newbie modder needs help... please?

hi guys... this is my first time posting in the GR forums, but i have been following the forum for a long time alreadi and to all the great modders all there, THANKS! :rofl:

so anyway, i just sort of started trying out modelling and i got stuck at one fundamental... how do i apply textures in 3d smax 4? :wacko: nv seem to be able to find a tut or anithing on the net on that... and can't understand the bit about materials in the smax help file... help guys? :blink:

yeah i noe.. but hunting for a good webhost to place the files so i can get comments from the many experts out there :yes:

EDIT: just uploaded the stuff on to angelfire... tell mi wat u tink of this :devil: supposed to be the SAR21 assault rifle made by Singapore Technologies Kinetics... used by the Singapore Armed Forces

my render without textures... still trying to figure out how to add it...

That looks low polly already, but once you start modelling more detail you might want to try using the "n-gon" shape instead of the oval and cylinders. Cylinders have 20? sides or something like that. N-gon's can have as many sides as you want. About 5-8 is usually a good number. :)

I use cylinders instead of N-Gons as you simply add or reduce sides as you want and then they work the same.

:huh: ok. Listen to Wolfsong....he knows better than I do.

How do you add or reduce sides? Is it in the menu on the right?

Select your cylinder, go to "Modify" tab where u can change "Height segments" and "Sides" values and other things. :thumbsup:

haha thanks for the tips guys.. realli helpful :lol: thing is... i tink u guys can c that i did a boolean for most the bits, but after i do a boolean, i can't adjust the width etc. animore from the modify panel can i? the squash etc simply messes up the way it looks and isn't too precise...

sorry guys, i noe newbies are frustrating :stupid::P
