Trouble with a pistol grip..

Recommended Posts

I am currently working on my first weapon model and want it to be a usable weapon in GR and that means a low poly count.

So far I have made the hammer, frame, and pistol grip of my revolver, but I ran into a snag with the pistol grip.

The revolver I'm modeling is a old style revolver with a nice curved wooden handle. I tried to recreate this feature but when I did my poly count jump from 100-200 to over 800 :(

What I did to create the pistol grip was outline it with the "Line" command. I then placed two more lines in the middle (under the same "line" group) and pulled them out to replicate the roundness of the pistol grip.

After I did this I connected the vertices and "surfaced" the pistol grip. I then mirrored that object connected them together. The pistol grip turned out very nice looking but heavy on the poly count.

I did this identicaly to the way its shown in the "Making a chess Knight" in the 3DSM 5 tutorials.

I'm wondering if there is a better way of doing this (making the pistol grip) that results in a lower poly count or any ways in Max to lower the poly count(some sort of compression program for example).

I'll take another look at the 3DSM tutorials but any help would be great.

Thanks, Swarm :)

I add more segments, under the extrude option. Then i edit mesh, and select only the points in the middle, drag hem out, from the top view, and it should be rounded. There is ABSOLUTLY nothing wrong, with 800 poly's, i might even say, thats not enough :rocky:

Thanks for the help Marcinko and Kpl.Eli. I wasn't sure about the max poly count for such a weapon but I didn't want to create a whole weapon just to find it un-usable :(

And I got the message Kpl.Eli
