Whether you like it or not there are going to be things that need fixing if you expect this game to have any legs at all.
-
I feel that the GR community almost owes an apology for the pressure we've put on UBI and GRIN to get this game out before it was finished.
Excuse me? Owe THEM an apology? Well if you feel the need to apologize to them for whatever reason thats your business.

Played some single player and some co-op using BattleLAN. System specs...
Pentium 3.0 HT
Asus P4S800-DE
2GB Ram
Ati All-In-Wonder X800XL Agp 256MB
On-board sound - 2 speakers + powered sub
For me the game looks and plays just fine. I hadn't even noticed the lack of anti-aliasing until I started seeing the posts here about it. They don't bother me or take away from the immersion. The graphics are a quantum leap beyond GR1 which is all I ask for. Gameplay is dead on, to me it feel like I'm playing a Ghost Recon game. That's the highest compliment I can give. Grin nailed the gameplay.
Feedback and issues:
The squad-leader death resulting in a failed mission in co-op is probably my single biggest complaint. I have posted elsewhere defending it as a design choice, and I stand by my arguements, but I also said it wasn't fun and it isn't. This needs to be addressed. Someone suggested it result in a change of mission objectives to the rest of the team playing to reach an evacuation point. Someone else suggested making it possible for another team member to pick up and equip the Cross-Com. Still another option would be a game mode that replaces objectives that only the squad leader could complete with ones that the entire team can do. Personally, I'd be satisfied if a Tango Hunt mode is added later.
The second issue is teammate AI. In general, it is excellent. However, I have had problems where I will move them using the Covering Fire command, tell them where to go and what firing arc to cover, and instead they will move near that point and face a completely different direction. Since there is no way to exercise fine control over their stance and facing, this needs to be tweaked. The AI should be able to go exactly where told and face exactly where told if it is possible, and only if it is impossible try to do the next best thing.
The angle when laying prone on a curb needs to be fixed. It feels as if the player model is laying as stiff as a board, which is what's causing the weird firing angles.
On the weapons loadout screen, it would be helpful if the currently selected weapon model and configuration would light up and display the model, rather than the currently equiped one.
On the tactical map, a reference grid is needed for multiplayer.
Also on the tactical map, the commander should be able to highlight visible enemies so the diamonds show on the teams' HUDs, at least in Co-op play.
Finally on the tactical map, a quick "zoom to soldier x" option needs to be added so it's easier to locate teammates in trouble.
Server settings:
Need an option to turn off the fly-in and briefing, and have a text briefing show up during the level load delay instead. It's neat and immersive in single-player. In co-op, it gets extremely repetitive.
Need an option to toggle the squad-leader death mission failure.
Need an option to set a number of respawns in co-op. I know most people will balk at the realism of that, but the option should be available for server admins who want it.
I agree with Rocky that it should have been a game type or an option to be chosen on a server before a game.
Having the entire team get called back because of the team leader's death is absolute nonsense. And its very unrealistic.
I have a feeling this was a leftover from the console version that ubi tried to push GRIN into using for the pc version. Thats my very strong suspicion.
And Bo is really from a special forces unit? Forget special forces, any kind of military unit worth its salt that is trying to carry out a mission will do whatever they have to do to get the mission accomplished.

I cannot play the game. Heres my PC specs:
GeForce FX5500 256MB AGP8
Kingston PC-3200 DDR400 1GB
AMD Athlon 64 bit 3200+
I cant play the game at all. No problem loading the starting page. But when click play, i cant see nothing, all in pitch black, i can hear voice and the small screen on my upper right screen. It also lag very bad even when i run at lowest setting and resolution set to 800x600.
I bet this is only due to vid card. Guys need some help, is it okay if i buy ATI Radeon X1600Pro 256MB DDR2 AGP8 for this game. Can this card take it?
---danish
Yes - you should get slightly better performance than my X800pro 256 AGP. And mine runs fairly well with forced AA on. I do get a long initial load time at the 'black screen' after the intro screens however (1 min or so) before the game main menu comes up. maybe this is demo specific?
The video card you have does not meet the minimum requirements. It has to do with the shaders of that card. If you buy the card you mentioned, you would have no issues at all with the card side of things. Good luck and hope you get it worked out.
YAY!!! i will buy the new vid card today and i will send back the feedback for this game!! thx a lot man. Appreciate it.
---danish
PEOPLE!!!
Don't buy a new video card because of this game. The graphics engine looks pretty but it is too old to be causing you guys all this trouble!! The graphics have been poorly optimized that is all.
Something that HAS to be addressed by GRIN whether they like it or not.

i think that next-gen titles are hitting home on the pc and those who dont have the pc's to cope with the needs of the games are just ###### and blaming grin for their short comings, grin promised as delivered, gameplay rox, eye candy is the best ive seen, the levels are long, the game is tactical, finally a ###### shooter that isnt rambo with retarded ai...
why does everyone feel the need to only talk about negativity... goddamnit anyhow
Why does everyone feel the need???????
Think about that for a moment wouldn't you......PLEASE??????????
Because there are problems. Apparently your easy to please if you think that stuff is eye candy. And apparently you have a special and unique view on what "AI" should be.

-
I honestly feel that this game would have benefited from another month or two of testing and developing.
I'm also sure that alot of the problems seen in the demo will have either already been addressed in the final release or have been earmarked for improving.
GR1 looked bad when i first bought it (i didn't really notice at the time until i upgraded), but it's gameplay is what sold it for me.
I've never bothered with AA in prefence of High Fames rates. And when you run around like a lunatic like my self the game blurs anyway, self induced AA.
I have a low to mid range card now (9700 pro) and as long as i can get some decent FPS 60-70 i'll be happy. The eye candy can wait till i need to upgrade (which will not be long anyway, my card is 3yrs old)
GRAW has future proofed itself IMO so as to still look good in a few years time, which is why alot of people are struggling to get it looking good now.
1Mb cards are starting to appear (eg Radeon FireGL 7900).
In 12 months time 512mb will be almost standard. And this game will shine.
I agree. When GRIN went on vacation or even when they were hanging out here on the forums because "their work was done" I don't think they were really hearing the people on this forum.
Some of Bo's staff like Desmond and a few others looked and listened some but it was really up to Bo.
I think they took our advice with a grain of salt and went and did their own thing. No matter what we say in the end they are going to do what they want. I dunno, we'll see what happens when the full game comes out.
-
Well all I hear is that this game is NOT next generation, but people should know that one of the main things that make it next generation is more demanding hardware!!! You can not have next generation and still make a game compatible with 5 year old hardware. I just don't understand what people think next generation means??? But the advanced physics, graphics, sound, animation, and interaction of GRAW is the very meaning of the word next generation to me!!!
This is what is confusing to me. The game is certainly not "next generation". The diesel engine they are using is obviously dated and shows its age. But yet it is highly customized including adding the HDR effects and whatnot. But besides the HDR I can't understand why its demanding so much from the hardware. Visually there are already titles out there that look way better and are using brand new engines but don't drag down modern rigs the way this demo is doing.
Although the new nvidia drivers seem to have helped with the low framerates a bit.
And, has anyone gotten the HDR effect to really work? Its not for me I haven't seen any lens flare or stuff you might see in the HL2 loast coast demo. All I see is the orange and brown colored textures everywhere. Whats high tech about that?

-
i think it turns off hdr completely...or bloom
it is post effect after all...which is what hdr would be categorized under
But I don't see the HDR effect in game at all. Its only the annoying orange everything color effect. Which I don't understand because my rig should be able to show the hdr.

Ok I may not be a pro in game design or anything, but one of the great things about PC gaming is engines can be made to scale down so just about any computer can run it (and very good I might add) from the past 2-4 or so years....
Correct me if im wrong but Grin has not really put much effort into this?
I mean even with a 7800gs, AMD3500+, 1gb DDR400 it can only run the game at an amazing 15-25 fps on all low settings at 1024x768 with default settings on the CPU, memory, and video card.
I had this bad gut feeling this is what was going to happen when the game came out.
So "SOME" would say just upgrade your computer.
I would say.... Why doesnt the engine scale itself better?
remember, I dont actually know what im talking about since I have no idea what its like to work on a video game.

Dont get me entirely wrong thoe I think the game is good overall (still not GR thoe) and im basing all of this off a demo.... but I cant help but feel you guys overlooked some very important parts of the games design in terms of the engine/graphics.
Pro,
if ya got an nvidia card make sure your running the latest drivers. I'm running 84.21 and that seemed to have cleared up alot of the slow framerates.

I'm seriusly getting ###### with my teamate AI. This could be a dealbreaker if not fixed in the full version. I swear the next time one of them pushes me out of cover or walks out into a hail of bullets then acts surprised that he got shot, I'm shooting them myslef.
*enemy sneaks into range*
graw soldier: "hoo go dareeee"? "stop or me gun shooot yuuuuus" "omgz mitchell wut weee doood nowww" *runs across kilzone while bullets flyin almost knocks down mitchell*
mitchel:

lol!
Actually, never seen sp. I don't even care about it frankly. And I even care less for it now from all the talk about the so so AI. All I care about really is the mp. Was playin co-op online with some buds last night using battlelan. LOL no internet demo haha jokes on GRIN. Thanks goodness for battlelan!
-
You can also make a custom color profile for the game. Most video cards can not only change brightness and contrast, but also increase or decrease saturation, and the red, green, blue color channels.
Well, if you could please let us all know how to do that we would appreciate it.

*SIGH*
I wanted to write a very long and detailed post about my views of the demo. From the graphics to the gameplay to the feel of the game. But my mind is just a jumble right now. But I think I will save my full detailed and longggggggggg review until the final game comes out. And I will buy it.....for ol times sake.
The short of it:
Nice game but its not GR.
Doesn't have "IT". If you need to know what "IT" is...you will never know.
Despite the bugs the graphics are "nice" but the engine chosen is just too old. Its gonna end up biting GRIN in the butt.
Gameplay seems fun and technically its non-linear but the commander's hand holding of the team makes it might as well be linear as a railroad track.
Bottomline: Fun....but it doesn't have the legs to last. Its a good game and a solid effort in and of itself but its not GR nor is it a true sequel. As long as you keep that in mind you will enjoy the purchase.
-
Because I played the lost coast with both HDR and AA with my nvidia card.
Ok, then it would seem that valve used a different method than what GRIN did?
And if so, why couldn't GRIN do the same?
-
Nevermind.
Someone just confirmed that while this works it also disables your nightvision and messes up your tactical map.
So I guess we all will have to play it as is.

-
Ok now this is confusing.
Didn't the HL2 HDR demo lost coast have both HDR and AA ???
Someone explain?

Came across this post over at the official gr.com forums. I thought this might interest some of you.

Yes, the sound is quite excellent mine good job!

But tell ya buddies that they are going to have a lot of work when they get back to the office.

Mature or not the reviews are in and their mixed. Not a bad game at all dude. But well....umm....there are alot of "buts" lets put it that way.

-
Yup, 7/10 for me too....but I was being generous. I will buy it and fun with it as long as I understand that its not gr.
But amen to DonMiguel's words. If you don't know what "IT" is then it won't help to try to explain it.
-
I don't know if many of you are afraid that GRAW will replace GR since its obviously better than GR. Like Xeno said, you want realism, but when you got it you can't handle it.
I'm not just talking about the dust in the face-thing, I'm talking about the importance of leaning and that the enemy actually can see you from a far distance.
If you want realism, play GRAW.
If you want less realism, play GR.

If you want less realism play GR? Dude, did you honestly think that thoroughly through before typing?
GRAW is ok.....nothing more. It is only better.....ONLY better in the respect that its using technology that is more recent.......period.
But it simply will not have the long lasting impact that GR did when it debuted. People will buy it and have fun with it (including me)....for a while. But it won't have the 5 years plus fanatical devotion that GR1 has and still has.
Hey, I could be wrong....but I doubt it.
And I've still haven't made my official assessment. Still gathering thoughts....still thinking....still reading others opinions.

-
I saw something about this too. I think it is made from the same people that did Close Combat: First to Fight. I wouldn't expect too much from it, but you never know...
The game features had me all excited til I saw the $20.00 price. Plus the fact that no one heard of the game til recently and the full retail game is going to be sold less than a month from now.
Major titles are usually like $50.00 bucks (unless the U.S. Army pays for it like America's Army) and people hear about it months in advance.
But, fully destructible environments supporting 125 players online with non-linear and creative missions and objectives seems incredible.......on the surface anyway.
-
Has anyone heard of this game yet? Its supposed to arrive in the US sometime in May.
Its supposed to be a hot title but yet its only selling for $20.00 so it can't be that great.....right?

-
I hit the forum with my assessment which I will put in a seperate thread.Â
If it is feedback about the demo, a separate thread is not necessary... just add it to the demo feedback thread.

Ok.
Its just that I wanted to especially have Rocky respond to the request. I'm afraid this post will just get buried in this thread and that he would never see it. Can ya mention it to rocky to glance through this thread and read this post? I want to hear his views on it before I gather all my thoughts and start writing my opinions.

graphically, the best part of gr1 was its ability to play well on a multitude of system configs. it appears the only way to get quality graphics is to deck out your rig with the highest end hardware (which for most means ###### off the wife, missing a mortgage payment, and signing over the first born). I really hope that'll change in the release version, or patched quickly.
I'm a bit disappointed you can't change control to your other teammates too. Sorry, but the team AI seems strangely familiar (almost as if a little piece of gr1 did make it into graw). I frankly dont trust my teammates, I spend more time telling them where to go then playing. I ended up getting tired of it and just had em walk into MG fire to be rid of them so I could put on my red headband and rambo em. The ability to control your teammates is critical when AI isn't working in a situation. though props to my sniper, the man can run and pinpoint snipers with his rifle all day long...I stopped using him as a sniper, and started using him as a rifleman, he just isn't stoppable! plz grin, consider enabling the OPTION for teammate switching. Some like it without, but others like it with. can't go wrong with enabling options for such a diverse crowd as us.
all my whining aside...coming at the demo as "its not GR, its another game" mindset, I really enjoy the game. It's the closest we've come yet to a tactical shooter since gr1. graphics will look great when they fix a few things (seems to me it'd be professional suicide not too, esp with it being the bulk of complaints). sounds are top notch (btw, does anyone else get someone from their team who won't shutup about reloading? I hate losing a guy, but when they start that, into the mg fire they go). load times are quick (except on a checkpoint load. after a couple of those it starts winding down, fresh start of graw fixes that though). all in all, if this was a new game with a new name, it'd get a 8 1/2 in my book with potential of 9-10 with some glitch fixes. But I can't bring myself to rate it higher then 7 while bearing the name ghost recon.
I agree with your assessment DonMiguel. Thats why I gave them a 7 as well. Frankly, I was being generous. Note that I am going to buy this game. And like you I will enjoy the game as long as I think of it as "its not GR, its another game".
But your right.....its not gr. And this title will not have the staying power of GR1. In a few months other titles will be coming out that will go way beyond this effort.......graw is a fine effort yes......but it doesn't have the legs.
And I'm still absorbing more opinions before I give my official assessment.

He didn't? So I guess it wasn't a big deal when Bo started crying and left the forum?
Maybe it was because credits or not doesn't he make final decisions on everything? Or is he just a businessman. Furthermore, if he really didnt have any hands on in the game then I guess its a moot point then that he was in the special forces?
That would explain why when the team leader dies in this game then the whole mission is a wash. Perhaps Ulf andersson made it that way? If Bo had hands on in the game he wouldn't have done that. He should know that in real life the mission gets completed no matter what.
