Not necassarily no..........
Norton can pick up some legitimate Scripts as potential viral activity. As an example for you my last AGP Card had an optional App you could install to O'Clock it called "SmartDoctor2". SmartDoctor was enabled to Start-Up at Boot and until I told Norton to ignore the App knowing that it was legit, it would flag a warning everytime. It may depend on exactly what the Script does and obviously how it does it into prompting Norton into thinking it may be a script making changes maliciously when it isn't!!!
Ultimately check out the Script it is Flagging for you and see what it is attached to or controlling, that way you'll find out if it is a legitimate Script or App and can tell Norton to ignore it completely, or if it is suspect then take steps to removing it etc!!!
Halting Scripting may also cause you a lot of problems with other Apps if you stop them running completely, it's often better to allow then to run but have Norton watch for potential malicious Scripts and Flag when any are found as you currently have it set up
!!!!!Hope that's of use to you

Bluerose may be referring to one of these......

I use one as I only need to split 1 lead for my Headphones on my Audigy will take a full 6 Speaker Set Compliment for example, but a lot of Soundcards won't so you may need the Multi-Splitter posted in another recent post on the same subject.
If you just need one extra Input then the above is spot on and will cost you nearer $3's

Thanx Dannik and now in further answer to ya question Phantom....
Yes Dannik, ya rite, it is a Modem Router Combi and thanx for the link, but I already had it hehe
!!!I had also already forwarded 5 DCC Ports (7 in total) after posting last nite too.
I forwarded 59 and 6667 to make sure that they weren't a factor in stopping sends being the IRC Server Port and default DCC Transfers Port etc, and then 3950-3955 for the actual DCC Sends themselves too, still with no joy. I have also correctly assigned myself an IP out of the usual range that the Router assigns for other LAN Workstations and entered that into each line in the Virtual Server connection for forwarding ports (yes, 1 line at a timetoo which is also a bit of a pain, but it wouldn't bother me at all if it bleeding worked lol)!!!
With no joy there I stuck the damn thing out on a DMZ to see if it would work there and still not a damn thing
!! Getting furious now lol, as I know mIRC itself is fine and I fully Scripted it myself and had it working fine before installing this Router.......I can see whats gonna have to happen.....The Retailer won't accept it back as there isn't anything wrong with the product, so that'll be £80's worth of kit that'll probably be ending up tosed in the damn spares cupboard and I'll have to get one that will work with IRC DCC's.......ARRRSSSSEEEEE!!!!!!

hehehe.........
BTW White Knight, if ya going for an FX5900 and ya like a lot of IL2 then you are gonna love it on the FX m8
!!!I rarely play IL2 these days admittedly, but I had to check it out to see how it was gonna look with the FX5600 and geeeees rofl, everything is completely maxxed out and it does look very good indeed
!!! Hopefully you'll be suitably impressed m8
!!!I've defected away from IL2 for a while tho hehehe. I'm back to playing Rowans BoB a lot again, and CFS2 (with Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and RAF Tornado addons in there)....
....A bit of CFS3 too, but of late mainly FS2002 (with the Battle of Britain and RAF Tornado addons chucked in there too lol). Also recently got Carrier Ops and Helicopter Ops addons for FS2002 as well lol. Dunno why but I've really got into flying Choppers again at the moment lol, great laugh, just brought SAR3 too, but yet to even install it LMAO, been too busy with all the others hehehe!!
You play any other Flight Sims than IL2 too WK?????????
Sorry if it seems like I hijacking ya thread Xian Saint, but as a Flight Sim was mentioned along with the FX AGP Cards it got my attention rofl, always wondered if any of the guys here were into Flight Sims as well as good old GR lol
!!!???!!!???!!!??? -
Heya Phantom,
Basically no m8
.......As said. the "Reading Up" I have done on the issue on the Web for more indepth information and even "Step by Step Guides" all seem to only use a D-Link Router as an example and no others that I have been able to locate either
..........Obviously the D-Link example has it's own Software for their Routers, which clearly differs from my Zoom X4 and any other Routers like a LinkSys etc as further example (who I have one of their Switching Hubs as it happens too lol ( a LimkSys I mean), but that needs no messin with lol)!!!
I do get the general idea of it all and I know that to set one Router up in the same manner is exactly the same principle for more or less all equivalent Routers, but that doesn't allow for the varying Software that controls the damn things lol. I fear my problem here is going to be finding out if anyone has had any direct experience with the Zoom X4 and had it working on mIRC fully for DCC Sends ultimately!! The main problem being from having the Zoom Software in front of me is that compared to examples of the D-Link I have seen on the Net is that I can only see a way of forwarding only 1 Port per Computer on my LAN and that to get round it I'll have to DMZ which frankly mIRC is the last App I'd want to DMZ too lol, but it may just be cos I'm not understanding the use of the Software correctly either rofl, and seeing as it is new to me there is a good chance of that till I gain experience with using them more again
!!!However, I may get lucky with the fact that a few of you guys on here know about this kind of thing very indepth and you may be able to offer further advise without having used one tho.....I can only hope on that one tho obviously lol
!!!!Am running short on hair left to pull from my head rofl!!!!

K.....
Router is doing absolutely fine other than I can't send files via DCC thru mIRC. I know mIRC very very well and write a lot of my own Scripts for it and I know that that isn't the problem. I'm also guessing that because mIRC's DCC function and the way it works was in use a while before UPnP was too, that I'll need to mess about either creating VP's or even putting mIRC out on a DMZ to get round the problem
!!!The DMZ basically is out of the question unless it's absolutely necassary, I may have to consider using DMZ for some Games etc, but no way for IRC for obvious reasons lol!!
Otherwise that leaves Virtual Ports or Port Forwarding. I've been reading up on it the last few days and have a general grasp of it (but for other Routers than the Zoom X4 I have), only the Zoom X4 works slightly differently and the Software is also obviously Zooms and is different to other brands etc too, as a lot of them clearly are, working in their own way set up differently by the various independent manufacturers.
Has anyone using this forum got a Zoom X4 or had experience with the Software to ehlp me out here please
!! I can receive fine which is fair enough, butI would like to be able to send again too
!!Any help appreciated

Heya Ruin,
Back to ya original problem m8 lol......Seems weird that an App would tell you it can't except TCP (or "Transmission Control Protocol" in full, which works hand in hand with IP to put it simply), especially as you have no Firewalls up, Software or Hardware, or are you actually using a Software Firewall that you've forgotten about cos it's not Hardware m8 lol????
Apps rarely do that unless there obviously is a problem somewhere with your PC, but with that being the case, you'd more likely be telling us that you can't connect to the Internet with a whole list of different Programs you have.
The other thing that may be an issue is because of the highly questionable nature of Apps like Kazza and WinMX (and obviously Napster before them) to those types out there with nothing better to do than complain about people sharing Files over the Internet and the Programs available to do that. Subsequently ISP's have started blocking the Ports that these Apps use as a measure to stop it going on:(, meaning obviously that Client side there is nothing you can do at all if the Port is blocked Remotely. I'm not saying it's the case for sure, but if all your other Programs work fine and that one isn't then it does tell a story. Contact your ISP and ask them if they Block any specific Ports on their Servers if you continue to struggle to find a solution and it will at least confirm the possibility for you etc!!
-
Thanx for the info again Phantom and also Dannik, I suspected the security issue wasn't relevant, but someone was telling me it was when I was saying it wasn't, and it was being disputed to the point of I had to check with someone else rofl!!!! Anyway........
Any of you guys ever use grc.com too (Shields Up)??
I use it a lot to check that my systems are reasonably secure when I make changes etc, and now with this new Router fitted when I logged on there too check the functionality of the new NAT working and when I initiate the "All Service Ports" Probe to make sure that they were either Closed as appropriate or Stealthed etc, I've found that they are now all simply Closed whereas before with Mcafee Firewall V4 alone, ALL of my Ports were succesfully Stealthed with the exception of 2.
I still have the same Software Firewall installed and intend to keep it that way anyway, but now it's changed when running the "All Service Ports" Probe and its showing that all of my Ports are Closed instead of Stealthed as they were with just that Software Firewall alone. Although it's still at least generally secure, it obviously means that Ports are now responding though, but albeit under a Port Probe reporting in simple terms, "We're all closed go away", instead of no response when they were Stealthed and basically reporting that "There is no Computer here"!!!
The Port Probe is also failing in one or two other areas too. It's now replying to Ping Requests which it also wasn't before and also Responding to "Solicited TCP Packets" which again although the Ports would still be closed, it still means the damn thing is responding which it wouldn't if they were Stealthed again instead. Even though Mcafee is still installed I guess the Router is obviously doing its work and bouncing everything back out before the Software Firewall has a chance to get into playing the game too lol!! Although not critical again, as even if someone has an IP to attack, the Router will help at least and at present my IP is also Dynamic too, so keeping my IP wouldn't do anyone any good to "Have a go another day either at least either rofl"!
On one obvious upside though, when just the Software Firewall was installed Pre-Router lol, whenever I initiated the grc.com Port Probes my Software Firewall always intercepted a SYN Port Scan Attack (which it should if working correctly obviously), but at least now the Router has been catching that again before the Software Firewall gets to deal with it instead, so the Router is working lol
!!!I have trawled thru every Set Up Option with the Routers Software and there isn't anything to effect changing it either unfortunately!!!
Annoying niggles over anything desperate but have you guys ever seen this beforewhen using your Routers etc and have any advise for once again Stealthing Ports on the NAT or is that simply the way it is please lol, (BTW, the Router is running in NAPT mode, if I set it to Disabled or NAT then the Connection goes down completely)????
-
I've had it for years too and also not had any problems on any of my comps past or present either
!!!How you configure ICQ for Privacy etc can be a move in the right direction to help in stopping you at least "advertising" your presence so highly to the entire world when you log onto it however. Set it up so that only people added to your contact list can see you when you are using ICQ if you default to the normal "Available/Connect" Mode etc, obviously if you use the "Privacy (Invisible) Mode" options (as I do personally). Then you have even greater control over adding "personaly trusted freinds" to that list to differentiate between "Online Freinds" for example, who although may be very nice outwardly online lol, they may have hidden agenda's too etc, then you can toggle between "Privacy (Invisible)" and "Available/Connect" Modes as and when you see given people online etc.....
Your IP may also be more readily available for those able to obtain it with certain "Hacking" skills etc if you also don't turn off the option that allows your "Online Presence" to be viewed by the ICQ Website too, and such people can then use Port Scanners when they obtain an actual IP to attack via such other means. I've never heard of a Virus or Trojan coming "directly" thru ICQs Ports either too, (unless an inexperienced user has been daft enough to accept a suspect file lol). Much older versions were known to be a little sketchy at times, but certainly since ICQ99 they have been fine.
It's far more likely that your IP has been obtained by any number of the available means (including you maybe giving it to someone for online gaming etc if you participate in that too), and then someone has scanned your Ports to find an open one suitable for slipping you a Backdoor and Voila, Trojan slipped on to you System....DOH!!!
And as for using Sys Resources, dunno where that comes from but mine doesn't basically use any as such (obviously it has to use some, but that amount is academic and ultimately very trivial), and it never has hammered resources either lol???????
As for whether your Optix Trojans also came thru ICQ originally too (which glad to hear you got all sorted by the Way Con Ling lol
), then that too is probably debatable to some, although extremely and highly unlikely. Trojans or Worms can use alsorts of Software to "Actually Communicate" with the Outside World once resident on a System and that Software could be anything that can use the Internet in some fashion. What that Application is is whatever the Author of the damn things coded in to be used essentially, but many of the more sophisticated (if you could use that term in the same line as talking about a Virus/Trojan that is rofl), Trojans or Worms are able to communicate by themselves anyway without the need for a seperate Application either to do their dastardly work. So although your examples may have used ICQ to communicate once on your system to do that work, the chances of it infecting your system via it are miniscule!! Wouldn't touch MSN Mess with a good old English Barge Pole though hehehehe
!!!! Had a few nasties using that in the past (eeeekkk)!! -
Hope someone who has been using them a while can help out please lol, I know how they work etc and now haveone installed at Home after finally getting Broadband installed last week but am wondering if there is any "Core or Significant" differences whether you hook up the Router to a PC with USB or Ethernet?????
Why do I ask.....I have a Zoom X4 that can be connected to the PC either by USB or Ethernet.......Is one more secure than the other if you have the option to use either is a main question??? Or are they just given as alternatives for those that don't have a LAN etc installed on their systems who would then have to use USB???
I've tried it hooked up with both, and presently it is hooked up via the Ethernet and into a Swtching Hub as I also have a temporary House Guest with me at the moment who also has a PC and wanted Web Access etc too, but when they are gone I was also considering putting the Router back on via USB again. Would that make a difference to security etc or any other Core differences etc too please guys
??Finally, if anyone can think of any general advise with using Routers then any extra info would be appreciated. It's up and running fine and as yet nothing has been blocked out that need to get to etc but I can't help but get the feeling that it could need more setting up lol (OH NO, that feeling that usually means re-installing summat muhahahaha
)!!! -
Phew, thought it was just me with a silly amount of 4 hehehe, and there's probably enough bits lying around here to make another 3 up as well rofl.....Will have to get on Ebay one of these days and start flogging some of it off hehehehe

Was gonna say lol, I had several Internal PCI 56k Modems when I was stuck with it and none were "Software Modems" at all. I also had a couple of Externals too (Inc 1 U.S. Robotics) and certainly the Internal ones I had also ran faster and cleaner than the Externals too.....
Obviously much of that will be down to individual Sys Specs of Hardware and Software thatcan all have effects etc but never discount a particular type assuming that they only operate in one way etc, you may do yaself big time
)!!!!! -
Sad, sad, sad......
Further testament to the fact that some dicks really have nothing better to do with their time than come up with this total BS, and whats worse is another total Dick was stupid enough to entertain them too.....
"Political Correctness" is fair enough when there is a "True Injustice" etc, but geeeeees, is there no ###### limit lol!!!!
-
Worx on my Home Ed too Snakebite.....I did wonder why it had been claimed that it didn't but wasn't going to start any arguments over the issue lol
!!!Unless it was actually intended to say that the extended "Admin Tools" weren't available under Services.msc, and not that the "run line" didn't work??????????
-
Have you also checked what type your 56k modem is too, example, is it a V90??
If you upgrade to a V92 and your ISP supports it, then you will get much nearer the actual 56k and obviously see some improvement if you aren't already on it
!!! The highest I ever saw when I used 56k all that time ago was 48,000bps, the average was 44,000bps depending ultimately on the ISP I used as that plays a part too in addition to the other issues that the guys have mentioned too!!!I haven't had 56k either for years, and as Cobblers mentions I was on ISDN for 3 years simply because DSL wasn't available in my area until recently and I couldn't take 56k anymore for the work I did online etc, it drove me bloody nuts lol. But, as he also says, it was quite expensive but ultimately worth it, but ONLY if DSL isn't available, then DSL becomes far more cost effective etc. You do get a true 128k though and it is also Digital so line noise etc doesn't affect the connection as much. I finally got DSL too recently though and looking thru ISP prices for 56k these days too, they are becoming more expensicve again as more people transfer to DSL etc and the ISP's that were raking in the money for people on 56k 3 years ago for example are losing costs in that area as they lose business too, soon a 56k connection could cost more than a DSL one too lol!!??!!??!!??
In all honesty though, if you can't afford that right now, then your cheapest option is to do that check on if you are running a V90 or V92 56k Modem and if you are at V90 then upgrade your Modem to that V92, (a 56k Modem is very cheap these days, and the V92 variants aren't any more expensive either) although the improvement will never be massive, it will be some
!! -
.....And it hogs your Net Connection Bandwidth when used to initiate Distributed DoS attacks too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Noticed your Internet Connection slowing down at all at anytime??
-
Hehehe,
Hey Pantera......I'm sure Mr Mamba will be glad for your info and it can only always be gratefully received, but the RAM issues fortunately were aready discussed in another of the threads he initiated concerning MoBo's themselves, as well as the possible limitations of them concerning everything from RAM to the PCI's
!!He's decided on an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe anyway and just has to choose a manufacturer that's compatible, other than that he's on the straight and narow for buying his new bits now lol
!!!! -
AHA......
Thankyou very much Phantom......
....You've just answered a whole big question for me.....I always did a manual Restore Point anyway as previously said when maing such alterations as a matter of course and common sense too ultimately lol. But, that now explains properly why even when a Reboot wasn't initiated when disabling the Sys Restore, that despite the files remaining that you couldn't then Restore to an earlier point.
Seems simple now when thought of like that LMAO, and that'll teach me again for not reading into it more, but all is answered now hehehe...
Cheers m8
)!!!! -
I've never quite worked out exactly the way that the Sys Restore "Should" fully "behave" in "Win XP" lol.
The System Restore Dir is Purged of all Data as it should be yes, but seemingly ONLY if you Reboot....
Furthermore, XP doesn't "seem" (that word again lol) to need a Reboot like Win's 95, 98 or ME etc etc had to, so you could kinda get round that and disable it, remove any problem files and enable it again before rebooting and all other files then stay.
But, I can't help thinking that it shouldn't be that way and I'm not Stating that is is with the above either, as said, it's merely how I seem to be understanding it after reading a little on it, and also from what I have experienced with it too after having to go through the process myself on a couple of occasions and how it operated for me lol. Would like to know if others have the same or otherwise whilst the subject is raised lol???
Unfortunately I've also had to remove a couple of Trojans since using XP (the downside to leaving unexperienced freinds unattended when they come round to borrow ya system to surf the net for some stuff they required LMAO, 1 infection of MSBlast, and another of Klez...Oh, and several on my Laptop that were done deliberately to of course hehe, just to see how the damn things tick, forewarned is forearmed and all that hehe)........
.....For me at least, when I disabled it no Reboot was required, and on checking the Sys Restore Dir after I had enabled it again and then Rebooted, then with the exception of the problem files themselves that were intentionally removed, ALL of the other original files were still there
.......Has anyone else seen this too????.....Whatsmore, this was with 2 copies of XP Home too.....The first was an OEM version I have, and the second my other Full Retail Version, so it didn't seem to be some sort of anomoly either?????Clearly though the best course of action, (of which I always do anyway when making any significant System changes), is to also do exactly as SOTOPhantom importantly points out to and be sure to do a Full Restore Point to be on the safe side when you have finished altering etc
!! -
The reason they keep returning is because they are in your System Restore m8.
Run Norton Liveupdate again too, if it hasn't been updated for a while then sometimes it can take 2 or 3 times to fully update (even if it does a Download, then run it again straight afterwards anyway until you get a message saying that no more updates are available (if of course you didn't already do that, I understand lol)), and then hopefully you'll have the latest definitions to find the remaining problem too!!
Otherwise....Unless you were guided through removing them from your Sys Restore Directory also, then they will return unfortunately if you ever have to use the Restore Function....DOH!!
Essentially, if you have managed to clear the relevant INI's and Registry enough to allow your Norton to work properly again. Then disable your System Restore and the run Norton AV again, it will be authorised then to get to any problem files still remaining in your Sys Restore Directory that are also still giving you trouble to either Quarantine or Delete them completely as Norton sees fit.
FYFI, If the Sys Restore is enabled, then Windows won't allow any application to alter or remove files from the Sys Restore Directory until it is disabled, (for obvious reasons lol, but it can present a problem when a bloody Trojan or Virus etc is backed up in there as you are finding out). It only needs disabling temporarily whilst you remove the crap, and then obviously you can re-enable it again.
That might sort out the 2nd problem file that keeps showing up for you, now that you can run your Norton again, and hopefully deal with it once and for all for you, hope that's of continuing use
!! -
Hiya CL,
Yup, the former isn't a nice one at all, it hogs Sys Resources and also has the capability to log Keystrokes to pick up your Passwords on your System as well as distributing other Confidential Info to those that control them via Backdoor
!!Your best bet will be to visit the following link for the removal of that one, scroll down the page when you get there for full removal instructions, and also refer again to the other 2 threads linked in the last post too.....IF you are still struggling to remove it after that, then sure, we can hook up via ICQ if we are online at the same time no probs (bear in mind that I'm UK tho (not a problem if you are too lol??), but if I can't help then there are also others here who may be able to advise you step by step too, but hopefully you'll get it with the info from the link here anyway......
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...ptixpro.14.html
......Are you sure the latter is spelt right too, there's nothing anywhere on that that I could find, but maybe someone else again could also help you out here and find summat too??? If it includes other .'s -'s or _'s too then obviously include them here and also use some Search Engines to see if you can find any onfo too, if you then direct us to any info you can find and it seems like Dutch to you then maybe can help you decipher it to lol
!!!Let us know how you go and if you need more help then shout and will hopefully get you sorted m8
!! -
It sounds like you may have MSBlast, Klez (as examples), or another of the Win32 Trojans.....
...They can infact affect Norton from Running at all, Live Updating and even Re-installing *GULP*!!!
Do not Sys Restore or you'll just back up any possible infection and make it worse. Log onto the Norton or Mcafee Sites and download the MSBlast Cleaner and follow the instructions for use, and if that fails, then get some of the other Standalone Cleaners and try them too until you hopefully find it!!
Check out these 2 recent posts with similar problems too for further reading on your potential problem, others have had recent issues the same as you too....
http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php...ST&f=24&t=12072
http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php...ST&f=24&t=11045
Also check your Taskmanager for running processes and see if there is anything running in there that you may not have noticed in the past, if required and ya completely stuck then kist every process in here and can point out a possible running Trojan to you if you have one too!!
Otherwise good luck with finding it as it does sound like you have one
!!Once you have caught it and if you haven't alkready done so, be sure to log onto the Windows Update Site too and Download the update that stops MSBlast from infecting your system too
!! -
No Probs and good luck, hope ya have ya new Sound System soon m8
!! -
PC3200 = DDR400
PC2700 = DDR333.......And so on down lower
!!And the 2 above would also be ya best options to go for too
!!And with ya proposed new system on the other thread, a Case with a minimum of 4 Fans would be advised but no essential, also if you can push to one with 6 Fans then obviously all the better too

Dunno if you've done this yet, but a couple of other things relevant to the matter that you may find useful......
1. In case it's not clear to you, before you download and install the patch that helps prevent you being infected by MS.Blast again you'll forst need to remove it, there is a Standalone MS.Blast cleaner at Sites like Norton and Mcafee etc......Run one of them and remove it, and then you can take the next step.....
2. If you install the patch that you are directed to above, be aware that for some reason the damn thing then runs as a seperate process for sme reason, and when I used it once it actually became a real pain in the ######. If you however don't bother with that one and use Windows Update Shortcut on your PC to navigate directly to the relevant page, and then browse through the list of Critical Updates for security etc, one of those contains the MS.Blast fix and once installed it won't run as another process on your Computer. Seemingly the 2 available fixes work in different ways, 1 running passively or that simply fixes the issue that allows MS.Blast in, amd the other that runs actively that picks up attacks as they occur and stop it then.
And as said a Pop up stopper also won't stop it as the problem lies with the RPC procedure of your OS and it's not one of those Windows Pop-ups that annoy us from time to time, that one if it occurs is critical to the System and isn't just for information!!!
Hope ya sorted soon tho
!!!!!!!!!!
