  1. i know it's blasphemous, but in my judgment, this is the halo-killer, at least for online play.

don't get me wrong, i LOVE halo2. it's one of the few games i've seen that actually lived up to its hype. the graphics are incredible, the story compelling and the gameplay smooth.

however, if you're into tactical/action/shooters, GR2 is the best i've seen. particularly for online play.

the previous iterations of GR have held their appeal, as is evident from the number of people still devoted to online play. GR2 improves upon the game in excellent fashion. the best analogy i can think of is that GR2 is like a synthesis of the best elements of the original GR and SOCOM2 wrapped into one game.

i am most impressed with the graphics. character movement is smooth and realistic, and the ability to do lateral rolls from the prone position answers a big frustration from the last iteration of GR. lighting effects and texture is detailed and clearly designed in a most thoughtful and thorough fashion. blades of grass sway in the breeze, flowers grow in the wild, insects buzz and swarm in the fields. the level designs are extremely expansive, much more so than in the previous game. also, the night vision is very realistic, much more so than in any other game i've played. instead of bright yellowish-green enemies appearing against a green background, the new night vision is much more challenging, allowing for gradations in color and texture, and without making it easy to spot enemies who are standing against like-colored backgrounds. it just looks much more like the real thing.

i also find that the urban environments are very good. diversity in topography abounds, and the surroundings appear realistic. few games achieve this without making the environment appear cheesy, with generic buildings, and an occasional obstacle.

i'm experimenting with the gun-camera, which is a fun gimmmick so far. it works well in campaign mode, but is more challenging against human opponents. it does add a different dimension to the game, nonetheless.

selection of weapons, equipment and character types seems more expansive than in the prior versions.

my observations are based on a limited amount of play thus far. i will provide a deeper and more structured analysis in the future. frankly, i was just so stoked at how good this game was, i had to tell someone. this is definitely the sleeper hit of the holiday season.
