    Advance is how they ai move when they are directed by a wavepoint, when set to advance the ai cotrolled fireteams advance to the specified location but if they run into enemies they will stop and hold postion and depending on your rule of engagement, Recon, Suppress of Assault they will take action accordingly. I suggest you rerun the part of training that explains the command map and issuing orders it will help you get used to setting wave points and directing your teams.

    You can also join servers by direct IP, take a looked at the pinned thread listing dedicated servers, you can find the IP's there. To find more servers availabe for you to play on, I would recomend getting Island Thunder( if you don't already have it as you mentioned only having Desert Siege)
