anybody have a Radeon 9800 pro 128 meg card

Recommended Posts

i am awaiting my new Radeon 9800 pro 128 meg card, and was wondering if this card can handle all that GR has to throw at it? the specs looked really nice on this card, although not as nice as the 256 meg card, but oh well. i recently upgraded my card to a gefroce fx 5200 128 meg card, and wasn't impressed with it's performance at all. thanks in advance...

I know of one member of the forum who uses a 9800 pro, and I'm very close to getting one myself :rocky: ...... maybe he can tell you more....

By the way this should really be in the computer discussions forum..... but don't start a new thread there though wait for this one to be moved. ;)

I've had the 9800Pro since May - upgraded from a GF4 Ti4200. I'm extremely impressed with this card, dispite ATI's previous PR battles. nVidia's FX Series was originally my next upgrade from the GF4, but after reading review after review, from both customers and OC'ing communities, I wasn't all that impressed with the FX Series. Furthermore, the 9800Pro was actually my first ATI product, as I had been an nVidia fan from the beginning. To say the least, I've got a change of heart. :flowers:

Enough history. The 9800Pro is a very formitable card for modern DX8- and DX9-based games. It's got both brains and brawn. :P Alot of the previous 9x00 features have also been upgraded. I cannot compare apples to apples, as this is my first ATI card, but it can handle all GR throws at it. One thing that really stands out though is the texture quality. The Anti-Aliasing looks gorgeous! Let's just say your games look different at 6X AA and 16X AF. The ATI drivers also include an intuitive Control Panel that allows you to customize the texture levels to suit preference.

I usually run my games at 4X/4X, or 4X/8X. If you choose to turn off the image enhancements, you feel the true power of the R350. I once clocked over 367 FPS in GR, and over 700 during one of FutureMark's 3D Benchmarks. But since I am a man of quality, I'll run AA and AF near mid/high-mid, and still get great FPS. Remember, the average eye cannot notice the difference in FPS over 60.

One thing I must mention too: Overall system performance depends alot on the rest of your hardware too. If you're running a rig near minimum GR specs, a 9800 will not give you the full benefit of smooth gameplay. The key to a fast system, IMO, is balanced components. If you have a relatively fast processor, and a decent motherboard/memory combo, than you'll be set to "burn the competition".

Happy Fragging,

Dark Ranger,

thanks so much for the info on the 9800. i can't wait for the card to arrive. i used to be a big fan of Nvidia as well, and this will also be my first ATI product.

my sytem is running at 1ghz, and 512 rdram, so hopefully i should be good to go. i feel the video was really the only thing holding me back. GR is a hog on memory, and graphics.

my next step is to enter the GR world in 3-D. all of the reviews i have read on the Wireless E-D Glasses, have been very intriguing.

:D

Greetings fellow ghosts!

If you folks remember, I had an issue with my brand spanking new 9800pro right out of the box. I had all these texture issues, yellow dots everywhere, these yellow lines on the ground etc. Needless to say the end result was a one in a million bad card out of the box.

The only issue you'll run into when you get your card is...if you have an issue with your card. Customer service is.....lacking.

The card itself, however, lives up to its expectations and more. I've never had so much fun revisiting games I haven't played in a while just to see what they look like with everything cranked up.

The 9800pro can handle everything Ghost Recon can throw at it and then some...except 32bit z-buffer depth. The 9800pro does not support it stock, you'll need a tweaker and go messing around if you want it.

I run Ghost Recon on 1600x1200x32res, all graphic settings on the highest, and usually 4xAA and 16xAF. I experience ZERO slowdown in game performance. As Dark Ranger said though, you also need the system to back up the card. It would be like having '63 vette with a 427 under the hood but no steering wheel. ;)
