Delta Force: BHD

Recommended Posts

Gamespot gave it a 5.6 but I thought it was okay - if a a little hard and short. I played through the campaign on easy and it was still tough in many places but really only added up to about 6-8 hours of gameplay over a week.

Good:

-Gave me the old Delta Force feeling. Graphics, models and lighting are pretty (weapon models and uniforms ugly). Terrain has the same look as the old games (1&2, nit that Land warrior, Task Force Dagger crap), but naturally new and accelerated.

-Missions fun and not too time consuming

-fairly smart friendly AI, no need to give orders. They follow you around and give some backup. Can be useful at times unlike the old AI. At least you don't feel alone.

-Animation and ambient civilians - one of the coolest moments I have ever had in gaming occured here: In mission 2 an angry Somali threw what looked like a grenade at me as I passed him by in a filthy shanty town. I shot him dead only to discover he was just throwing rocks. I had just committed a real-world mistake in a game.

-Helo insertions and extractions. medevac for wounded and general sense that more is happening around you and you are not the center of the universe; calls to mind COD.

-Crocodiles

Bad:

-Some very linear missions like COD or MOHAA. Most other missions fairly linear. The old DF games let you run around the vast terrain, but here, you get cancelled for being off-task. Probably okay in MP.

-Short and short.

-Challenging, but not in a smart way: One mission forces you to run through a minefield and survival is trial and error. Difficulty in other missions seems to hinge on getting caught in firetraps. Turn left or right at the T-junction in the back alleys? Either way someone will shoot you in the back.

- AI stays too far behind to help much. They're also lousy shots. Some blue on blue incidents.

I still like it for a romp. It covers the Mogadishu battle well near the end - as well and tastefully as is possible without not doing it at all. This game had greater potential though, and should not have limited itself to the subject matter. This engine could have been used to revive the old DF style, this time with some vehicles and useful friendly AI, so there is a sense that there is a wasted opportunity. Perhaps the expansion willl hold more promise.

I have to admit that I tired of the SP game rather quickly so didn't get very far into it at all :(

We've played the MP game at my LAN club a fair bit though and it really is a blast. Going door gunner on the chopper is fun, although you are very vulnerable to rpg's
