applying textures

i have watched pain's tut's on textureing and such but can't find the answer to my prob. is there a way to apply the texture to only one side. every time i try it wraps around and onto the other side. also, how so i get a texture on the top of the model.

Yes there is... UVW Unwrap is one... select the faces, go to UVW Unwrap and you will have the selected's Vertices UVW Coordinates, just move them or whatever.

The texture will still be present on the other faces. It simply won't be mapped the same on each face. Perhaps that's what he meant when he asked, but I understood him to mean having a texture applied strictly to one face.

There is a way to assign a texture on face without deteching face.If you convert your object to editable poly or mesh you can go to poly mod and select the face you want to texture than in Polygon properties select material ID let say (2) then of course you have to create a multi/sub. object material in mater. editor.If you do this way your object will be in one piece and leter on you can add meshsmooth to your object without deform his geometry. ;)
