I finally broke down and reformatted my computer. There's a lot of work to do, but already I feel better.

I just saw my connection speed skyrocket to 290KBS (as opposed to the 40-60 I was getting).

I now have 7 Partitions. One for XP, one for 98, one for Games, one for Apps, one for my family's docs, one for my docs, and one for Music and media.

Windows XP starts up and shutsdown in a matter of seconds.

Man, am I glad I did this.

Thanks to EVERYONE who helped me! This is great!

well i would format if i could  :wall: stupid HPs

Same here. I got a great price on an HP system at Best Buy but no OS cd. :wall: Those cheap @#$%&*#$

It's part of their deal with MS to cut down on Piracy. They store the OS and all restore files on a firmware chip on the mobo.

Yeah i just reformated to.... but i got cable @ just about 2mbps

But it was worth it.

Best advice to reformat... make sure u have drivers on disc or at least a internet connection.

Know your hardware too.

Gointo your bios and switching i think it primary boot one from HRD-DRV to CD-Rom .... or somthing ....

put windows cd in tray, Restart, and fallow instructions.

when your done formating and reinstalling windows and drivers make sure u change primary boot back to hrddrv ..... if u dont it just makes u wait a few seconds to give u a chance to press a key to boot from the cd.

That only works if you have the OS on CD or a restore CD. Most new off the shelf PC's come with everything on a firmware chip on the mobo now.

What the mfr's of these machines DONT tell you, is that you cant access it if you fdisk your hdd, and wipe out the partitions to make your own. There is a 7-11 MB service partition on them that is required to access that firmware chip.

So if you have an off the shelf machine, check before you make drastic changes and know your machine. If you dont know, and you dont have CD's for it, ask.
