AH1 Cobra

Have the Marines stopped using the Cobra helicopter, in particular its newest variant the AH1-W Whiskey Cobra? In an aviation brief in my Naval Science class I noticed that it was not mentioned amongst the aircraft in service with the Navy and Marine Corps, and it made me wonder if this was because it was no longer in use.

Just curious, but any light shed on this would be cool. Thanks.

yah, the Marines use them over the newer Army choppers becouse they take up much less deck-space. The new version is the AH-1Z Cobra and has a new avionics and TADS sysatem as well as more powerful turbofans and a 4 bladed folding main rotor.

okay, that is what I thought, I just thought it curious that my NS prof (he's a submariner) would leave that out. As it is, our MOI flew helos (MH-53's IIRC) before coming here to GTNROTC. I also had not heard of the Z variant, interesting. Anyway, thanks for answering my question.

I like the evolutionary concept of weapons development the US has perfected over the last 20 years... Almost every major system in the US military is 20 years old, and they're still all state of the art due to many improvement programs. Like the M60, M16... The Cobra, Huey, F-15, the damned B-52(!), Hercules... Incremental fine tuning is what makes the finest instruments of any art or science.
