I edited the file and couldn't really tell a difference. Does that way really work or am I just not noticing the effects?

When I go into the graphics options and look under the Z-buffer depth, the only options I have are 16 and 24. 32 is shaded to where I can't select it. It has been that way since I've had the game, through several reinstallations and on at least 3 different computers. I know the computer I'm on now can handle it, so why can't I select it? Has anyone else had this problem or know of a solution? Thanks in advance for any help!
