  1. you know, so far the game doesnt exactly have a huge customer satisfaction rating.  not like i would have thought anyway.

That's not true. As of this moment, GameSpot has logged 596 ratings and 9 reviews. The average fan score is currently 9.2/10. That looks like a huge customer satisfaction rating to me. Granted those customers taste in games may be different than some of the folks here in this thread ;)

osokdfgr linked to a fan review with one of the lowest ratings. Did you read some of the other reviews that ranged from 8.8-10/10 to get a more balanced opinion?

While jumping to conclusions about a game without ever trying it may not be too fair, it's even more questionable to jump to conclusions about the PC version that hasn't even come out yet

  2. As a PC gamer who has laddered for a long time in GR/DS/IT MP, and who's just tonight completed the Xbox campaign, I'm very much willing to wait.  GR2Xbox is not a sequel, it's a related title.  It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's not Ghost Recon 2, other than in name.

Dannik, have you had a chance to try GR2 Xbox MP over Xbox Live? If so, just wondering how you would compare it to your GR/DS/IT MP experience.

  4. The case has a product key sticker on it, and the HD is working - it just ain't booting.

If your friend's computer has a valid product key sticker on the case, I'd recommend that you just use a regular Windows XP CD (full version) to boot from and reinstall Windows, and then type in the product key on the case, not the key that came with the CD. The owner should have no probs re-authenticating the Windows XP installation within 30 days if it is a valid key.

Only caveat is that if the product key is for XP Home, then use an XP Home disc. If it's an XP Pro key, use an XP Pro disc.

  5. Are you using a PS/2 or USB connection? Make sure the connection is secure. Also, if it's a USB connection, try another USB port.

If the red light on the bottom of the mouse ever flickers out, that means you are not getting power through the USB port.

Otherwise try another mouse and see if you have the same probs.

  6. Hey Biffa, great story! Fortunately, my wife isn't too hostile to me buying games these days, but I only have time to play them after she and the kids go to bed, and usually I'm too wiped out after a long day to play very long -_-

Anyways, reminds me of how I and another fan got the original GR1 PC for almost 50% off because of an error in a store advertisement flyer:

All Canadians! GR for Cdn$34.99 at Future Shop

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought GR earlier at Future Shop for Cdn$64.99. However, the ad booklet that Future Shop puts out weekly shows GR selling now for $34.99 (which is $23.50 for you folks in the USA). Whether this is a typo or not, I brought the ad and my receipt back to the store today and they will honor the printed ad's price, so I got $30 back! So if you live in Canada near a Future Shop and still haven't got GR yet, there is absolutely no excuse not to buy it before the sale ends Dec 11/01.

I noticed this ad at work. Called my wife and asked her to go to the local FS to take advantage of this. I knew the ad was wrong since my friend had purchased GR the night before. To make a long story short, after 35 minutes of arguing with 3 different managers and having some FS customers cheering my wife on, FS finally agreed to sell GR for the advertised sale price.

  7. I know I'll eventually try HL2, but it's quite far down my list of games I have time to play at this point.
What else is on that list? I'm starting to run out of games to play myself, so maybe you have some tips :)

Well, I'm heading off from work right now to pick up GR2 Xbox, so that will be the game occupying most of my gaming time for awhile - especially if it's true that the normal difficulty is like the elite difficulty in GR1!

On the PC front, here are the games I'm currently playing. Note that because of real-life commitments (work, family) gaming time is pretty limited, so I usually take a long time to get through games:

    In progress:

    1. Call of Duty: United Offensive - I'm on the tank missions of the Russian SP campaign. I'm VERY impressed with the polish and production values of both this expansion pack as well as the original game

    2. Need for Speed Underground 1 - This game just oozes eye candy ... great if you just have a short period of time to play. I'm on the (approx) 96th race (out of 110) and getting frustrated with those circuit races you have to go around like 6 laps - might try a few more times and move on to NFSU2

Games I've bought but still haven't played:

    1. Raven Shield - I've installed this until my recent reformat ... finished the first few missions, but just couldn't get into it. Kinda bad for the webmaster of R6 Retreat

    2. Athena Sword - Not installed yet ...

    3. Splinter Cell 2: Pandora Tomorrow - finished the training level until I reformated. Looks pretty cool

    4. Metal Gear Solid 2 PC - Konami finally released the ATI patch and it looks great on the Radeon

Games I'd like to buy before HL2

    1. NFSU2

    2. Full Spectrum Warrior PC

    3. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - tried the demo, pretty fun

I bought the original HL1 (mainly to play C-S) and tried the SP campaign, but really couldn't get into the story after the first few missions. Some games just "click" with you, and some don't. Try as I might, I just couldn't get into Joint Ops MP, although I liked Novologic's Black Hawk Down demo - which is another one I might pick up in the bargain bin come to think of it ...

  8. I must be the odd man out, because I still don't see the justification at this point for not releasing some details about the PC game, even if it is in development.

Hey Kurtz, I can understand your thirst for info about the PC version, believe me I want to know too!

UbiRazz has said RSE is actually "reworking" the game, so I think it's more a matter that RSE does not want to release info too early until they've confirmed exactly what changes will make it into the PC version or not.

I would guess that the majority of what we'll see in the PC version is already in the Xbox. Personally I am not setting my expectations too high that the PC version will be radically different than the Xbox, given the fact they are owned by Ubisoft and likely need to move on with other projects (you can bet your boots there will be something along the lines of a Black Arrow style expansion pack)

That way, if RSE does come up with some big changes for the PC version, it'll blow me away even more

  9. Just a bit of an aside here: talking about Halo 2 and GR2, here's a bit of trivia! Did you know that there is a Red Storm connection with Halo 2?

I got the Halo 2 Limited Edition DVD, and I saw the name Steve Cotton in the credits. Steve Cotton was one of the artists from the beginning of the R6 franchise (R6, EW, Rogue Spear) and became the Producer for Rogue Spear: Urban Ops. He made such classic maps as Space Shuttle for Eagle Watch and the jungle map in Covert Ops.

Then he left to do Amped for Microsoft Game Studios. Looks like he's now moved over to Microsoft's other dev studio Bungie!

  10. Not sure if this is the right forum to post about this, but here it is ... two new job positions have been posted at the employment section of RSE's site:

    http://www.redstorm.com/employment/

Just curious which members of this forum are seriously interested in getting into the game industry? Here's your chance!

    Scripter

Put the "play" into gameplay by scripting missions, balancing features and working with the team to tune the gameplay experience. Work with the project's Lead Designer to fulfill the positioning and primary feature requirements of the game, and contribute to the team's goal of reaching the project's primary vision. Ensure the subjective quality of the gameplay of the game through scripting, playtesting and balancing. Implement and document gameplay, and employ consensus to improve the game. Provide competitive intelligence to the Design department.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Designer

Work in a variety of design roles, from Lead to scripting, to ensure the success of the assigned project. Work with or lead the Design team to fulfill the positioning and primary feature requirements of the game, and contribute to the team's goal of reaching the project's primary vision. Fulfill game-related design and writing tasks. Implement and document gameplay, and employ consensus to improve the game. Provide competitive intelligence to the Design department. If needed, ensure the subjective quality of the gameplay of the game through scripting, playtesting and balancing.

  11. With the release of GR2 for the Xbox this week, some fans of the PC version of GR have perhaps unrealistically expected we would get news about the upcoming PC version right away. The good news is that info is indeed coming, but we still have to be patient. Ubisoft's UK Community Manager "UbiRazz" has posted the following statement here at the official Ubi GR2 forums:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=40...2242#5051002242 (Thanks to Dannik for helping me find the source of the quote  )

The PC version is coming out later as it's getting reworked to make it as good as possible on PC and it's not just a straight, and poor, console port. They're intending to make it an amazing game specifically for the PC platform and are remaking the multiplayer and singleplayer game for it. Check back after Xmas for info on the PC version  :)
  12. I heard stuff about some guy who was like, the head of the community or something, but he up and left in disgust over some delay that would not be officially announced, but he knew about - or something! So I will go read that when I have 5.

Yeah, I remember you bringing that up way back when, and the article talks about it here:

    http://www.gamespot.com/features/6112889/p-15.html

Perhaps the cynics were right--maybe the E3 demo really was a sham or a facade. Some fans remembered Team Fortress 2, a game that was announced at E3 in 1999, won countless awards, and then disappeared shortly afterward. Was Valve up to its old tricks again--was Half-Life 2 going to disappear like Team Fortress 2? The webmaster of one Half-Life fan site posted a bitter missive on Valve: "The bottom line is this: I'm not a fan of Valve anymore. I don't believe a damn thing they say and I'm sick of their bulls***." Valve, the company that had created one of the greatest PC games of all time, now seemed to have pulled off one of the greatest cases of deception ever seen in the game industry.

The fans felt burned. They wanted answers. The problem was that Valve wasn't giving any. Until now.

  13. Hey Day, once again, very well-written review.

I know I'll eventually try HL2, but it's quite far down my list of games I have time to play at this point.

If you really like the game, make sure you read the 25-page report about its development we have been discussing here:

    http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=22268

I admire Valve for 2 other things:

    1) Its huge support for modders - it's releasing the SDK right on the heels of the game's release

    2) Its novel ideas for anti-piracy measures:

    a) the Steam activation made sure no one could play the game earlier than others and thus leak both the game and plot twists etc.

    b) have you heard that Valve released its own "warez" version of HL2 to shut down offenders - I'm just waiting for some warez guy to sue Valve for invading their privacy

    Half-Life 2 Pirated Warez Version Info. - Half-Life 2 News

      Posted by: azzkiker on 11-17-2004 @ 05:13

This News Item has been viewed 149792 times!

    Hey HL2 Gamers!

Recently, one of the HL2Files.com members here, alerted me of a pirated warez version of Half-Life 2, apparently released via the Bittorent network. I immediately, forwarded this to Gabe Newell of VALVe Software. [The great man, we should all be thanking for Half-Life 2  ].

A couple of hours later, Gabe replied with the following:

    Quote:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We're running a bit of an experiment. We're keeping track of the accounts that do this and will be shutting them off.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, as you can see, VALVe Software have released a test "warez" version aimed at catching people out. These people will have their accounts deleted and will be banned from Steam.

Therefore, I strongly suggest that you DO NOT participate in these illegal activities as it would only lead to your own harm.

VALVe Software spent over $40 Million to develop Half-Life 2. Show them you appreciate their work. Buy the game!

As the saying goes: BURN YOU WAREZ MONKEYS!

  14. At the last E3, Red Storm showed some Eagle products that appear in GR2. Check out the first photo on page 2 of GR Retreat's E3 preview here:

    http://ghostrecon.3dretreat.com/gr2_e3_preview_2.asp

Anubis was told that the Red Storm team did work with real-life Special Forces gear companies like Blackhawk and Eagle Industries to ensure the highest level of realism.

So now we know where Alicia Diaz's cap and tac vest comes from. Anyone here can identify who makes her cool shades? :rocky:

  15. Is there even an instance of a 1.4 dedicated server thats stable?

You would think, dedicated mode would be super stable, especially since it doesn't even use a lot of resources.

Yes, there is a whole list of dedicated servers on the front news page of GR.net (look at the right column halfway down the page). Contact their respective server admins to get some tips on how they keep their GR servers up and running.

GR was not built from the ground up with dedicated server support unlike other game engines (Quake, Unreal, etc.). Dedicated server support was added on to the GR engine at a relatively late stage which explains some of its quirks.

  16. But added "expect to see Halo3 the same day the Ps3 hits USA store shelves"
Urgh - if Halo 3 is a PlayStation 3 only title, I'll die. Unless Sony drastically alters the gamepad. FPS on PlayStation is a lost cause for me. Ack :(

Thanks for your comments again! Halo 2 was the first Xbox game I've ever played from start to finish. (I have GR1/GRIT Xbox, but never finished them since I've played it all on the better looking PC :) )

I'm pretty cumbersome with the gamepad too - took a little getting used to the first part of the game. I actually waited for Halo 1 to come out on PC to save time as I figured it would be faster to play through the whole thing with keyboard/mouse :P

In any case, Halo 2 for me was a warm-up for the main event ... GR2

BTW, I think what sup's quote meant was that Microsoft will time Halo 3's launch to coincide and counter (draw away hype from) the release of PS3 hardware. Halo will never be released for Sony's PlayStation as long as Micrsoft owns Bungie ;)

  17. I posted this in the Computer Discussions forum.

Here's the simple reply: my best advice is if you are upgrading your PC JUST for GR2, then do not do so until Red Storm/Ubi finalizes the minimum/recommended system specs for the game sometime next year. Why?

    - Even if you wait 3 months, you will get better technology for the same price as now

    - You will not be disappointed when you find out GR2 exceeds your new system specs, or that it runs at a slower framerate than you would have liked.

Right now, NO one outside of RSE can predict what the minimum system requirements you will need for GR2.

When GR1 came out for the PC, it taxed even high-end systems (everyone remember having to turn off shadows?) But a year later, faster CPUs and most new graphics cards could handle the shadows no prob.

If you want to upgrade your PC to play other games besides GR2, then there's lots of hardware sites out there that will recommend the best system configuration for your next game (e.g. Doom 2, HL2)

  18. normal mapping wich is just a Diffuse map

    bump maps would be awsome.

Your statement is incorrect. Make sure you back up your statements with some fact - all it takes is a quick search on Google

    E.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_mapping

    Normal mapping

In 3D computer graphics, normal mapping is an application of the technique known as bump mapping. While bump mapping perturbs the existing normal (the way the surface is facing) of a model, normal mapping replaces the normal entirely. Like bump mapping, it is used to add details to shading without using more polygons. But where a bump map is usually calculated based on a single-channel (interpreted as grayscale) image, the source for the normals in normal mapping is usually a multichannel image (that is, channels for "red", "green" and "blue" as opposed to just a single color) derived from a set of more detailed versions of the objects. Whereas a bump map changes normal vectors' magnitudes, a normal map changes normal vectors' magnitudes and directions.

You can think of normal mapping as a more advanced form of bump mapping - so since GR2 has normal mapping, it does NOT need to just use bump mapping (which is older technology)

BTW, here's the PS2 version of the video

    http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/675/675405/vids_1.html

  19. Hey Day, always glad to read your posts, and happy to see your review of Halo 2. I just finished it yesterday night too, so it's cool to compare notes.

Just finished it. (On 'Easy', mind you :P)

Initial thoughts: It's short! Jebus, I spent days on Halo, playing hours after hours every day. I did Halo 2 in two sittings, and neither of them were particularly long stretches.

I finished the game on Normal difficulty (as I did with Halo 1 for PC), and it DOES make a big difference on the gameplay experience. It took me about 4 nights, few hours each (which fits with the 10-14 hours of SP that most gaming websites report).

I'd suggest you check out IGN's comparison between the 4 difficulty levels here:

    http://xbox.ign.com/articles/565/565726p1.html

    Easy

Your foes cower and fall before your unstoppable onslaught, yet final victory will leave you wanting more.

This really is easy. Not just kind of easy or perhaps not so challenging, this is about as easy as gaming gets. The AI for the Covenant is almost non-existent. Grunts and Elite often stand still to make for easy targets and Chief's shield can take an incredible amount of damage. Snipers are relatively sparse and generally obvious. Even ones you miss will usually hit your body instead of the head, giving you time to react.

    Normal

Hordes of aliens vie to destroy you, but nerves of steel and a quick trigger finger give you a solid chance to prevail. The default difficulty, Normal is a little easier than it was in the first Halo. While this is a good mode to start off in for any Halo expert or even for someone new to the Halo universe, it likely won't be too difficult. Though there are some challenging moments and you will probably die at times, anyone with a little dedication can complete Halo 2 with a sense of accomplishment.

Obviously, it's possible that simply cranking the difficulty up a notch or two will extend the gametime, but IMO, a game is still "short" if the only thing making it last longer is more and more difficult enemies.

According to IGN, playing on Legendary does alter the gameplay significantly as your friendly AI is much smarter - it apparently becomes more of a tactical game

The Battle Rifle is the shiznitz, visually, but I kept wishing it'd pack more of a punch and have more ammo lying around. New pistol sucks. Am I the only one thinking the pistol in Halo 2 looks like it belongs in some average two-year-old shooter or something? Dang it, what was wrong with the pretty one from Halo?

I agree the new pistol is really weak - I tried it once early in the campaign and never used it again. The pistol was really a super-gun in Halo 1 - I often used it as a sniper weapon for headshots. The Halo 1 assault rifle was wimpy and really only good for shooting all those creepy Flood floor suckers. I read a dev interview that said the reason they changed the weps balance was that people expected the rifle to be more powerful than the pistol, so I think Halo 2's weapons are more "logical".

The new Battle Rifle in Halo 2 is the equivalent of the Halo 1 pistol and the Halo 2 SMG is the equivalent of the Halo 1 assault rifle. Make sense?

Story was - contrary to what GameSpot would have you believe - far from disappointing. Seems to me that Bungie focused more on the story in Halo 2, with plenty of cutscenes and more insight into what makes the Covenant tick. Some also complain about the sudden cliff-hanger ending (and the subsequent loose threads), but I didn't feel it was much different from Halo's ending in that aspect. If anything, it's a positive thing. The chances of seeing Halo 3 seem pretty high now :D

No doubt there will be a Halo 3 - likely on Xbox 2. If you finish Halo 2 on Legendary, there is a cryptic sign saying "coming Feb 9th"

I kinda compare the ending of Halo 2 to the Empire Strikes Back ;)

All in all, a great game by my standards. I think I might have enjoyed Halo more, seeing as how it was a lot bigger and had somewhat more varied combat (Halo 2 had a lot of "let's cram you in a room with lots of big bad guys time and time again".), but from a technical point of view, Halo 2 wins hands-down.

I personally enjoyed Halo 2 more, since I felt the 2nd half of Halo 1 was pretty much the mirror image of the first half :P I liked all the new environments that didn't repeat themselves. I was mainly disappointed we couldn't play the level shown in the E3 demo :( . And Halo 2's MP rocks from all I've heard. (Haven't tried it yet)

GameStop has a box pic and revised release date for GR2 PC - June 2005

    http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=645824

Note that larger retailers like GameStop and EBgames do get approximate release dates from publishers, otherwise I wouldn't bother to bring this up. It's also interesting how they got the PC box art cover too.

Please do NOT panic that GR2 PC is delayed - I'd take any retailer's release date with a large pinch of salt until confirmed by Ubisoft.

As usual, I'm all for GR2 PC being delayed for "as long as needed" for RSE to do their usual outstanding job.

With all the big titles that hog the media spotlight (HL2, Doom 3, etc.) coming out in 2004, I think that since GR2 is now coming out in 2005, it has a real good chance for winning "Game of the Year" again!
