UK to get new card paying system

Recommended Posts

Due to the fact that I work in retail, I have been able to obtain the following info for me fellow UK'ers (not it isn't info that is meant to be kept confidential).

Right, as from January 04, the UK will be changing to a new pay system that you see in many countries worldwide. Basicly, instead signinging for your transaction, you will have to enter your PIN code. It's just for extra security.

New cards will be sent to customers (from their banks) for this new system. The new cards actually look like the present cards (the one with the gold square on the right hand side). Your banks will tell you about this system. Some banks have already sent out these new cards (we have had customers use these cards where I work)....The banks that have started telling their customers and sending new cards are:

- Lloyds TSB (gold card, silver card, green and blue card)

- Barclays (their new purple and blue card)

- HSBC (white and red card)

Other banks are yet to follow. Although we have been using the system already (customers have used these cards already), the system aint fully operational yet.

The new system will be the standard by January 04. The retail outlets are just waiting for the go ahead from alll banks.

Some of you might know this already....

Yeah, we've had this in our post offices for the last year I think. In fact, I don't like the idea. Heard of shoulder surfers? Well that crime will go up about 500% if you are entering a pin every shop you use your card in. At the moment you only enter the pin in at the cash point. All the criminal has to do is take your wallet as you go out of the shop.

Its called EFTPOS, we have it in Aus, you swipe the card through a hand held reader, and type in the PIN. It uses a phone line to the bank.

They always screw up though, very temperamental.

Shoulder surfers will be a problem, but you can always face away from the queue of customers.....

As usual, the UK are the last to get this system. I know France had it like 10 years ago....
