Hi,

I have played GR on the xBox before. I just bought a new laptop and was thinking about buying GR (for the PC) to play on it. I am a total newbie to pc gaming though. As of right now, I've only ever played solitaire and Minesweeper on computers ;). A guy I work with said that laptops aren't as good as Desktops to play video games on (the same specs on a laptop isn't as fast as a desktop with the same specs.) I bought a pretty good laptop but am not sure if it is good enough to play pc games online without lagging and the video card not being good enough.

The laptop's specs are:

-Mobile Pentium®4 Processor,2.2 GHz,15.4 WSXGA+

-512MB,DDR,266MHz 2 Dimms

-60GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive

-64MB DDR NVIDIA® GeForce™ 4 4200 Go AGP 4X Graphics

Is this good enough if it's on a laptop? If so, what else do I need to buy (other than the game) to play on the laptop and online? Do I need to buy a controller or headset like the xbox has?

Also, does it cost anything to play online (like how I'm charged yearly for xbox live)?

Thanks in advance!

To play online you need an internet service :P..... if you want to use voice comms you have to use a 3rd party program..... ie Team Speak....The controls will be the Keyboard and touch pad... or ball thingamajig.... I'd suggest getting a mouse though as they are tough to play GR with.....from the system spec it looks like GR should run.. Ihave a laptop with alot less "power" than yours and it runs GR just fine.... you probably won't be able to run at max setting though. ;)

Hi NYR,

I have EarthLink DSL for internet service. What do you mean by probably not being able to run on max settings? Is that for the game? If so, is in regards to image quality?

I like the idea of being able to talk to people on a headset while playing (like when playing xbox live). How do most people play though? If I'm the only one with a headset, and everyone else can't hear because they are typing, i would probably just rather type.

Also, what are the "Mods" I see mentioned in the forum? Is that something I should/need to download when playing GR IT?

Thanks again!

Mkae sure you purchase the GR gold Editon... it comes with all 3 expansions... what I meant by max setting was Graphical Settings.... I have everything maxed out on my machine because it is powerful enough to do so....Your internet connection is fine.... ;) ....Depending on where you play there may or may not be a voice comms server runing as well..... what you can do is use a voice comms program (which is free) and just listen, them make your desicion to buy a mic..... I'd suggest just getting the game first play that then..... move on MODS (Modificatons).. these are the bread and butter of the PC Ghost recon.... they 3rd party "expansion" type things....some include new skins, maps, game types, missions etc.....

I have been playing on a laptop since the game came out. I have also upgraded to GR Gold. I never have had a problem. However I have the settings on pretty low. But to do over I would deffenetly purchase a desk top. I cant do any upgrating, other than memory. So next time I will definatly go for the desk top :thumbsup:

Welcome to the forums JellyTheory.

Your laptop raw specs will be enough to run Ghost Recon. The PC version has customizable levels for graphics preference and/or performance. If you had a slower system for instance, you could trade eye-candy for more frame rates. Since you have a better-than-average laptop, you can bump some of those settings for better visual quality.

There are quite a few options for Multi-Player capabilities too. You've got the UBISoft Gaming Lobby included with the game. There are also "aftermarket" options such as All Seeing Eye. Best of all, IMO, are games we members host, and quite often at that. You've got dedicated gamers here that want some serious coop action (or player vs. player), and won't hesitate to invite you in. Such Private IP games can be found in our very own Games Room.

For a fast moving game such as Ghost Recon, effective communication is necessity. While some players are content to type phrases to their teammates, alot of us want real-time tactical communication. This is done through software such as TeamSpeak. Simply grab a mic (or headset for hands-free), and you can talk to your mates in the heat of battle.

While GR is a great game, it can always be improved. That's what MODS are all about. MODS are "after-market" modifications and additions to Ghost Recon. They include additional weapon kits, skins and textures, to total conversions (such as a transformation from US Green Berets to Australian SAS). Most of these can be found in the Downloads Section of GhostRecon.Net, as well as these places:

GhostRecon Retreat

DamnR6

Rainbow6.org

Check out the General Mod Topics and Mod Reviews Forums for other great MODS.

I look forward to gaming with you sometime.

Regards,

Thanks for all of the replies and helpful information! I went to BestBuy, Circuit City, and a local GameStop to buy the game. But BB and CC don't carry the game for the PC anymore. And GameStop didn't have any instock. Does anyone have any ideas on where I can get one at a Brick & Mortar store? Like maybe a Target or CompUSA? I guess I'll just call around today to look for somewhere that still carries the game. :)

Thanks again!

I alsways played GR in a laptop and I don't want to try any desktop 'cause I'm scared of the results :P

Anyway some months ago I changed laptop to pass from 16MB video to 32MB shared and I've seen lots of improvements.

Then I installed other 256MB so I could take the video memory to 64MB

You can always find GR and it's expansion mods on Ebay pretty cheap. I've also seen it in stores like Gamestop and Electronics boutique in the used software sections. I Play GR on my laptop, but only when I'm travelling and I have to use it. Otherwise I much prefer playing it on my networked desktop at home.

Good Luck.. :)
