Server Video Cards

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have and old system that I would like to make a Game Server. I know I will need to do some upgrades to make this possible, but would like to keep them to a minimum. My question is "what is the minimum size video card required for a server"? I think I'm alright with the other specs of the system.

They are as follows:

CPU - AMD Duron 750 Mhz

Ram - 512

Sound Card - Sound Blaster 64

Video Card - 8 Meg (IIRC, I know its not much bigger than 8 Meg)

Thanks for the help.

For the dedi, I believe it has to be 16MB to meet the minimum sys specs for GR.

Most servers that people use for dedi, that they pay for, have 32MB cards in them, as that is about the smallest video card you can buy now, at least new.

But I'm almost certain that even the dedi server MUST meet minimum requirements for the game to even start.

You will have to replace the video card. I would just get the cheapest one you can find. The rest of the system will do ok.

get a crappy 16mb/32mb card. Nothing exciting. Also make sure if that video card you are talking about (8mb) is disabled in BIOS (if onboard) and/or removed from the box before setting it up. The ram is fine and the processing will prolly let you run 20-25 players.

Any other QQ's?

@ Supa and Avey

I just thought having a common place for all team members to meet and practice would be nice. Besides my old systems that I have (seven total...I guess I'm a geek) are just sitting around collecting dust. As you know I try to make my main system available for hosting most weekend nights so guys can get some trigger time in together.....unfortionatly (sp) this does not workout well for my mates across the big pond, and that sucks :( . It is my hope that creating a dedi server will allow fellow team mates more oportunities to game together. Besides I'm paying for a cable connection I might as well make the most of it.

Right now it all stems on me being able to afford the small upgrades to make it happen. I'll try to keep you guys posted (in our forums) on the progress.
