
