  1. Will Jacobs and Scott Mitchell are entirely two different characters. You can see Mitchell's bio on the new GR2 site, and check out Will Jacob's bio here:

    http://ghostrecon.3dretreat.com/grspecialists.htm

It doesn't appear that any of the Ghosts in GR1 appear in GR2. Even the Ramirez in GR2 (i.e. Joe Ramirez) is different than Henry "don't call me Hank" Ramirez in GR1.

I personally think it would have been cool to have some continuity in the characters.

  2. Was flipping through a game mag and the GR2 ad caught my eye and sent me scrambling for through my pile of mags for a old issue with the same ad.

    Before

    and

    After

Red Storm make the "Screaming man" go to some anger management classes?

    :P

Nice comparison Zantar. Who says RSE doesn't listen to fans?

BTW, I don't think many people have seen the 2nd page of the new GR2 ad, with the artwork expanded to include 2 other Ghosts (I think Parker and Kim if I recall correctly from the bookstore) :snipe::gun: accompanying the screaming man (i.e. Mitchell) :support:

Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest videogame publishers, today announced that gamers will be able to start enjoying Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2 for the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft two weeks early! Originally slated to ship for retail on November 30, 2004, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2 for Xbox will now head for store shelves on November 16, 2004.

That's fantastic news! This means RSE's QA process must have been really great in order to send a bug-free build to Microsoft for certification. Ubisoft PR at the Houston demo event last weekend did mention the game could be released early if certification went smoothly. Congratulations to Red Storm for outstanding execution and completing the game ahead of schedule!

The only bad side is that I'll only have a week to play Halo 2 cuz GR2 will likely be in my Xbox until the PC version comes out :(;)

  4. As sure as Island Thunder came out for the Xbox, Jungle Storm came out for the PS2, and Black Arrow came out for Rainbow Six 3, there will be an expansion for GR2. The only question is "when?"

Also, since the expansion will likely come out on the console first, and has to priced at around the same point as a full console game, I am guessing that we can likely expect the GR2 expansion to be more substantial than the Desert Siege and Island Thunder mission packs we originally got on the PC.

RSE has all the tools developed over the last few years for GR2, so hopefully it won't take them as long to come up with new content for the expansion! (E.g. Anyone know how long it took for Ubi to release Black Arrow after R6:3 Xbox came out?)

    Hopefully we'll know by E3 2005 next May ;)

  5. How did they review the game when it is not even done yet?  The stuff from the houston hands on said the game was finishing up right now.

You're right. There's NO WAY that the build OXM UK "reviewed" was a final version, since Ubi PR at the Houston event said Microsoft is currently certifying the game.

In fact, the reviewer had to have wrote that piece weeks ago if this issue of the mag was just printed and hit the stands. So the version of GR2 they "reviewed" was likely even older than what people saw last weekend in Houston. <_<

Pretty sad OXM UK jumped the gun and basically reviewed an unfinished product for the sake of having a review on newsstands by the time the game is on store shelves. Not too professional if you ask me.

I'd suggest folks here wait til we actually get proper reviews that get published AFTER the game comes out by reviewers that actually play the WHOLE game through and try out all it's features (like multiplayer, Xbox Live etc.)

  6. Just remember that OXM's review is just one person's opinion (well maybe two since the editor has to agree). I have read actual quotes from the article at another GR fan site forum and it appears that the reviewer was really struggling with playing the game. He had a very frustrating time coordinating an assault with the AI, and felt shooting enemies was quite boring.

I have a feeling that tac sims are not his forte or favorite genre, which would naturally lead to a review like this

That's the problem with taking reviews too seriously. I'm sure if a member from these forums who are hardcore tacsim fans wrote a review, we would see a much higher score. If the reviewer OXM UK picked prefers racing games, or RPG's or run and gun shooters, GR2's score reflects his own tastes.

Does anyone here remember that IGN gave the PC version of GR1 top marks, and GameSpot slammed it? Check this ancient piece of history ... look familiar?

This isn't exactly related to Ghost Recon but has to do with our previous "issues" with Gamespot. They have just published their review of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and gave it a 9.2 score with every area getting a 9 except for graphics which got a 10. While I don't know how good RtCW is or isn't, from reading the review I am EXTREMELY upset at how unfair this proves their Ghost Recon review was. Their RtCW review talks about how weak and so-so the single player RtCW experience is and then basis their score on the multiplayer experience.

Regardless of the single-player game, the multiplayer game is worth the price of admission.

Well you know what, that just happens to be my opinion of Ghost Recon. TOO BAD THEY DIDN'T EVEN TALK ABOUT GR MULTIPLAYER IN THEIR REVIEW! Instead, they based their 7.2 score on their single player experiences. What the heck is up with that? *sigh* They gave GR's graphics a 7 score and RtCW a 10. What a joke.

  7. It sounds as though the download was interupted. Movies, as with mp3's, do not require every byte in order to play.

Hey Blistr, I believe you are correct. I downloaded the movie on my work system earlier today and saw the credits (cool font BTW  ) I just realized the version of "Learning to Fly" was live when I heard the end of the soundtrack. :clapping:

I'm now at home and checked the file I originally downloaded and it is only 44.2MB as opposed to the 56MB it's supposed to be.

Maybe I was running too many apps/windows while downloading and the download inadvertently got cut off early. :wall: (I think I was playing CoD:UO at the time :P )

  8. I agree that there needs to be more choices in the poll

I bought GR for the following reasons:

    - I really enjoyed the Rainbow series games made by RSE, and GR was the RSE's real successor to Rogue Spear

    - I bought GR and the expansion packs primarily to play through the single player campaign. Multiplayer and mods were just icing on the cake and extended the life of the game.

    - The GR demo immediately sold me on buying the full game.

  9. eeeewwww, all because I want to install DX9c so I can play FSW.

As indicated above, you can install DX9c without installing SP2.

This might sound silly but it may actually work: did you try using the WinXP Network Setup Wizard? I seem to recall you can create a Network Setup Disk (floppy) to help you setup a connection to other systems running non-WinXP versions of Windows.

  10. In case people here haven't noticed another good report in the Ubi.com forums, here's a link:

    http://forums.ubi.com/eve/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=40...43&m=7521089632

Here are some choice tidbits from LordBlackfire's post:

    - Some contentious gameplay issues like sensors and respawn killing have been addressed.

    - Calling in airstrikes in multiplayer has been taken out due to bug issues. It was in the game at the San Francisco showing back in September but it was causing too many games to crash. No time to fix it so it is gone.

(Maybe it will fixed for the sequel :rambo: )

    - The game is already being certified by Microsoft, so it looks like it's almost complete and on track for its release later this month!

  11. CR6, you are the like the 4th person who didn't wait for the end credits.  :wall:  I listed everything there.

Hmm ... the movie I downloaded didn't have end credits - I just checked the end of the movie and noticed the music stops rather abruptly too ...

(Played it on Media Player 10)

  12. IM not sure whether i am going to buy and Xbox , cos i want to get GR 2 and Halo 2 .  hmmmm

I'm a PC gamer primarily, but I'll be picking up Halo 2 to "warm up" for GR2 :P (to get used to using a Xbox controller instead of a keyboard/mouse)

Although I tried out and was impressed with the first couple levels of Halo 1 when it originally came out with the Xbox, I actually waited 2 years for the PC version to come out as I knew I could finish the game faster with a keyboard/mouse, and the resolution would look better. :rocky:

  13. I'd suggest the usual sweeping with an anti-virus program, spyware remover, and checking your msconfig (System Configuration Utility) startup items to make sure something hasn't hijacked your right-click. You can also look under "Processes" in the Windows Task Manager to see if any programs there look suspicious.

  14. Let's just hope for us gamers, that the LCD monitors of the future will look as good as the best CRT's of today.

Agreed! Right now, gaming still looks best on a flat screen CRT.

Here's a hilarious article over at the Inq about LCDs as a status symbol

    http://theinquirer.net/?article=19317

LCD manufacturers take us all for morons

Image quality, many manufacturers will argue, is as good as the leading CRT TVs. That's true, but only if that image doesn't move. Ever tried watching a game of football on one of these £2,000 slinkies? There is so much trailing image – or 'ghosting' - that you spend a lot of time checking your can of beer to ensure that you have not been drinking Elephant.

No, you're not drunk, just becoming aware that all is not well with the skinny TV. The same is true with action movies or anything requiring a fast response time. Hold on, I think they're OK for bowls and snooker though, as long as Jimmy White isn't playing. LCD TVs need to hit a response time of around 10 milliseconds (ms) and lower to achieve the quality of CRT TVs. Right now, most are in the 20-30ms range with a small number coming down towards the 15ms stage. Don't worry about the odd colour reproduction either as LCD TV manufacturers assure us techies - not the public though - that they are sorting that out.

Don't forget that sitting to the side might make the image harder to see, or a little darker, because viewing angles on many LCDs TVs are a bit tight. I have enough 'viewing angle' problems of my own at the weekend without my very expensive TV adding to the problem.

Now, I have to fall over within a 150 degree viewing angle. Oh yeah, try closing the curtains too if possible to prevent screen glare. So, what have we got? You're looking good as long as you sit in the dark, not too much to the side, are colour blind and plan on watching Tai Chi videos. Not bad for £1,500. What a bargain. Just remember, next time you are watching your expensive new toy that the blurry image comes as standard. Don't blame the beer! µ

  15. Several people have noticed that IGN is hosting a new Red Storm produced video that gives us a guided tour of seven of the new multiplayer maps in GR2 Xbox.

    Low-res version (10MB)

    http://media.xbox.ign.com/media/675/675406...4_01_wmvlow.wmv

    Hi-res version (30MB)

    Edit: Mirrored at http://files.3dretreat.com/file.asp?fileid=609

Here is a list of the multiplayer maps that are previewed in the video:

    Ghost Village

    Training Ground

    War Zone

    Ancient Ruins

    Lost Convoy

    Sand Mine

Bunkers (Looks like a cool tribute to the classic Rogue Spear map)
